Chapter 2

I don’t remember much of the three weeks that followed that bloody night in the ditch.

Survival became a dull, grinding blur. I hitchhiked in the cabs of long-haul trucks, slept in damp public restrooms, and stole powdered milk from grocery store aisles. My cracked ribs screamed every time I breathed, and my shattered hip dragged behind me like lead. But I kept Miracle tucked beneath my stained coat, sharing my body heat until there was almost none left to give.

I only had one thought in my head: *Go west.*

When my knees finally gave out, it was in the deep snowdrifts of the Blackwood Ridge, right at the western border of the Crescent Throne. The cold soaked into my skin, numbing the pain. I curled around Miracle on the frozen earth, my breath coming in shallow, rattling wheezes.

Twigs snapped. Heavy paws crunched against the crust of ice.

Three massive wolves stepped from the tree line, their gray coats dusted with frost. They didn’t attack. The lead wolf’s ears swiveled, his golden eyes widening as he caught my scent. His head snapped back, his posture stiffening as he opened a high-priority mind-link.

I squeezed my eyes shut, bracing for the teeth.

The roar of an engine broke through the silence just minutes later. A black truck tore through the snow, stopping sideways on the gravel path.

The driver’s door slammed open. Bootsteps approached fast and deliberate. Through my half-closed eyelids, a familiar, towering figure knelt beside me in the snow.

Cedar and fresh rain.

The scent hit me like a summer downpour, washing over my shivering skin and cutting straight through the frost. It was an old scent from my childhood, one I hadn't smelled in years.

"Kaia," a voice said. It was deep, low, and perfectly steady.

I looked up into Lucas Griffin’s dark eyes. He didn’t wear a crown, but the natural authority rolling off him made the patrol wolves drop their heads in silent deference. He was broader than I remembered, his jaw sharper, his dark hair dusted with snowflakes.

His eyes traveled down my face, lingering on my split lip before dropping to the right side of my neck. Where Gideon’s mate mark had once burned red, there was only a pale, jagged scar. It looked like dead wood.

Lucas didn’t ask who did it. He didn’t ask why I was half-dead on his border.

He slid his large, calloused hands under my back and knees, lifting both me and the bundle against his chest with effortless strength. His body heat was overwhelming, seeping right through my frozen clothes.

He looked toward the valley lights in the distance.

"The gates are open," he said softly.

Then everything went black.

When I opened my eyes, the first thing I saw was light.

Brilliant, golden sunlight poured through three massive, east-facing windows. The glass was clean and clear, showing a view of pine-covered mountains and an open blue sky.

I gasped, my hands flying to my chest.

*The baby.*

"Easy, Kaia. She’s right here."

A woman in crisp white linen stood two feet away, stepping back with open hands so I could see.

Miracle was sleeping in a glass bassinet under a warm, humming heat lamp. A tiny pulse monitor was taped to her foot, beeping in a steady, comforting rhythm. Her premature, sunken cheeks looked pink and full. She was wearing a soft white onesie, her tiny chest rising and falling peacefully.

I let out a shuddering breath and collapsed back against the pillows.

Instinct took over next. I scanned the walls, my eyes darting across the room to count the exits. One: the heavy oak door leading into the hallway. Two: a set of French doors leading out to a stone terrace. Three: an open door leading to an adjoining bathroom.

Three exits. No locks on the inside.

I counted them twice before my heart stopped hammering against my ribs. In Shadowmere, Gideon had kept me in a cellar room with no windows and a single bolted door.

Slowly, I reached up and touched the right side of my neck.

My fingertips brushed the rough, raised tissue of the severed mark. For five years, that spot had throbbed with a constant, sickening heat whenever Gideon touched Lylah, pulsing with his disgust. Now, under the morning sun, it felt cool. Completely silent.

The door to the hallway clicked open.

Lucas walked in quietly. He had changed into a dark gray sweater and jeans, holding a cup of steaming tea. He didn't crowd me. He stopped near the bassinet, looking down at Miracle with an expression I couldn't read.

"Healer Martha says the baby is stabilizing," Lucas said, his voice unhurried. "Her lungs are strong for a premature pup."

"Thank you," I croaked. My throat felt like sandpaper.

He stepped closer, offering me the mug. His fingers lightly brushed mine as I took it, and that same cedar-and-rain scent flared between us. It made the dormant, broken wolf inside me twitch, just slightly, like a spark catching dry grass.

"You don't owe me thanks," Lucas said. "Drink the tea. It has willow bark for the pain."

Over the next few days, the clinic became a quiet sanctuary. Lucas came by every afternoon. He never demanded an explanation, and he never asked about Gideon. He would just sit in the armchair by the window, reading reports or watching Miracle sleep.

On the sixth day, the healers removed the oxygen cannula from Miracle's nose. As her tiny body regulated its own heat, her biological scent began to emerge.

Lucas picked her up from the bassinet, cradling her tiny head in the palm of his hand. He lowered his face, breathing in the soft fuzz on her scalp.

I watched him from the bed.

Suddenly, Lucas froze.

His broad shoulders went rigid. His breath hitched in his chest, and his dark eyes flared with an intense, amber flash—the sovereign gaze of a Lycan Prince. His nostrils flared as he inhaled again, his thumb brushing Miracle's cheek with an almost reverent gentleness.

Cedar. Rain. And something unmistakably ancient.

He didn't say a word. He placed Miracle back down, tucked the blanket around her shoulders, and gave me a long, searching look.

"Rest, Kaia," he whispered.

He turned and strode out of the room.

Curious, I slid my legs over the edge of the mattress, testing my healed hip. I walked quietly to the door and peered through the crack.

Down the quiet hall, Lucas was standing by his study door. His Beta, Soren, was waiting for him, holding a stack of thick legal folios stamped with the Crescent Throne's royal gold wax.

"File it immediately under royal decree," Lucas ordered, his voice dropping to that low, commanding register that brooked no argument. "Miracle Griffin. Sovereign bloodline documentation."

"Understood, Prince Lucas," Soren replied quietly. "Shadowmere has no legal jurisdiction over her now. No pack on this continent does."

Lucas stared out the study window into the western forest, his hands clenched at his sides.

"No one touches them," Lucas said. "Ever again."
