Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday night, in front of three hundred wolves who had no idea they were watching me die.

I stood in my designated spot—Omega healer's position, third row from the platform, exactly where the pack hierarchy chart said I belonged—and pressed two fingers to the inside of my wrist. My pulse was steady. That would change in four minutes.

Lucian stood on the alliance platform in full ceremonial dress, the Ironveil crest embroidered across his chest in silver thread I'd commissioned with my family's money. The Duskhollow delegation filled the front rows, their Delta—Melanie Woods—positioned just below the platform in a gown that caught every light in the hall. I'd seen that gown before. In Lucian's quarters. On his floor.

I told myself it meant nothing. Alliances required hospitality. Duskhollow was powerful. This ceremony was political.

I told myself these things while my hand rested against my still-flat stomach, where an eight-week-old secret was the only thing I hadn't sacrificed to this pack yet.

Lucian's Beta called the room to attention. The crowd settled into ceremonial silence—the particular quiet of wolves waiting for their Alpha to speak. I knew this silence. I'd stood in it for ten years, waiting for Lucian to say my name out loud, to acknowledge the pine-and-ember scent that proved the Moon Goddess had chosen us, to stop calling me "the healer" in public and "Isabelle" only when we were alone.

He straightened his left cuff.

That small gesture—his tell, the thing he did when he was about to make a decision he knew was wrong—sent ice down my spine. I watched his hand smooth the fabric once, twice, and my healer's mind cataloged the physical response: elevated heart rate, shallow breathing, the metallic taste of adrenaline at the back of my throat.

"I call this gathering to witness an alliance between Ironveil and Duskhollow," Lucian said, his Alpha tone rolling across the hall with the weight of absolute authority. "And to witness my choice of Luna."

The crowd stirred. Wolves who'd assumed this was a standard territorial agreement leaned forward.

I stopped breathing.

"I, Lucian Carr, Alpha of Ironveil—" His eyes swept the room and passed over me like I was part of the architecture. "—reject you, Isabelle Hoffman, as my mate and Luna."

The mate bond snapped.

There's no good description for what a severed bond feels like. The best I can offer is this: imagine every nerve in your body is a string, and someone cuts them all at once with a blade made of frozen silver. The pain is structural. It doesn't throb or ache—it erases.

I felt the mark on my chest—the invisible one, the one only I could sense because he'd never made it visible—turn cold first, then empty, then gone. Like a door slamming shut in a room that had never existed.

My knees buckled.

The wolf beside me—an Omega kitchen worker whose name I'd healed three months ago—caught my elbow and held me upright. The crowd erupted into cheers as Lucian extended his hand toward Melanie Woods and announced, "I claim Melanie Woods, Delta of Duskhollow, as my chosen Luna and mate."

Melanie ascended the platform in that gown. Lucian placed his hand on her shoulder. The crowd howled approval.

I couldn't hear any of it over the sound of my own pulse fracturing.

The Omega kitchen worker—her name was Mira, I remembered suddenly, Mira with the broken wrist I'd set after a Delta shoved her into a counter—steered me toward a service corridor. I let her. My legs moved on autopilot while my healer's mind ran diagnostics: shock, elevated cortisol, the beginning stages of bond-break trauma, and beneath it all, the faint flutter of a heartbeat that wasn't mine.

Eight weeks. I was eight weeks pregnant with the child of a man who had just rejected me in front of his entire pack.

Mira pushed me into a storage room and shut the door. The cheering from the main hall was muffled but still audible—hundreds of wolves celebrating the end of something they'd never known existed.

"Breathe," Mira whispered.

I pressed my hand against my stomach. Then I pressed two fingers to my wrist and felt my pulse skip and scatter like a stone across ice.

I didn't cry.

I stood in that storage room, surrounded by boxes of ceremonial candles and folded tablecloths, and made a list. It's what I did. It's what I'd always done. When the chaos was too large, I made it small. I made it tasks.

One: The pregnancy. No one knew. That was leverage.

Two: My healer's records. Ten years of pack medical history, vulnerabilities, antidote formulas—all in my handwriting, all stored in the healer's wing. Melanie would come for those within hours. I needed them first.

Three: The two Omega witnesses. Mira had seen me collapse. Someone else in the third row had too—I'd felt hands steady me before Mira took over. Witnesses were evidence.

Four: The rejection wound. It was invisible now, but it would scar. Bond-break scars always did. That was proof.

I lifted my head. Mira was watching me with the wary expression of someone who'd seen too many Omegas break under pressure.

"I need to get to the healer's wing," I said. My voice came out steady. Clinical. The voice I used when I was stopping someone from bleeding out. "Before she does."

Mira's eyes widened. "She'll have guards—"

"She doesn't have authority yet. The Mark Ceremony isn't until tomorrow night." I straightened and felt the rejection wound tear open a fraction wider—a cold, hollow ache beneath my sternum. "I have until dawn."

Mira hesitated, then nodded once. "Service stairs. I'll watch the corridor."

I walked out of that storage room with my hand still pressed against my stomach and my pulse still fracturing under my fingertips. Behind me, the crowd howled again as Lucian and Melanie sealed the alliance with a public scent-mark.

I didn't look back.

I had ten years of medical records to steal, a pregnancy to hide, and exactly nine hours before the woman who'd just claimed my mate's mark came to take everything I'd built.

The bond was gone. Fine.

I'd survived worse than empty.
