Chapter 3

I waited for someone to say something.

Not an apology. Not even acknowledgment. Just — something. A private word in the hallway. A nod across the dining hall. The smallest signal that what happened on the training grounds was not acceptable, that a Luna slapped in front of a hundred warriors deserved at least the courtesy of a witness who would admit they had seen it.

Nothing came.

The first sign was breakfast the next morning. I walked into the pack dining hall at seven sharp, same as always. The Gamma's table — where I usually sat with Rosa and the ranked she-wolves — had one empty chair. Mine. Rosa was already seated, her head bent low over her plate. She did not look up when I entered. She did not look up when I walked past.

I took a seat at the far end of the hall. Alone.

The warriors ate in silence. A few glanced my way. Most did not.

I spread jam on toast I would not finish and cataloged every face that refused to meet my eyes.

---

By midday, the pattern was clear.

Messages that used to route through my office — coordination requests from the southern patrol, supply chain updates from the border stations, intel briefings from Marcus's network — began arriving at Ryan's desk instead. I knew because I checked the logs. My access had not been revoked. I had simply been bypassed.

The warriors I had trained personally — deltas who could recite my flanking formations in their sleep — stepped aside when I walked the corridors. Polite. Careful. Eyes down.

No one was rude.

No one was anything.

I was a ghost in my own pack house.

I went to my office and pulled out a fresh notebook. I wrote down every name. Every redirected message. Every averted gaze. I did not do it out of hurt. I did it because a strategist documents enemy movements, and silence is a movement.

My mark throbbed cold under my collar.

I ignored it and kept writing.

---

What I did not see — what I would not learn until much later — was Dennis.

Beta Dennis Gardner, Ryan's second-in-command, moving through the pack house corridors like a man defusing bombs no one else could see. Intercepting messages from Silvercrest operatives before they reached the ranked wolves. Redirecting inquiries from neighboring packs about the "Luna's status" with carefully neutral answers that gave nothing away. Positioning himself between the pack's political machinery and me without ever being seen to do it.

I passed him twice that day in the hallway.

Both times, his jaw tightened on the left side. Both times, he said nothing.

I thought it was disapproval.

I was wrong.

---

Evening came too slowly.

I stood at the window of my office on the second floor, looking down at the back lot where Ryan parked his SUV. The sun was setting. Long shadows stretched across the gravel. I was not waiting for anything. I was simply — there.

Then I saw her.

Khloe stepped out of the pack house side entrance, her dark hair catching the last of the light. She moved with the unhurried confidence of a wolf who had already won. She crossed the lot. Opened the passenger door of Ryan's vehicle. Climbed inside.

I should have looked away.

I did not.

The vehicle pulled out of the lot and disappeared down the access road. And through the mate bond — corrupted, weakening, but not yet severed — I felt it.

A pulse. Hot. Directed. Arousal that was not mine, not for me, not anything I had felt from Ryan in months.

It hit me like a fist to the sternum.

I doubled over against the windowsill. My hands gripped the wood. My wolf howled inside my chest — a sound so raw and broken I thought for half a second it had escaped my throat.

It had not.

I straightened slowly. Wiped my face with the back of my hand. Walked to my desk.

The territory maps were already spread across the surface. I picked up a red marker and began annotating.

Northern expansion route. Rogue patrol frequency. Lycan law enforcement jurisdictions.

I did not cry.

I worked.

---

The next morning, I drove north to survey Ironridge's boundary markers.

It was routine work. The kind of task a Luna does when she needs to be alone and cannot afford to look like she is falling apart. I parked at the trailhead and walked the perimeter on foot, checking the scent posts, noting erosion patterns, updating my maps.

That was when I found him.

A pup. Golden fur. Thin enough that I could see his ribs through his coat. He was curled against the boundary stone, shivering in the morning cold, entirely without pack scent or protection.

Abandoned.

I knelt beside him. He did not run. He looked up at me with amber eyes too big for his face and made a sound — not a whine, not a growl, just a soft, questioning noise that said he did not understand why he was alone.

I did not deliberate.

I drove home. I returned with a pack blanket and a bowl of water. I wrapped him carefully and lifted him into my arms. He was so light it hurt.

"Buster," I said quietly. "Your name is Buster."

He pressed his face into my jacket and went still.

---

That night, at three in the morning, I sat at my desk with territory maps blurring in front of me. My mark ached. My wolf was silent. The pack house was dark.

Buster lay across my feet, his golden fur warm against my ankles.

I set down my pen. I slid out of my chair. I knelt on the floor beside him and pressed my face into his fur.

One long, controlled exhale. That was all I allowed myself.

Buster did not move. Did not shift. Did not ask me to explain.

It was the first unconditional thing I had received in two years.

I stayed there until my breathing steadied. Then I stood. I returned to my desk. I picked up my pen.

And I kept working.
