Chapter 4

Mara came to my room that night.

I was sitting on the bed with Heaven in my arms, watching her sleep. Her breathing had steadied hours ago, but I couldn't stop counting the rhythm. In, out. In, out. Every breath felt like something I had to witness to make real.

Mara didn't knock. She just opened the door, stepped inside, and closed it behind her with a soft click.

She held a small glass vial.

The liquid inside was dark red, almost black in the dim light. A wax seal covered the top, pressed with Mara's healer mark—a crescent moon crossed by three lines.

"I kept a second sample," she said quietly. "He doesn't know."

She set the vial on the table beside my bed. Right next to the journal.

I stared at it. The glass caught the lamplight, and for a moment the blood inside looked almost silver.

"Dated," Mara continued. "Scent-witnessed. My mark is on the seal. If anyone opens it, they'll know it came from me."

I looked up at her.

Her face was calm. Not defiant, not frightened. Just steady. The face of someone who had made a choice and was standing in it.

"Why?" My voice came out hoarse.

Mara's eyes flicked to Heaven. Then back to me.

"Because she's a pup," Mara said simply. "And someone tried to kill her."

She didn't wait for a response. She turned and left, the door clicking shut behind her.

I sat there for a long time, looking at the vial.

Then I stood, walked to the dresser, and pulled out the locked journal case. I wrapped the vial in a clean cloth—carefully, so the glass wouldn't break—and placed it inside the case beside the journal.

I locked it. Hid it beneath the floorboard.

I didn't thank Mara with words. I didn't need to.

The understanding between us was complete.

That night, I wrote the message.

I sat at the small desk in the guest quarters with a blank piece of paper in front of me. Heaven slept in her crib behind me. The pack house was quiet—too quiet, the kind of silence that feels like held breath.

I couldn't write it in plain language. Richard had eyes everywhere. Omegas who reported to him. Betas who owed him loyalty. Even the mail that left Ironvale passed through his office first.

But my mother had taught me something years ago, back when I was still living with her in the small house on the edge of the old territory. She'd shown me how to encode messages using scent-markers—a system that predated written pack correspondence, used by wolves who needed to communicate across hostile borders without being intercepted.

I pulled out the small vial of lavender oil I kept for Heaven's baths. Added three drops to the corner of the paper. Then rosemary—two drops, opposite corner. A single drop of cedar oil along the left edge.

The combination was specific. Lavender-rosemary-cedar in that pattern meant Shadowveil Pack. It was the scent-signature of their border territory, recognizable to anyone who had spent time in their alliance network.

I wrote four lines.

*Elena Voss. Ironvale Pack. Daughter of Eve.*

*Is what she told me true?*

I folded the paper carefully. Sealed it with plain wax—no mark, nothing that could be traced back to me.

Then I waited.

The next morning, I found Lila.

She was an Omega healer, young, maybe twenty-two. She'd come to Ironvale two years ago with nothing—no pack, no family, just a wolf that had been weakened by wolfsbane exposure and a body that couldn't shift without pain.

Richard had wanted to turn her away. Omegas with damaged wolves were liabilities, he'd said. They couldn't fight. Couldn't contribute.

I'd treated her anyway.

I'd spent three weeks in the infirmary with her, using every herb and tincture I knew, working around Mara's schedule so Richard wouldn't notice. By the end of the month, Lila's wolf had stabilized. She could shift again. Not perfectly, but enough.

She owed me.

I found her in the laundry room, folding linens.

"Lila," I said quietly.

She looked up. Her eyes went wide when she saw me.

"Luna," she whispered. "I heard about your mother. I'm so sorry."

I stepped closer. Kept my voice low.

"I need you to deliver something for me. Outside the pack. No one can know."

Lila's hands stilled on the fabric. She looked at the door, then back at me.

"If the Alpha finds out—"

"He won't," I said. "Not if you're careful."

I handed her the sealed letter.

"Shadowveil Pack. Beta Sylas. Give it to him directly. No intermediaries."

Lila stared at the letter. Her fingers trembled as she took it.

"When?" she asked.

"Before dawn. Use the eastern border trail. It's the least monitored."

She nodded slowly. Then she tucked the letter into her apron pocket and went back to folding.

I left without another word.

Three days passed.

I stayed at the hospital with my mother during the days. At night, I returned to the pack house, fed Heaven, and sat in the guest quarters with the journal open on my lap.

I didn't hear anything from Lila. Didn't see her in the corridors or the common areas. I told myself that was good. It meant she hadn't been caught.

On the third night, there was a soft knock on my door.

I opened it.

Lila stood in the hallway, her face pale. She held out a small cloth bundle.

"From Beta Sylas," she whispered. "He said to give it to you directly."

I took the bundle. It was light, almost weightless.

"Did anyone see you?" I asked.

Lila shook her head. "I was careful. I promise."

I nodded. "Thank you."

She left quickly, her footsteps barely audible on the stone floor.

I closed the door. Locked it.

Then I sat on the bed and unwrapped the bundle.

Inside was a single pressed flower.

The petals were pale purple, dried but still intact. The stem was thin, delicate. I lifted it to my nose.

The scent hit me like a wave.

Old wood. Rain-soaked earth. Something sharp and green beneath it, like pine sap mixed with wildflower.

I knew this scent.

I'd smelled it before, weeks ago, when I'd searched through my mother's coat looking for something—anything—that still carried her presence after the assault. I'd found a small pressed flower tucked into the lining, hidden so carefully I'd almost missed it.

This was the same species. The same scent.

Shadowveil border territory.

My wolf stirred.

Not the half-formed thing that had flickered in the training field. Not the desperate surge that had tried to break free when Heaven seized.

This was different.

My wolf rose slowly, deliberately, like something that had been crouched in shadow for years and was finally standing at full height. I felt her in my chest—solid, present, *real*—for the first time in my life.

She didn't growl. Didn't snarl.

She just stood there, inside me, and breathed.

*I know this scent.*

The thought wasn't mine. It came from her, clear and certain, like a voice I'd been waiting my whole life to hear.

I pressed the flower to my nose again. Closed my eyes.

The scent wrapped around me, familiar and strange all at once. It smelled like safety. Like something I'd lost before I knew I had it.

Beta Sylas had been waiting.

Not for my message. For me.

For the question I would finally ask.

I opened my eyes. Set the flower carefully on the table beside the vial and the journal.

My hands were steady.

My wolf was still standing, quiet and sure, waiting for what came next.
