Chapter 4

The Crescent Throne medical wing smelled of wintergreen, eucalyptus, and clean cotton.

I sat on the edge of the examination table, my legs dangling, while Healer Maren ran two fingers over the left side of my neck. Her touch was cool, but her silence was heavy.

She leaned in, adjusting the bright task light above us. Her amber eyes narrowed behind thin gold-rimmed glasses. For nearly two minutes, she didn't say a word. She just traced the faint, pale lines where the black crust of the brand had flaked away at the airport.

When she finally pulled her hands back, her jaw was tight enough to crack bone.

"How long did you carry this?" she asked. Her voice wasn't gentle. It was low, hard, and vibrating with suppressed fury.

"Ten years," I said.

"Ten years," Maren repeated. She ripped off her latex gloves and tossed them into the metal bin with a sharp flick of her wrist. "This wasn't an accidental exposure or a sloppy ritual, Tiana. Whoever applied this iron used a high-grade, distilled wolfsbane oil. It was chemically balanced to bind directly to your nerve endings without causing lethal sepsis. It was designed to do one thing: smother your inner beast until she starved in the dark."

Hearing it laid out in plain English didn't break me. If anything, it felt like cold water after a fever. For a decade, Ryder had told me the burning in my blood was just my body accepting the bond. He had told me I was naturally weak.

"Can it be flushed completely?" I asked.

"Your body is already doing it," Maren replied, turning to check a digital panel on the wall. She tapped the screen, studying the glowing outline of my vitals. Then she stopped. Her breath caught.

She turned slowly to face me, looking at me with an entirely different kind of scrutiny.

"Your wolf," Maren said quietly. "Her aura density is off the charts. And her physical frame... even dormant, she shouldn't have been able to carry that much muscle beneath a poison block. Normal wolves break under a brand like that within three years. They turn feral or die."

"I survived," I said.

"Because you aren't a regular pack wolf," Maren said, leaning against the counter, crossing her arms. "The size, the coat luminescence, the psychic push that shattered an Alpha's voice... that only comes from an unbroken Alpha bloodline. A pure one. Ryder didn't just mute your mate bond, Tiana. He was sitting on a dormant Alpha lineage and using poison to keep you from realizing you could crush him."

She scribbled a rapid note into my physical chart, stamped it with a red privacy seal, and tucked it beneath her arm.

"Get dressed," she said, her tone softening just a fraction. "You have trials in twenty minutes. I'll take this report to Prince Ashton myself. We need to check the King's archives."

The outdoor combat ring was packed.

A circular clearing carved out of the pine woods served as the Crescent Throne challenge ground. Packed dirt, marked by salt lines, surrounded by roughly fifty pack warriors. Dominic Hale stood near the tree line, his arms crossed over his chest, his eyes fixed on me like hawks. He still thought I was an unearned charity case.

My first opponent stepped into the ring. His name was Bradley, a seasoned Delta with thick forearms and a broken nose. He looked me up and down, a smirk curling on his lips.

"Don't worry, sweetheart," he drawled, rolling his shoulders. "I won't hit you too hard. Wouldn't want Ashton docking my pay."

"Shift," I said simply.

Bradley scoffed, but his bones popped a second later. He exploded into a massive, heavy-set russet wolf. He snarled, scraping his front claws in the dirt, expecting me to back up toward the boundary line.

I didn't back up.

I closed my eyes, let out a slow breath, and opened the door I had kept shut for a decade.

White-hot power tore through my spine. In a single breath, the change hit. My bones lengthened, fur rippling like liquid silver under the mountain sun. When all four of my paws struck the dirt, the ground literally shook.

I rose above him. My silver-white wolf dwarfed the Delta by at least two feet.

Bradley took a hasty step back, his ears pinning flat against his skull. The smirk was completely gone.

He lunged first, aiming for my throat to use his bulk to pin me. But I had spent twelve years analyzing every fight in Shadowridge. In the first ten seconds, I saw the hitch in his left shoulder. In twenty seconds, I knew his recovery time was half a second too slow.

I didn't meet him with brute force.

When he leaped, I ducked low, letting his heavy body sail over my back. I hooked my shoulder into his ribs, redirected his momentum, and slammed him hard into the frozen earth. Before he could scramble to his feet, my jaws were clamped lightly around the scruff of his neck, pressing his throat into the dirt.

Four minutes. That was all it took.

Bradley whined, going completely still. His tail tucked, signaling full surrender.

I released him, stepped back, and shifted back into my human form, pulling on my training shirt without a trace of breathlessness.

The ring was dead silent. Nobody cheered. Nobody laughed. The watching warriors just stared at me with wide, unsettled eyes.

Over by the pines, Dominic didn't say a word. But his arms slowly uncrossed, and his gaze lingered on me with cold, sharp respect.

By dusk, every muscle in my body ached, but the heavy fog in my blood was gone.

I walked down the quiet hallway of the pack house toward my assigned room. When I reached the door, I paused.

Sitting on a low table beside my threshold was a covered silver tray.

I frowned, lifting the polished cloche.

Underneath was a thick fillet of cedar-smoked salmon, perfectly grilled with crisp skin, accompanied by roasted root vegetables and a steaming mug of dark amber tea. A faint scent rose from the cup—silver-leaf and licorice root. The exact herbal blend used to flush wolfsbane from deep tissue.

There was no note.

I hadn't told the kitchen staff what I liked to eat. I hadn't told anyone my favorite fish, or that I preferred roasted parsnips over potatoes.

I leaned down and picked up the tray. As I carried it inside and set it on the floor, the aroma filled the small room. Cedar. Woodsmoke. Rain.

Deep under my ribs, my wolf lifted her head. She let out a soft, satisfied hum, purring against my bones like a cat curled near a fireplace.

I sat cross-legged on the rug, surrounded by my open strategy notebooks, and took a bite of the salmon. It was warm, rich, and familiar.

I didn't let myself wonder whose hands had cooked it. And I forced myself to ignore the steady, quiet hum that wouldn't leave my chest.
