My Mate Publicly Rejected Me for His Pregnant Mistress
Chapter 2
He didn't let go on the stairs. He didn't let go in the corridor. He pulled me through the crowd, past the guards, past Kennedy's sobbing, back into the Summit hall.
The noise died the second we walked in.
Every Alpha in the region was there. The Ironvale Alpha with his gray beard. The twin Alphas from the river packs. Lunas in silk, Betas in black. A hundred wolves, maybe more. All of them turned. All of them watched.
Maddox walked me to the center of the floor. Right under the high stone dome, where the light came down cold and white.
Then he let go of my arm.
He stepped back. One step. Two. Like I was something dirty he needed distance from.
"Maddox," I said quietly. "You didn't ask me what happened."
"I don't need to." His eyes had gone wolf-gold. "I saw enough."
"You saw me standing at the top of the stairs."
"I saw my pregnant mate bleeding at the bottom of them."
My mate. He said it to her. Out loud. In front of everyone.
Someone gasped near the back. Someone else whispered my name like it was a dirty word.
Maddox lifted his chin. He turned slightly, so the whole room could see his face. Even now, he was performing. Even now, he wanted them to watch him be strong.
He drew in a breath. When he spoke, his voice rolled out in the Alpha tone, deep and heavy, filling every corner of the hall.
"I, Maddox, Alpha of the Blackridge Pack, reject you, Briella, as my mate and Luna of the Blackridge Pack."
For one second, nothing happened.
Then my neck split open.
Not the skin. The mark. I felt it crack like ice on a frozen lake. A thin, cold line shot out from the old bite, then another, then another. White. Freezing. Spreading across my throat like frost across glass.
The bond tore.
I felt it go. Three years of a thread tied around my heart, and someone ripped it out by the root.
The air in the hall slammed outward. A wave of pressure, heavy as a wall. Glasses shattered on a side table. A Luna cried out. The Ironvale Alpha staggered and grabbed a chair. Two guards near the doors dropped to one knee. Even the wolves who hated me felt it. Every wolf felt it.
I hit the floor.
My knees struck first, then my palms. The stone was cold. So cold. I pressed my hands flat against it and held on, because the room was tilting and the inside of my chest was falling away.
There was a hole behind my ribs now. A burning, hollow place where the mark used to live. It hurt the way fire hurts. It hurt the way losing something hurts, when you didn't know how much it was holding you up.
I wanted to scream.
I didn't.
I didn't make a single sound.
I could hear them, though. Whispers. A low, ugly laugh from somewhere on the left. Kennedy's voice drifting in from the corridor, soft and broken. *Is she gone? Is it done?*
And under all of it, the thing inside me moved.
Not a roll this time. A lunge. Like something deep down had heard the bond snap and lifted its head.
I breathed in. I breathed out.
Then I pushed myself up.
One knee. Then the other foot. My legs shook. My neck burned white-cold. I stood anyway, slow and straight, until I was looking Maddox in the eye.
He flinched. Barely. A tiny jerk of his jaw. He'd expected me to stay down.
The whole hall went silent again.
I didn't cry. I didn't beg. I didn't ask him why.
Three years had taught me how to stand still. Now I would use every one of them.
"I, Briella," I said, and my voice came out level, plain, clear enough to reach the back wall, "accept your rejection, Maddox, Alpha of the Blackridge Pack. I release you as my mate. I release the title you never gave me. I take nothing from you. And I leave nothing behind."
The last word left my mouth.
And the world turned silver.
I felt it flood my eyes, hot and bright, like molten metal pouring in. Something huge rose up from that burning hollow in my chest. Old. Enormous. It pushed outward, through my skin, into the air.
One heartbeat.
That was all.
But in that one heartbeat, every wolf in the hall went down.
I watched it happen. The guards. The Betas. The Lunas in their silk. The Ironvale Alpha, who had never bowed to anyone. The twin Alphas from the river packs. Their knees bent like someone had pressed a hand on their shoulders and pushed.
Maddox, too.
His knee hit the stone in front of me. His gold eyes went wide. His mouth opened, but nothing came out.
Then it was gone.
The silver drained from my eyes. The weight lifted. The hollow in my chest was just a hollow again, aching and empty.
Wolves stared at me from the floor. Nobody moved. Nobody breathed.
I looked at Maddox one last time. He was still on one knee, one hand braced on the stone, staring up at me like he'd never seen my face before.
Maybe he hadn't.
I turned my back on him.
I walked across the hall. My footsteps were the only sound. Past the broken glass. Past the Lunas with their hands over their mouths. Past the guards who didn't stop me.
I reached the main doors and pushed them open. Cold air hit my cracked mark like a slap.
I stepped through.
The heavy doors swung shut behind me with a deep, final boom.
And on the other side, not one wolf made a sound.
