Chapter 3

The cold hit me first. Then the pain.

I lay on the creek bank, water streaming from my hair, my whole body shaking so hard my teeth rattled. My lungs burned. My throat was raw from coughing. I pressed both palms flat against my abdomen and waited—counting seconds, monitoring the faint flutter beneath my ribs.

Still there. The baby was still there.

I closed my eyes and tried to breathe through the shaking. That's when it happened.

Heat exploded under my sternum.

Not the small coal I'd felt before. This was a furnace blast, sharp and sudden, radiating outward through my chest and down my arms. I doubled over on the frozen ground, gasping, and my vision went silver at the edges—not white, not black, but silver, like light reflecting off water.

My fingernails darkened at the tips. I stared at them through the silver haze. The nails weren't broken or bruised. They were changing. The beds went from pale pink to something deeper, something that looked almost like charcoal under the skin.

Then the voice came back.

*They cannot drown what they cannot see.*

Clearer this time. Not a whisper from far away but a voice inside my own skull, distinct and separate. Female. Calm. Certain.

I opened my mouth to answer and nothing came out. The heat was already fading, pulling back into that deep place in my chest, and the silver at the edges of my vision receded. My fingernails lightened again—not all the way back, but close enough that I could pretend I'd imagined it.

I pressed two fingers to my wrist. Pulse: 94. Too fast, but steady. Alive.

I sat up slowly. Water dripped from my clothes onto the rocks. The forest was silent except for the creek and the distant sound of the pack run moving farther away. No one was coming back for me. No one had seen.

I looked at my hands again. Turned them over. The nails were normal. The heat was gone. But something under my skin was different—awake in a way it hadn't been before.

I got to my feet. My legs shook but held. I wrung out my hair and started walking back toward the pack house.

I did not run. Running would have drawn attention. I walked at the steady, unhurried pace of someone who had nowhere urgent to be, and I memorized the faces of the three wolves who'd held me under.

Middle one: broad jaw, scar above the left eye.

Left one: pale shoulder marking, shorter than the others.

Right one: streak of white through dark fur, moved with a limp on the back left leg.

I would not forget.

---

That night, I ate in the Omega kitchen. Thin stew, hard bread, water that tasted faintly of rust. I was halfway through the bowl when I tasted it.

Metal. Sharp and wrong, underneath the bland vegetable flavor.

I set the spoon down and stared at the bowl. My healer's mind clicked into diagnostic mode. Metallic taste could mean contamination. Could mean blood in my mouth from the creek. Could mean—

I picked up the spoon again and took a smaller sip. Let it sit on my tongue. The taste was there, faint but consistent. Not blood. Something added.

I finished the water and left the stew.

Two days later, the taste was stronger. I'd reduced my food intake, eating only half portions, drinking extra water to flush my system. But the metallic edge was in everything now—the morning porridge, the evening rations, even the bread.

Deliberate.

I went back to my cot during the midday work shift and pulled out the small diagnostic kit I'd kept from the healer's wing. It wasn't much—test strips for common toxins, a few basic reagents—but it was enough.

I tested a sample of the stew from that morning. Dipped the strip, waited thirty seconds, watched the color change.

Purple.

Wolfsbane.

I stared at the strip. My pulse was steady. My hands did not shake. I wrapped the strip in cloth, tucked it into the bottom of my cot, and made a list.

One: Reduce food intake further. Eat only what I could verify wasn't communal.

Two: Increase water. Flush the system as much as possible.

Three: Contact the rogue healer.

I had treated a rogue woman three years ago—knife wound, infected, she'd stumbled into Ironveil territory half-dead and I'd patched her up before anyone official noticed. She'd left me a way to reach her. I'd never used it.

I used it now.

I sent word through Mira, who knew an Omega who knew a rogue runner. The message was simple: *Need consultation. Outside pack grounds. Will pay.*

Then I waited.

---

Lucian's scent hit me two days later in the corridor outside the Omega laundry.

I froze. I couldn't help it. Pine and ember, the scent that had once meant safety, that had once made my wolf—wherever she was—hum with recognition. Now it just made the rejection wound under my sternum ache.

He didn't see me. He was walking fast, his jaw tight, his left hand straightening his cuff in that nervous gesture I knew too well. His Beta trailed a step behind, silent.

I pressed myself against the wall and watched them pass.

Lucian looked tired. No—worse than tired. His eyes had shadows I'd never seen before, and his aura, that commanding Alpha presence that used to fill a room, flickered. Just for a second. Just enough that I noticed.

His Beta noticed too. I saw the way his eyes tracked Lucian's back, the slight tightening around his mouth.

They turned the corner and disappeared.

I stayed against the wall for a long moment, pressing two fingers to my wrist. Pulse: 76. Steady.

Under my sternum, the coal was warm.

*He is breaking,* the voice whispered. *And you are not.*

I believed her.
