Chapter 1

The ceremony was supposed to start at eight. I walked into the Shadowridge pack house at seven-forty, the ceremonial gown whispering against my calves, the wolfsbane scar hidden under a coil of my dark hair. Twelve years. Twelve years I had waited for this night.

I never made it to the altar.

The scent hit me three steps past the inner doors. Ayla's perfume — that cloying jasmine she wore like a signature — knotted with something warmer, muskier, familiar in a way that stopped my breath. Ryder's scent. On her. Under her jaw, along her collarbone, blooming through the fabric of her dress the way a scent only blooms when a wolf has been pressing his mouth to skin for a long, slow while.

My hand moved before my mind did. I parted the ceremonial drapes behind the altar.

Ryder had Ayla pinned against the pillar. His lips were tracing the side of her throat in a deliberate, unhurried rhythm — the scenting a wolf performs only for his mate. Her fingers were tangled in the collar of his ceremonial jacket. Neither of them heard me.

The brand on my neck pulsed once. A single beat, sharp as a struck bell. Then the cold started.

It moved down from the mark like water finding the lowest point in a room. Cold through my collarbones, cold behind my sternum, cold pouring into my fingertips until my hands felt like they belonged to someone else. I stood there and watched my life fold itself neatly into a small dark box.

Ryder turned his head. He saw me. He did not step back from Ayla.

"Tiana." He said my name the way you say the name of a piece of furniture you're about to move. "You're early."

I did not answer.

He straightened his jacket. He walked past me — brushed my shoulder as he went — and pushed through the drapes toward the ceremonial hall, toward the four hundred wolves of Shadowridge already seated in their rows.

I followed. I don't know why. My feet carried me because my head had gone quiet.

The hall was full. Every face turned when Ryder stepped up to the dais. Every face turned again when I appeared behind him in the gown I had helped design, the gown Ayla had never touched a stitch of.

Ryder raised his hand. The murmuring died.

"I, Ryder Miller, Alpha of the Shadowridge Pack —" his voice carried, clean and steady, the voice he used for treaty signings and funerals "— reject you, Tiana Sullivan, as my mate."

The brand died.

I felt it go. Not a break. Not a snap. Something colder than that — a small, dark shutting, like a door closing on an empty room. The mark on my neck, the mark I had touched every morning for ten years, went dead against my skin. A scar. Just a scar now. Cold as a coin left out in the snow.

Somewhere in the pews a woman gasped. Someone else made a small sound like a laugh cut short. I did not look at any of them.

Ryder's voice deepened. The Alpha tone landed on me like a hand pressing down on the top of my head.

"Take off the gown, Tiana. Give it to Ayla."

My knees tried to fold. My spine held.

Something moved inside my chest — a hot, snarling thing that had been asleep for a decade. It surged up under my ribs, teeth bared, and for one white second I felt her — my wolf, my *wolf*, awake enough to want to tear the ceiling down. Then the wolfsbane clamped down like a hand around her throat, and she went quiet again. Watching. Waiting.

I smiled.

I don't know what my face looked like from the pews. From inside it felt like the last decision I would ever need to make: this man is not worth one tear. Not one.

I reached back and unhooked the gown at the neck. Slid the sleeves down my arms. Stepped out of the skirt with the careful, unhurried grace of a woman changing after a long day. Beneath it I wore only the plain slip I had put on that morning, thinking no one but Ryder would ever see it.

I walked to Ayla. I laid the gown across her arms the way you lay a dead thing across an altar. Her lashes fluttered. Her lips parted like she meant to say something clever.

I did not give her the chance.

I walked past her, past Ryder, past four hundred staring wolves, and I sat in the family pew for exactly one breath. In. Out. Then I stood, walked down the center aisle in my slip and my bare shoulders and my dead scar, pushed open the pack house doors, and stepped into the cold.

The night air hit my skin like clean water.

I took out my phone under the porch light. My fingers were still cold. I typed three words.

*We are done.*

Sent.

I did not wait to see if he read it. I walked around the side of the pack house toward the strategist's office, because there was one more thing in that building that still belonged to me — twelve years of notebooks — and then I was never setting foot in Shadowridge again.
