Chapter 5

The sewing machine's needle went up and down under the lamp like a small, steady heartbeat, and I let it hold mine together. Midnight silk pooled across the table, dark enough to swallow light, the high collar finally sitting the way I'd drawn it a hundred times on paper before I trusted my hands to cut it. I tied off the last stitch, bit the thread with my teeth the way my mother used to, and didn't let myself think about how many times I'd sewn something for a man who never once asked what it cost me.

Ruth set a mug down beside the machine without knocking first, because Ruth never knocked on anything in her own house. Steam rose off coffee that smelled faintly burnt, the way she always made it, like she didn't believe in coddling a pot any more than she believed in coddling people.

"You gave that boy a kingdom," she said, arms crossed, watching me smooth the collar flat. "And he gave you back a couch to sleep on." She let that sit a second. "That's not devotion, girl. That's theft."

I didn't answer right away. I lifted the gown by its shoulders and held it up to the lamp, checking the line of the collar against the light, the way the fabric would sit just at the edge of the scar and stop there, framing it instead of hiding it. It was good work. Maybe the best I'd ever done.

"He gave me back more than that," I said finally, quiet, not looking at her. "He gave me back myself."

Ruth grunted. From anyone else it would have meant nothing. From her, I knew exactly what it was.

The summons came the next morning, hand-delivered by a young man in Council gray who didn't linger long enough to accept the coffee Ruth offered on principle. I read it standing in the doorway, cream paper, black print, William Kingsley named in full above a case number that had started as a folder in a windowless kitchen and was now, finally, a weapon with a date on it. Emergency session. To be served upon formal presentation of petition. Tonight.

I dressed alone in the small room Ruth had cleared out for me weeks ago, when I still flinched at loud voices and slept with the light on. The gown fit like it had been made for someone I hadn't finished becoming yet, which I supposed was accurate. I slid my mother's needle into its pouch and pressed it flat against my sternum before I ever touched the door.

The Moonveil car was waiting at the curb, black and unassuming in a neighborhood that didn't know what it was looking at. Damon stood beside it in a dark coat, and when I came down the steps his eyes went to the collar first—not my face, not the whole of the dress, just that high black line of silk framing the scar at my throat. He didn't say I looked beautiful. He didn't say it was a good strategic choice, either, though I could tell some quiet, calculating part of him had already filed it as one.

"Are you ready?" he asked instead.

I reached up and adjusted the collar a half inch, more habit than necessity. "I've been ready for two years."

He held the door and I got in first, the silk settling cold against my legs, and the car pulled away from the curb into traffic that didn't care what was about to happen inside a ballroom twenty minutes north.

Damon didn't fill the silence the way William always used to, words spent like currency to keep a room comfortable. He waited until we'd cleared the bridge before he spoke again.

"Once it surfaces tonight—in front of witnesses—there's no folding it back down," he said, watching me and not the road. "No suppressing it, no quiet version of who you are afterward. Ashwood heir. Public. Permanent. I need you to understand that before we walk in."

It wasn't a warning. I could hear the difference now, after two years of learning the sound of a man managing me for his own comfort. This was something else. This was a man making sure the choice was fully mine before he let me make it.

I turned and looked at him directly—no blade between us this time, no den-stone dark, just lamplight sliding across the car's interior and his eyes steady on mine, waiting.

"Good," I said.

Something shifted in his face, small and unreadable, and he didn't press further. The car slowed. Through the window, the Silverfang Grand Hall rose up in gold light and glass, banners already hung, valets already circling, a whole world getting ready to toast a man who had no idea what was walking toward his front door.

Damon stepped out first, straightened his coat, and turned back to offer his hand.

I took it without hesitation, and together we walked through the doors.
