Chapter 1

The mate bond broke at exactly three minutes past midnight.

I felt it the way you feel a bone snap—sharp, immediate, and wrong in a way that makes your body understand before your brain catches up. The mark on my neck went ice-cold first, like someone pressed a frozen coin against the skin. Then it went empty. Not numb. Empty. Like a door slamming shut in a room that used to have air in it.

I was standing on the ceremonial dais when Ivan spoke the words. Five allied packs had sent representatives. The hall was packed. Candles burned in iron sconces along the stone walls, and the air smelled like pine resin and formal occasions. Ivan had just been crowned Alpha. The ritual called for him to acknowledge his mate next. I'd been waiting for it, my heart doing that stupid flutter thing it does when you're about to be seen by the person you love in front of everyone who matters.

Instead, Ivan stepped forward, looked past me like I was a piece of furniture someone had left in the wrong spot, and said, "I, Ivan, Alpha of the Ironclad Pack, reject you, Aria Brooks, as my mate."

The formal rejection vow. Every word in the right order. Loud enough that the wolves in the back could hear.

My wolf—Sage, who'd been with me since I was fourteen, who I talked to every morning and every night like a second heartbeat—didn't retreat. She collapsed. One second she was there, a steady presence in the back of my mind, and the next second she was gone. Not silent. Gone. Like someone had reached into my chest and pulled her out by the roots.

My knees buckled. I didn't mean for them to. My body just stopped holding me up. I caught myself on the edge of the dais with one hand, fingers scraping stone, and the crowd made a noise—not a gasp, more like a collective intake of breath that nobody let back out.

Ivan still wasn't looking at me. Serena Mills climbed the dais steps in a dress the color of fresh blood and took his arm. She smiled. Not at me. At the crowd. Like she'd just won something.

I pressed my thumb hard against the inside of my opposite wrist. It was a grounding trick my father taught me before he died. Find your pulse. Count it. Stay in your body. I counted three beats before Ivan spoke again.

"Aria Brooks sabotaged the eastern border defenses," he said. His voice carried the Alpha tone now—that resonant, unquestionable weight that makes other wolves' spines straighten without them meaning to. "She weakened this pack for her own gain. The evidence is here."

He gestured, and two warriors stepped forward carrying the wooden case that held my father's maps. Hand-drawn territory charts. Ink on parchment, every line soaked in my father's scent because he'd spent years tracing those borders himself. The maps that made the Ironclad Pack's defenses impenetrable. The maps I'd used my inheritance to protect and expand. The last things I owned that still smelled like him.

Ivan opened the case, pulled the maps out one by one, and fed them into the ceremonial fire pit.

I lunged without thinking. My body moved before my brain could tell it not to. I made it two steps before hands caught my arms—warriors on either side, gripping hard enough that I felt my shoulders pull. I fought them. Not because I thought I could win. Because watching those maps burn without trying to stop it felt like watching my father die a second time.

The parchment curled at the edges first. Then the ink started to blacken. I could see the eastern border route—the one my father had redrawn four times to account for the seasonal river shift—disappearing into ash. The scent of burning paper filled the hall. Under it, fainter, I could still smell the ink. My father's ink. The recipe he'd made himself because he said commercial ink didn't hold scent the way hand-ground pigment did.

Serena was still smiling. I looked right at her, and she didn't even blink. Just stood there with her hand on Ivan's arm, watching my father's life's work turn to smoke.

I didn't scream. I didn't beg. I watched every map burn, pressing my thumb so hard against my wrist that I felt my pulse stutter under the pressure. When the last corner of parchment crumbled into the coals, I stopped fighting the warriors holding me. They didn't let go.

Ivan turned to the crowd. "Aria Brooks is no longer a member of this pack. She is declared rogue. Remove her."

They dragged me out through the main hall, past wolves I'd known since childhood, past the eastern wing I'd paid to rebuild after the fire three years ago, past the healer's quarters where I'd funded the new supply room. Nobody met my eyes. The rain started before we reached the border gate—cold, heavy, the kind that soaks through in seconds.

They shoved me outside the territory line and locked the gate behind me. I stood there in the mud, wolfless, rankless, watching the lights of the pack house through the iron bars. My shoulder was bleeding where I'd scraped it on the gate. The rain washed the blood down my arm in thin pink streams.

I turned and started walking into the forest. I made it maybe fifty yards before I heard the howl.

Serena's voice. High, panicked, coming from inside the pack house. "She attacked me! She came back—she attacked me!"

I spun around. I hadn't gone back. I was fifty yards into the trees. But it didn't matter. I heard the warriors mobilizing, heard the sharp commands, heard the specific metallic click of silver-tipped rounds being loaded.

I ran.

The first shot hit a tree two feet to my left. The second grazed my shoulder—the same one I'd already scraped, and the silver burned like someone had pressed a hot iron into the wound. I didn't stop. I crashed through underbrush, tripped over roots, kept moving because stopping meant dying and I wasn't ready to die yet.

When I finally crossed into unclaimed territory, the shooting stopped. I collapsed against a tree trunk, gasping, bleeding, wolfless, alone. The rain kept falling. I could still smell the smoke from the burning maps on my clothes.

I closed my eyes and tried to find Sage in the back of my mind. The space where she used to be was empty. Not silent. Empty. Like a room with no furniture and no doors.

I pressed my thumb against my wrist and counted my pulse. It was still there. Faster than it should be, uneven, but there.

I was still alive.

That was going to have to be enough.
