My Mate Sacrificed Me to Save His Mistress Novel Cover

My Mate Sacrificed Me to Save His Mistress

Hidden behind Kolton's desk, she was searching for trade contracts. What her fingers closed around instead was a recorder—and her mate's voice, coldly detailing wolfsbane at the climbing frame joints and silver woven into the grip wraps. Nothing lethal. Just pain. Her cracked ribs turn to ice as Brooke's soft reply confirms the betrayal. In a world of pack loyalty and obsession, she was never his priority—only a pawn sacrificed to protect his mistress. The recording burns in her palm, and one question remains: how far will she go before the next accident is her last?

Chapter 3

I opened the bond.

Not carefully. Not the way I'd learned to do it over the years, letting just enough through to feel his mood or send a question. I tore it wide. I shoved everything I had down that link — the cold biting through my dress, the silver rope burning rings into my wrists, the sound of the river below me like something with teeth. My heartbeat, rabbiting in my chest. The wind. The dark. The certainty that the rope was fraying where it rubbed against the railing and that when it gave I would not be able to swim.

I felt him receive it.

It was like a hand closing around mine in the dark. His attention snapped to me through the bond so fast it nearly stopped my breath. For one heartbeat I felt his alarm, sharp and immediate, his wolf surging forward inside him. *He knows. He's coming.*

Then Brooke collapsed.

I didn't see it. I felt it. Through the bond, through the mate-link that was supposed to be mine alone, I felt her distress flood into him like water through a cracked dam. Gasping. Chest-clutching. Her wolf-sickness symptoms flaring right on cue. The theatrics were perfect. They always were.

Kolton's attention pivoted.

I felt the exact moment he turned away from me. Felt his alarm redirect, his wolf's protective instinct locking onto her instead. And then, with a precision that felt like a scalpel, he severed the mind-link.

Mid-sentence. While I was still screaming his name down the bond.

The connection went silent.

Not muted. Not distant. Gone. Like a door slamming in my face.

I hung there in the wind with the rope cutting deeper and the river loud below me, and I understood with a clarity the cold made absolute: he had chosen. Again. He would always choose her. And I had been screaming into a void.

My wolf, faint as a thread under my ribs, let out one small sound. Not a howl. A sigh.

The rope gave.

I didn't have time to take a breath. The fall was shorter than I expected and longer than anything I'd ever felt. The black water hit me like a fist. Cold that went through skin and muscle straight into bone. I tried to kick and my legs were already numb. The current took me under and I couldn't tell which way was up.

My wolf tried once. A weak lunge toward the surface. She didn't make it.

The water filled my mouth. My dress wrapped around my legs. I stopped fighting because there was nothing left to fight with.

The last thing I thought, before the dark closed over me, was that Kolton would not even know I was gone until someone told him in the morning.

---

Hands.

Strong hands, hooking under my arms, dragging me up through water that felt like it didn't want to let go. My face broke the surface and I choked, river water pouring out of my mouth and nose, my lungs seizing. The hands pulled me onto something solid. A bank. Mud and grass. I lay on my side and coughed until my ribs screamed.

A coat settled over my shoulders. Warm and heavy, smelling like cedar and winter rain.

I tried to lift my head. Managed it halfway. A man crouched beside me, his hand steady on my back, his face shadowed in the dark. I couldn't make out his features. Just the shape of him. Broad shoulders. Calm.

"Breathe," he said. Low voice. No panic in it. "You're safe."

I dragged in air that felt like knives and my wolf stirred.

Not in warning. In something else. Something I didn't have a name for. A recognition so faint I almost missed it, like she'd caught a scent she knew from a long time ago. She didn't growl. She didn't pull back. She just... settled.

That scared me more than the river had.

"Who are you," I managed. My voice came out wrecked.

"Someone who was in the right place," he said.

He lifted me without asking. I didn't have the strength to argue. He carried me through the trees, his steps sure even in the dark, and I felt the bond in my chest — the one that had been severed so cleanly it still ached — stay silent. Kolton wasn't looking for me. Wasn't coming.

I closed my eyes and let the stranger carry me, because I had nothing else left.

---

The safehouse was small. One room, a fireplace, a cot against the wall. He set me down near the fire and pulled a blanket over me without ceremony. Then he stepped back, giving me space, and crouched by the hearth to build up the flames.

I watched him through the haze of cold and exhaustion. He moved like someone who'd done this before. Efficient. No wasted motion. When the fire caught properly he stood and pulled a med kit from a pack by the door.

"Your wrists," he said, nodding at the silver burns.

I held them out. The skin was blistered, red and raw where the rope had bitten deepest. He opened a tin of something that smelled sharp and clean, and when he smoothed it over the burns the pain eased immediately. Proper healer's compound. Not the cheap paste Declan had been using on me for weeks.

"You know what you're doing," I said.

He didn't look up. "I've seen silver burns before."

He wrapped my wrists in clean gauze, his hands careful, and then he sat back on his heels and met my eyes for the first time.

In the firelight I could finally see his face. Strong jaw. Dark eyes that didn't flinch from what they were looking at. No pity in them. Just a steady, assessing calm that made me feel like he'd already catalogued every injury I had and decided what to do about it.

My wolf stirred again. That same faint recognition. I ignored her.

"Why were you there," I asked.

"I've been watching the Ironveil border for two weeks," he said. "Gathering evidence."

"Evidence of what."

"Alpha-tone compulsion. Illegal extractions. The kind of thing the Lycan Council takes an interest in."

The words landed in my chest like stones dropped into still water. I stared at him.

"The Lycan Council," I repeated.

He nodded. "They have jurisdiction over pack Alphas when pack law is violated. What was done to you — the extraction, the coercion — that's admissible before them."

Admissible.

No one had ever used that word in relation to what Kolton had done to me. No one had ever suggested that what happened in the medical wing was anything other than an Alpha's right to manage his mate as he saw fit.

I pulled the blanket tighter and my hand went, without thinking, to the place under my ribs where the recording crystal sat. Still there. Still wrapped in torn fabric against my skin.

His eyes followed the motion. He didn't ask.

"If you have proof," he said quietly, "I can make sure it reaches the right people."

I looked at him for a long time. My wolf was still settled. Still calm. Still inexplicably, disturbingly certain that this stranger was not a threat.

I pulled the crystal out from under my dress and held it in my palm. Small. Hard. The only honest thing I had left.

"This," I said. My voice came out steadier than I expected. "This is Kolton ordering the accidents. All three of them. And Brooke telling him how much wolfsbane to use so I'd keep healing."

He took the crystal carefully, like it was something fragile, and turned it over in his hand. When he looked up again there was something in his eyes I couldn't name. Not anger. Something colder.

"This is enough," he said.

I believed him.
