Chapter 5

The car stopped.

I felt the engine cut, felt the shift in momentum, but I couldn't open my eyes. Everything was cold. The bleeding had slowed—not because I was healing, but because there wasn't much left to lose. My healer's mind tried to catalog it: shock, hypothermia, wolfsbane toxicity compounding blood loss. The list kept dissolving into static.

The door opened. Cold air rushed in.

Hands lifted me—the Beta's hands, efficient and impersonal, the same ones that had carried me out of the kitchen. He set me down on frozen ground. Not gently. Not roughly. Just down, like cargo being unloaded at the correct coordinates.

I opened my eyes.

Above me, the sky was still dark. Pre-dawn dark, the kind that sits heavy before the sun decides whether it's worth rising. Trees surrounded us on three sides. The fourth side opened onto empty land—no-man's territory, the stretch between pack borders where rogues moved and no Alpha's authority reached.

The Beta stood over me for three seconds.

His face was the same as it had been in the kitchen—calm, professional, utterly without emotion. But something moved behind his eyes. A flicker. A sentence forming in his throat that his mouth didn't release.

I knew that look. I'd seen it on patients' faces when they realized the wound was worse than they'd thought, when the moment arrived to decide whether to speak or stay silent.

He stayed silent.

He turned. Walked back to the car. The door shut with a soft, final click.

The engine started. The headlights swept across the trees as he turned the vehicle around. Then the red taillights disappeared down the border road, and I was alone.

I lay on the frozen ground and stared at the sky.

My pulse was thin and fast. My hands were numb. The wolfsbane was still burning through my system, slower now but relentless, eating away at what little strength I had left. The rejection wound under my sternum was cold. The place where the baby had been was empty.

I should have been terrified.

I wasn't.

I was just—tired. So tired that fear felt like too much effort, like something I'd have to summon from reserves I no longer had.

I closed my eyes.

Then I felt it.

The mind-link—the severed, dead thing that had been silent since the rejection—flickered. Not open. Not functional. But there, like a phantom limb, like the memory of a pathway that used to exist.

I didn't think. I just reached.

I sent a pulse through the remnants of the bond. Not words. I had no words left. Just a raw signal of existence, a biological scream directed at the man whose pine-and-ember scent had once meant safety, whose wolf had once recognized mine even when mine couldn't surface.

The pulse traveled through the dark.

And landed.

---

I felt him receive it.

For one breath—one single, infinite breath—Lucian went still. I couldn't see him, couldn't hear him, but I felt the stillness through the ghost of the bond, the way you feel a held breath in a silent room.

He hesitated.

Then he let it go.

The bond went silent. Not severed again—it was already severed. Just—abandoned. Crushed under conscious will. He turned away from the flicker, turned back toward whatever he'd been doing, and the connection dissolved into nothing.

I opened my eyes.

The sky was lighter now. Not dawn, but close. My breath came in short, shallow pulls. My vision was narrowing at the edges, going gray and soft.

Under my sternum, the coal was still warm.

*You are not done,* the voice whispered.

I didn't answer. I didn't have the strength to argue with a voice that might not even be real.

I closed my eyes again.

Then I heard it.

Footsteps.

Not boots. Paws. Fast and deliberate, coming through the trees from the direction the car hadn't gone. My pulse spiked weakly. Rogue. Had to be. No pack wolf ran this far into no-man's land alone.

The footsteps stopped.

I forced my eyes open.

A wolf stood three meters away.

Massive. Dark fur, silver-tipped at the edges, with eyes that were too intelligent, too focused. Not a rogue. The aura rolling off him was controlled, deliberate—Alpha-level authority held in check.

He shifted.

The transformation was fast and fluid, and then a man stood where the wolf had been. Tall, broad-shouldered, with dark hair and a scar along his left jaw. He wore running clothes—practical, not ceremonial—and his expression was unreadable.

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he went completely still.

Not a hesitation. An absolute, full-body cessation, the kind of stillness that comes before a decision that will change everything.

His nostrils flared. His eyes widened fractionally.

He took one step forward. Then another. He crouched beside me, and his hand hovered over my shoulder—not touching, just hovering, like he was confirming something his wolf had already told him.

"Silver-bloom," he said quietly. His voice was low and certain. "Lycan."

I stared at him. I didn't understand. I didn't have the strength to understand.

He slid one arm under my shoulders, one under my knees, and lifted me like I weighed nothing.

"I've got you," he said.

Then he ran.
