Chapter 3

Denver's phone lit up on the kitchen counter as I poured Emberlynn's juice. "Emergency alliance coordination with Silverfang," he said, already moving toward the door. His Alpha tone was clipped and efficient. "I'll be back late."

I watched him leave. I said nothing.

Emberlynn tugged at my sleeve. "Mom, can we go to the Halloween festival in town? Everyone at school is going."

I looked down at her hopeful face. Nine years old. Wolfless. Waiting for a father who wouldn't come home smelling like cedarwood and rain anymore.

"Get your costume," I said.

She squealed and ran upstairs. I pulled out my phone and opened the folder I'd been building for weeks. Denver's timestamped photos from last year's Halloween festival. The carnival booth. The Ferris wheel. Sutton's red dress and his hand on her waist.

Same festival. Same night. Different year.

I drove us into the human town as the sun set. The festival sprawled across the main square, lights strung between booths, the air thick with caramel apples and popcorn. Humans laughed and jostled. Pack members from multiple territories moved through the crowd, their wolves hidden beneath human faces.

Emberlynn held my hand tight. Her fairy wings bounced against her back as she walked.

I scanned the crowd. My wolf stirred suddenly, her senses sharper than mine. *Smell,* she whispered. *His scent. Here. Wrong.*

Cedarwood. Mountain rain. And underneath it, floral perfume so thick it made my stomach turn.

I spotted the Harrisons, a family from our pack, near the face-painting booth. "Mrs. Harrison," I said, my Luna voice smooth and warm. "Would you mind watching Emberlynn for a few minutes? I need to find someone."

Mrs. Harrison smiled and took Emberlynn's hand. "Of course, Luna."

I walked forward. My wolf snarled. The corrupted scent grew stronger with every step.

I found them near a carnival booth strung with orange lights. Denver's hand rested on the small of Sutton's back. His mouth pressed against her hair. His cedarwood scent was drenched in her perfume, the two smells tangled together in a way that sent searing pain through my mate bond mark.

The mark flared hot against my neck. Acid poured onto a raw wound. My wolf howled inside my chest, confused and grieving. *Mate? Why does it hurt? Why does he smell like her?*

I pressed two fingers to the mark. The pain sharpened. My vision held steady.

I walked forward.

Denver didn't see me until I was three feet away. His head turned. His eyes widened. His Alpha composure flickered.

I slapped him.

Open palm. Full force. The crack of it silenced the nearest hundred people in an instant.

Denver staggered. His hand flew to his cheek. The redness spread fast across his skin. Around us, the crowd froze. Humans stared. Pack members went still, their wolves recognizing the Luna's fury even if their human minds didn't understand the context.

Sutton's mouth opened. No sound came out.

I looked at Denver. My voice was cold and measured, the Luna tone I'd perfected over ten years of managing pack politics and swallowing my own needs.

"I want this bond severed."

The words hung in the air. Denver's Alpha tone fractured as he reached for my arm. "Florence, wait. Let's go home. We can discuss this privately."

I removed his hand with the precise detachment of someone handling something unclean. My fingers didn't shake. My wolf whimpered, but I silenced her.

"Don't say her name," I said quietly. Only Denver heard it. That made it worse.

His face went pale. "Emberlynn needs—"

"Don't," I said again. The single word carried the weight of every lie, every missed bedtime story, every night he came home smelling like another she-wolf.

Sutton backed away, her carefully constructed confidence evaporating. She turned and fled into the crowd. Her red dress disappeared between the booths.

I turned and walked back toward the face-painting station. My legs were steady. My breathing was even. My mate bond mark burned like fire against my neck, my wolf howling in confusion and grief, but my human mind was cold and clear.

Mrs. Harrison looked up as I approached. Her eyes were wide. She'd seen.

"Thank you," I said, taking Emberlynn's hand. My Luna voice was perfectly composed. "We're heading home now."

Emberlynn looked between us, sensing something wrong but not understanding what. Her small hand squeezed mine.

We walked to the car. I buckled her into the back seat. I climbed into the driver's seat and started the engine.

The drive home was silent. Emberlynn didn't ask questions. She was nine years old and already learning to read the emotional temperature of a room.

I watched the road. My hands were steady on the wheel. My wolf whimpered softly, mourning the mate bond that had once felt like the Moon Goddess's greatest gift and now felt like a chain.

In the rearview mirror, I saw Emberlynn's reflection. She was looking out the window, her fairy wings slightly crooked, her face thoughtful.

"Mom?" she said quietly.

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"Are you okay?"

I met her eyes in the mirror. I saw myself at nine years old, learning what strength looked like. Learning what a she-wolf does when love becomes a cage.

"I will be," I said.

It was the first true thing I'd said all night.

When we pulled into the pack house driveway, the lights were off. Denver wasn't home yet. Good.

I carried Emberlynn inside and tucked her into bed, still in her costume. She was asleep before I finished smoothing her hair.

I walked downstairs to my office and opened my laptop. The password-protected file labeled 'Pack Banquet Presentation' stared back at me. I added a new entry: Halloween festival. Public confrontation. Witnesses from multiple packs.

Then I opened a new document and began drafting the formal rejection ceremony script.

My hands didn't shake. My wolf grieved. But Florence—Florence was three moves ahead and closing in.
