Chapter 2

The Howell estate smelled like old money and older secrets. Pine polish on mahogany. Leather-bound books no one read. Cold stone that never quite warmed, no matter how high they stoked the fires.

I sat in a high-backed chair across from my father's desk and kept my hands folded in my lap. They'd left me alone in the study for twenty minutes. Long enough to think. Long enough to remember that Darren Howell didn't waste time on accidents.

The door opened without a knock.

My father walked in, still in his traveling coat, smelling of frost and diesel. He didn't look at me right away. He poured himself two fingers of whiskey from the crystal decanter on the sideboard, swirled it once, and drank half in a single pull.

Then he turned.

"You asked Elijah Grant for a rejection."

Not a question. A statement. Flat. Final.

I didn't answer. There was nothing to say that he didn't already know.

He set the glass down on the desk between us with a soft click. "Do you have any idea what you've done?"

My throat was dry. I swallowed and tasted nothing. "I know exactly what I've done."

"Do you." He leaned back against the desk, arms crossed, looking down at me the way a man looks at a broken tool. "The Grant alliance is the only thing keeping this pack solvent. Elijah's hotels fund our northern expansion. His warriors patrol our southern border. Without him, we are exposed. Weak. And you — " He stopped. His jaw worked. "You would throw that away because your feelings got hurt?"

Something hot and sharp flared in my chest. I kept my voice level. "He crushed my tracker pin under his boot. He humiliates me in front of the pack. He sleeps in Margo's bed more nights than mine. What exactly am I supposed to endure, Father? How much is enough?"

His eyes went cold.

"As much as it takes."

The words landed like stones.

I stared at him. This man who had walked me down the aisle eight months ago. Who had smiled for the photographers. Who had shaken Elijah's hand and called him son.

"You're going to go back to Ironcrest," Darren said quietly. "You're going to apologize to your Alpha. You're going to smile at pack functions. You're going to play the role of a grateful, obedient Luna. And you are never — ever — going to speak the word 'rejection' again."

I felt Sable stir in the back of my mind. A low, uneasy growl. *Don't*, she whispered. *Don't push him.*

But I was so tired.

"And if I don't?" I asked.

My father's expression didn't change. He straightened. Buttoned his coat. And when he spoke, it wasn't his voice anymore.

It was the voice.

The Alpha tone rolled through the room like a physical force, pressing down on my skull, my shoulders, my ribs. My wolf whimpered and flattened inside me, instinct older than thought forcing her into submission. My spine tried to stay straight. It didn't work. My knees buckled and I went down — one knee, then both — my palms hitting the floor to catch myself.

I couldn't breathe.

"If you don't," Darren said, and his voice was so calm it made my skin crawl, "I will have you declared wolfless. I will strip you of your rank. I will brand you Omega in front of the entire pack, and I will cast you out as a rogue with nothing but the clothes on your back. No money. No name. No protection."

I tried to lift my head. The command held me down like a hand on the back of my neck.

"You'll be prey, Eden. Do you understand? Rogues don't last long. Especially not the pretty ones."

My vision blurred at the edges. Not tears. I wouldn't give him tears. Just the pressure. The weight of an Alpha's will crushing down on a wolf that had no choice but to obey.

"Nod if you understand."

I hated him. I hated him so much my teeth ached.

I nodded.

The pressure lifted all at once. I gasped and slumped forward, catching myself on my hands, my hair falling around my face. My lungs burned. Sable whined softly, retreating into the farthest corner of my mind.

Darren's shoes appeared in my line of sight. Polished black leather.

"Good girl," he said.

He walked past me. Poured himself another drink. Sat down in his chair and opened a file on his desk like I wasn't still on my knees in front of him.

"You'll stay here for three days," he said without looking up. "I'll tell Elijah you needed time to reflect. When you return, you'll be composed. Grateful. Obedient."

I pushed myself up slowly. My legs shook. I kept my eyes down.

"Yes, Alpha," I whispered.

He made a satisfied sound in the back of his throat.

"You're dismissed."

I turned and walked out of that room on legs that barely held me. I climbed the stairs to the guest wing. I locked the door behind me. I sat on the edge of the bed and stared at the wall.

And I made a decision.

I would go back. I would smile. I would play the role.

But I would also plan. I would survive.

And when the moment came — when I had money, papers, a way out that he couldn't see coming — I would leave.

I would leave, and I would never, ever come back.

Three days later, my father's driver pulled up to the Ironcrest pack house just after noon. The sky was gray and low, threatening snow. I sat in the back seat in a cream sweater and dark jeans, my hair brushed smooth, my face carefully blank.

Darren walked me to the door himself. A show. He wanted Elijah to see that I'd been handled.

Elijah met us in the foyer. He was in a black shirt, sleeves rolled to his elbows, his expression unreadable. He looked at me the way you look at a package that's been returned.

"Alpha Grant," my father said warmly, extending a hand. "Thank you for your patience. Eden has had time to reflect. She's ready to resume her duties."

Elijah's gray eyes flicked to me. Held for a beat. Then he shook my father's hand.

"Appreciated, Alpha Howell."

That was it. No questions. No concern. Just a polite acknowledgment.

My father clapped him on the shoulder, nodded to me once, and left.

The door closed. The sound echoed.

Elijah turned and walked toward the stairs without a word. I followed because that was what I was supposed to do.

He didn't speak to me the rest of the day. Didn't ask where I'd been or what had happened. At dinner, he sat at the head of the table with his Beta, Silas, and discussed border patrols. I sat three seats down and ate in silence.

That night, I climbed the stairs to the Luna chambers alone. The room was cold. I turned on a single lamp and sat at the vanity.

My reflection looked back at me. Pale. Tired. Hollow-eyed.

I touched the surface of the mirror with my fingertips.

Deep in my mind, Sable stirred. She didn't howl. She didn't rage. She just surfaced, quiet and steady, and pressed against the edges of my consciousness like a hand on my shoulder.

*We plan*, she whispered. *We survive. We leave.*

I nodded slowly.

"Yes," I said aloud, to the empty room, to my wolf, to myself. "We do."
