My Mate Used My Body to Keep Her Alive Novel Cover

My Mate Used My Body to Keep Her Alive

She trusted the bond and believed his promises, so when Damon begged her to take Vanessa's Moon Poison once more, she agreed—on one condition: their unborn child stayed safe. He signed that guarantee, then signed away her protection. Waking childless and alone, she found him comforting Vanessa while their cruel accusations tore her apart. Cutting the bond felt like freedom, but the truth cut deeper: Vanessa had refused treatment all along, using her as proof of Damon's choice. Never again.

Chapter 2

The word no seemed to offend the room.

Damon stared at me as if four years of marriage had taught him every version of my voice except this one.

"You volunteered for the first two transfers," he said.

"Exactly. Volunteered."

"Vanessa is deteriorating faster now."

"That doesn't turn my past consent into permanent access."

His jaw flexed.

"I will not force you."

The sentence should have comforted me.

Then he added, "But I hope you can live with the consequences if she dies."

I stared at him until the sentence seemed to reach him from outside his own mouth.

"You hear that as concern for Vanessa," I said. "I hear it as a threat that if I protect myself, you will hand me her death to carry."

Damon rubbed a hand over his face. "That isn't what I want."

"Intent does not make the weight disappear."

He looked toward the red communication stone. The light pulsed again. Every flash pulled his attention away from me.

"I will ask Iris for alternatives," he said. "But if there truly are none—"

"Then we are facing a tragedy, not a debt."

He took his coat and left for the healing wing.

By sunset, I went to the clinic to review Vanessa's chart with Iris.

I heard Noah before I reached her office.

He stood outside Vanessa's isolation room with both palms against the observation glass.

Damon was behind him.

Inside, Vanessa convulsed.

Her back arched. Her fingers clawed at the sheets until red streaked the white cotton.

Noah screamed.

The seizure stopped as abruptly as it began.

Damon pushed into the room and pulled Noah with him.

I stayed in the doorway.

Vanessa turned her pale face toward Damon.

"Stop asking her," she whispered. "The baby matters more."

Then she reached for the green camping lantern beside her bed.

"Maybe Aunt Vanessa can't take you to Moon Lake after all, sweetheart."

Noah broke into sobs.

He clutched the lantern to his chest.

The more selfless Vanessa sounded, the more clearly she made my refusal responsible for his grief.

Damon wrapped an arm around him.

He did not correct it.

He looked at me over Noah's head.

"Iris's suppressants are buying hours, not solving the poisoning."

Iris appeared beside me and caught my elbow.

"My office."

She shut and locked the door behind us.

"I contacted the external Moon Clinic," she said. "Vanessa was treated there before returning to Silverpine. Her complete records never transferred."

"Could there be another treatment?"

"Possibly. I won't promise what I haven't seen. But Damon saying a mate transfer is the only option is not a medical conclusion. It's his conclusion."

"Then we wait for the records."

Iris opened a second window on her monitor. "I've also requested a regional toxicology consult. Moon Poison can sometimes be managed with staged filtration, enchanted dialysis, or distillation if the patient's wolf is stable enough. None of those are guaranteed, but they are treatments. A mate transfer is faster, which is why pack leaders like it. Faster is not the same as safer."

"For whom?" I asked.

Her expression went flat. "Exactly. The recipient gets the poison out. The donor gets the risk."

That sentence stayed with me. Everyone kept calling the transfer a solution as if the danger vanished when it left Vanessa. It did not vanish. It moved into me.

The door opened.

Damon had used his Alpha access code to override the lock.

Iris's face went cold.

"Do that again and I will revoke your access to this office."

"Her toxin veins reached her neck," Damon said. "If we wait overnight, we may lose the window."

"You just interrupted a confidential medical conversation with your mate," Iris replied. "That is exactly why I locked the door."

Damon ignored her and looked at me.

"One stabilizing transfer. Then we use whatever the external clinic sends."

"No."

"Aria—"

"Iris said there may be alternatives."

"May be. I am not gambling Vanessa's life on may be."

"You are asking me to gamble our child's life instead."

He flinched.

"I am asking you to buy time."

"With my body."

Damon paced once across the narrow office.

"I will send border scouts for the herbs Iris requested. I will open an emergency external search. But if Vanessa crashes before those options arrive—"

"Do not finish that sentence."

He stopped.

I stepped closer.

"Her death would be caused by Moon Poison. Not by my refusal to become her treatment."

His eyes hardened, but he did not argue.

That night, Noah refused to change into pajamas.

He sat on the edge of my bed with the camping lantern in his lap.

"She promised we'd see the meteor shower."

"I know."

"Do you hate her?"

"Noah, this is not about whether I like her."

"When I had shift fever, you stayed with me for three days. You slept on the floor. You didn't say it was too dangerous."

"Caring for a sick child and taking poison into my body are not the same thing."

"But you did the transfers before."

I sat beside him.

"Because I chose them. The first one made sense. The second one hurt me badly. Now I'm pregnant and the doctor says another could hurt the baby."

He stared at the lantern.

"Vanessa said you always get scared right before you do the right thing."

My skin went cold.

"When did she say that?"

"At training. She said not to worry if you said no at first because family always changes their mind when they remember who needs them."

I took the lantern gently from his hands and set it on the floor.

"Listen to me. Loving someone does not give you the right to demand they get hurt to prove it."

His eyes filled.

"But what if they die?"

"Then the adults and doctors find every safe option they can."

"What if you're the only option?"

"I still get to decide what happens to my body."

Noah's lower lip trembled.

"If Aunt Vanessa dies tonight, is it because you could have saved her and didn't?"

I held his gaze.

"No."

He started crying anyway.

And in the hall beyond my bedroom, a floorboard creaked.

Damon had been listening.

I stepped into the doorway. He stood at the end of the hall with one hand on the banister.

"How much did you hear?"

"Enough."

"Then hear this too. You do not get to let Vanessa teach Noah that my boundaries are temporary."

Damon's face tightened. "I didn't know she said that."

"You knew he was afraid, and you kept talking about my choice as if it controlled whether she lived. Children copy the logic adults give them."

He looked toward the closed bedroom door.

"I'll talk to him."

"Not about convincing me. About respecting me."

For once, he did not correct my wording.

I closed the door between us and sent Iris a written note documenting Noah's comments. If this became a fight over consent, I wanted every piece of pressure recorded before anyone could call it a misunderstanding.
