Chapter 2

The hallway closed in like a trap.

Andy Bell's kin shifted in unison—six wolves, all massive, all radiating the kind of grief that turns into violence because grief has nowhere else to go. Their fur bristled along their spines. Their eyes were yellow and fixed on me. Claws scraped the floor as they spread out, cutting off the corridor in both directions.

I pressed my back against the wall. My legs were still weak from the bond-severance. My wolf was silent, useless, the same hollow absence she'd always been. I had no shifted form to meet them with. No claws. No fangs. Just my hands and the knowledge that Colter had given them formal permission under pack tradition to take blood justice for their elder's death.

The largest wolf—Andy's eldest brother, I thought—took a step forward. His muzzle wrinkled back from his teeth.

I calculated the distance to the nearest door. Twelve feet. I wouldn't make it three.

"I didn't kill him," I said quietly.

The wolf lunged.

The pack house doors exploded inward.

Not opened. Exploded. The heavy oak slammed back against the walls hard enough to crack the frame. The sound echoed through the hallway like a gunshot.

Bryson Hunter stepped through.

He was flanked by four Lycan Guards in shifted form—wolves twice the size of Andy's kin, their fur silver-white and their eyes glowing with an authority that had nothing to do with anger and everything to do with rank. Bryson himself was still in human form, but the aura rolling off him hit the hallway like a shockwave. It pressed against my chest, made my knees want to buckle, and I wasn't even the target.

Andy's kin froze mid-lunge.

Bryson's voice was quiet. Almost conversational.

"Kneel."

It wasn't loud. It didn't need to be. The command bypassed my ears entirely and landed somewhere deep in my hindbrain, in the place where my wolf should have been. My body wanted to obey before my mind even processed the word.

All six of Andy's kin collapsed. Not slowly. Not with resistance. They dropped like their legs had been cut out from under them, bellies to the floor, heads down, whimpering.

Pack members in the corridor—wolves who'd been watching, waiting to see if I'd die before they had to choose a side—fell to one knee. The compulsion rolled through them like a wave.

I stayed on my feet. Barely. My back was still against the wall and my hands were shaking, but I didn't kneel. I don't know if that was strength or if Bryson's command hadn't been meant for me.

Footsteps thundered from the far end of the hall. Colter arrived at a run, his Alpha aura flaring as he tried to push back against the Lycan command filling his pack house. I saw the moment it hit him—saw his stride falter, saw his jaw clench as he forced himself upright against a compulsion that wanted to drive him to his knees. He stayed standing, but the effort cost him. Sweat beaded at his temples.

Bryson didn't look at him. He looked at me.

"Eva Spencer," he said, still in that quiet, unhurried tone. "I am invoking a Lycan Council tribunal under the Silvercrest Accords. You are under Lycan protection effective immediately."

He stepped between me and the hallway full of wolves. Positioned himself like a wall. Didn't move.

Andy's kin stayed on the floor, panting, their yellow eyes fixed on Bryson's back. One of them tried to rise. The Lycan Guard nearest him growled once—low, soft, final—and the wolf flattened again.

Colter found his voice. "You have no jurisdiction here."

Bryson turned his head. Just his head. The rest of him stayed exactly where it was, blocking the corridor, blocking me.

"I have the jurisdiction your pack signed for," Bryson said. "Three years ago. When you accepted Silvercrest alliance terms."

He reached into his jacket—slowly, deliberately—and produced a folded document. He held it out.

Colter didn't take it.

"The Lycan Council holds standing authorization for oversight of Healer-oath violations," Bryson continued. "Elder Andy Bell's death falls under that mandate. The tribunal convenes in seventy-two hours. Eva Spencer will answer the charges before the Council, not a mob."

Colter's hands curled into fists. "This is pack sovereignty—"

"This is a document you signed," Bryson interrupted. His voice stayed quiet. Stayed level. "If you'd like to challenge the Silvercrest Accords in front of five allied delegations, I'll arrange the forum. But Eva Spencer does not answer to blood justice until the Council rules."

Silas Crane stepped forward from the crowd. The Ironveil Gamma. Holly's uncle. His face was flushed, his aura spiking with the kind of anger that comes from watching your authority dissolve in real time.

"This is Lycan interference," Silas said loudly. "You're using Council law to protect a murderer because—"

Bryson turned.

He didn't raise his voice. Didn't move toward Silas. Just turned and looked at him.

Silas stopped mid-sentence. His mouth stayed open. No sound came out.

The silence stretched. Bryson waited.

Silas took a step back. Then another. His aura collapsed inward like a fire starved of oxygen.

Bryson turned back to Colter.

"Seventy-two hours," he said. "Ironveil Pack will receive formal notice by nightfall. Eva Spencer comes with me now."

Colter's jaw worked. I watched his face in that moment—watched the performance crack just enough to see what was underneath. Not rage. Panic.

He'd expected this to be over. Expected me cornered, dead, buried before anyone outside the pack could ask questions. He hadn't planned for a Lycan Prince walking through his doors with a treaty document and a Guard unit.

He hadn't planned for me to survive long enough to get a tribunal.

"She stays in Ironveil custody until the hearing," Colter said.

Bryson's expression didn't change. "No."

That was all. Just the single word. No explanation. No negotiation.

Colter opened his mouth. Closed it. His Alpha aura flared once, testing, and Bryson's aura met it without effort and crushed it flat.

Andy's kin began retreating down the hallway, still on their bellies, still whimpering. The pack members who'd knelt started rising slowly, carefully, keeping their heads down.

Bryson extended one hand toward me. Palm up. An offer, not a command.

"Whenever you're ready," he said quietly.

I looked at his hand. At Colter's face. At the hallway that had been full of wolves ready to tear my throat out sixty seconds ago.

I pushed off the wall. My legs shook but held.

I didn't take Bryson's hand. Not yet. But I stepped past him, into the space his body had cleared, and I walked toward the shattered pack house doors without looking back.

Behind me, I heard Colter say something low and vicious to Silas.

I didn't stop to hear the response.

I had seventy-two hours to prove I hadn't killed a man.

And for the first time since the bond broke, I had a chance to do it.
