Chapter 3

Georgina’s driver arrived at the penthouse at two o’clock. He didn’t offer an explanation. He just held the door of the black sedan and said, “Mrs. Perkins wants you at the estate.”

I knew what was coming.

When I stepped into the grand sitting room on the Upper East Side, the air felt suffocating. It smelled of white lilies and lemon polish.

Georgina sat behind her antique mahogany writing desk. Her posture was stiff, her silver hair styled into an immaculate chignon. But she wasn't alone.

Arlette Fernandez stood near the fireplace. She wore a tailored beige knit dress that clung tightly to a round, visible belly. She had one manicured hand resting gently on top of the bump. Her cream Birkin bag sat on the corner of Georgina’s desk.

On the polished wood, right beside a silver letter opener, lay two glossy strips of ultrasound photos.

Arlette gave me a slow, pitying smile. She looked entirely composed. She had rehearsed this entrance a hundred times in the mirror.

“Sit down, Harlee,” Georgina said. She didn't look up from the photos.

I didn't sit. I walked to the edge of the desk and looked down at the black-and-white images.

“Vincenzo’s heir,” Arlette spoke up. Her voice was sweet, coated in honeyed malice. “Ten weeks along. The clinic confirmed a strong heartbeat this morning.”

I knew about Vincenzo's secret vasectomy. I knew Arlette’s pregnancy was impossible. Underneath that expensive cashmere dress was a silicone prosthetic, shaped to perfection. But I kept my face blank.

Georgina pushed the ultrasound photos aside with the tip of one manicured finger. Then she slid a heavy paper folder across the desk.

“The marriage has served its purpose, Harlee,” Georgina said calmly. Her tone was the same one she used when sending back undercooked fish at a restaurant. “Four years is more than enough time. The Perkins family requires an heir. A legitimate future.”

She paused, lifting her cold gray eyes to meet mine.

“We need a woman of strong constitution,” Georgina added. The blow was quiet, but sharp as glass. “Someone whose body doesn't fail under pressure. We need a real mother, not a broken vessel.”

The insult sliced deep into old scars—back to the hospital room four years ago, to the blood and the empty bassinet.

Behind Georgina’s shoulder, Arlette bit her lower lip to hide a smirk.

I didn't scream. I didn't flip the desk. Instead, I let my breath hitch. I lowered my head and pressed my fingers against the wood, letting them tremble visibly.

“You’re throwing me away?” I whispered. I forced my voice to crack on the last syllable.

“Don't be dramatic,” Georgina replied, waving a hand. “We carried you after your father’s disgrace. We gave you shelter when your family went bankrupt. You owe us grace in this matter.”

I blinked hard, forcing moisture into the corners of my eyes. A single tear spilled over my lashes and traced down my cheek. I looked small. I looked utterly defeated.

“Does Vincenzo know?” I choked out.

“Vincenzo will do what is best for this family,” Georgina said firmly. “Sign the papers. You will vacate the penthouse before he returns from Dubai on Sunday.”

I stared at the thick white documents. *Marital Dissolution Agreement.*

My heart thumped, steady and ferocious. Freedom was six inches from my fingertips. But I couldn't make it look easy. If I signed too quickly, Georgina would become suspicious. She had to believe she was squeezing the life out of me.

“I won't sign,” I said, my voice shaking with practiced defiance. “I won't leave with nothing.”

Georgina’s eyes narrowed into cold slits. “You have no leverage here, Harlee.”

“Two things,” I stammered, wiping my cheek with the back of my hand. “Give me two things, and I will sign right now. I will walk out the door and never contact Vincenzo again.”

Georgina leaned back, skeptical. “Name them.”

“My mother’s sapphire necklace,” I said.

Georgina had taken it from our family vault after my father died, claiming it as collateral for Spencer debts. It was the only piece of Madelyn Spencer that remained in this house.

“And?” Georgina asked.

“Two hundred thousand dollars,” I said quietly. “In cash. To rent an apartment and start over.”

Two hundred thousand dollars. To the Perkins family, it was pocket change. It was the cost of one weekend trip to Aspen. After moving sixty million dollars into offshore trusts over the last three days, asking for two hundred thousand was an insult to myself—and a masterstroke of camouflage.

Georgina almost laughed. The contempt in her face was absolute.

Arlette leaned down, her lips brushing Georgina’s ear. “Take it,” Arlette whispered urgently. “It’s a bargain to get rid of her for good. Think of the baby.”

Georgina nodded slowly. She reached into her center drawer, pulled out a velvet navy box, and dropped it onto the desk with a heavy clatter.

“Take the trinket,” Georgina said dismissively. “The bank draft will clear by tomorrow noon.”

She uncapped her black fountain pen. With two swift strokes, Georgina signed her name as the Perkins family guarantor. Then she passed the pen to Arlette, who signed as the legal witness with a flourish of dark ink.

They both looked up at me, smug and radiant with triumph.

I picked up the pen. My hand stopped shaking.

I pressed the gold nib to the paper. I signed *Harlee Spencer*. Not Perkins.

The ink gleamed wet under the chandelier light.

I picked up the velvet box and tucked it safely into my coat pocket. Inside my chest, something clicked into place, like a heavy iron deadbolt sliding back.

“Have a wonderful life, Arlette,” I said softly.

I turned and walked out of the sitting room, leaving them with their victory, their lies, and a house made of dry kindling.
