Chapter 4

The Silverpine pack house was decorated in silver and gold—elaborate, expensive, and designed to remind every guest exactly whose alliance kept Ironveil standing. Chandeliers hung from vaulted ceilings. The floors gleamed. The air smelled like imported wine and carefully arranged power.

I arrived in the gown Briar's invitation had specified: floor-length, deep blue, unremarkable. Around me, Silverpine wolves wore variations of silver and white—their ceremonial colors. I looked like a shadow against their light. Exactly as Briar intended.

I didn't mind. I needed to be overlooked tonight. Not for survival. For strategy.

I moved through the hall slowly, cataloguing faces. Ironveil's three most senior elders stood near the western wall, speaking in low voices with Aldric Caldwell. Two Silverpine warriors flanked the main entrance. Three visiting Alphas—from neighboring territories whose alliances Aldric was courting—occupied the center tables, their Lunas beside them.

And near the east wall, partially obscured by a marble column, stood a man I recognized from Cecily's description: mid-forties, Beta-ranked, wearing the neutral gray of the Lycan Council's administrative division. His expression was carefully blank. His eyes were not.

I didn't approach him. I filed his location and continued moving.

Preston stood with Aldric near the banquet table, their conversation easy and familiar. He didn't look for me. He didn't need to. The mark on my neck—cold for two weeks now—told him exactly where I was at all times. The mate-bond was a leash he didn't have to hold.

I accepted a glass of wine from a passing server. I didn't drink it. I simply held it, the way a Luna was supposed to.

Briar found me twenty minutes later.

She moved through the crowd with the particular grace of someone who knew every eye in the room would follow her. Her gown was silver—Ironveil's ceremonial color, worn by Silverpine's future Luna. The statement was deliberate. She stopped in front of me, her smile warm and practiced.

"Sarah," she said softly. "I'm so glad you could come."

"Thank you for the invitation."

She leaned closer, as though sharing a confidence between friends. Her voice dropped to a murmur meant only for me—and for the three wolves standing within earshot, all of whom had gone still.

"I wanted to show you something," she said.

She tilted her head slightly, and the pendant around her neck caught the light.

Custom-forged silver. Intricate scrollwork. The exact piece I'd watched Preston commission years ago, the one he'd told me was never completed.

Briar's fingers brushed the pendant's surface, turning it just enough for me to see the inscription on its back.

*For the one I should have chosen.*

The words were small. Precise. Unmistakable.

I felt the cold in my mark deepen—not pain, but a specific absence, like a door that had been locked from the inside.

Briar's gaze stayed on mine. "He has such beautiful taste, doesn't he? I always thought so."

I touched the mark on my neck. My hand didn't shake. I catalogued the pendant. I catalogued the inscription. I catalogued the three wolves within earshot—one elder, two visiting Alphas' Betas—all of whom were now witnesses.

"He does," I said quietly.

Briar's smile sharpened. Just slightly. The kind of shift that meant she'd been hoping for a wound to press and found none.

She straightened. "Enjoy the evening, Sarah."

She walked away, her hand drifting back to the pendant as though it were a talisman.

I stood alone near the banquet table. I didn't move. I didn't look around to see who had noticed. I simply held my untouched wine glass and let the moment settle into the architecture of what I was building.

Inside my mind, Selene's voice was low and steady.

*Let her think she won.*

I set the wine glass on the table. I smoothed the front of my gown. And I waited.

Twenty minutes later, the music stopped.

Briar moved to the center of the hall. Aldric stood beside her, his hand on her shoulder—proud, paternal, the gesture of an Alpha presenting his daughter to the assembled packs. Preston remained near the banquet table, his posture relaxed, his expression calm.

The room went quiet.

Briar's voice carried easily across the hall. She'd practiced this. I could hear it in the rhythm of her words, the careful pauses, the way she let each sentence land before continuing.

"Thank you all for being here tonight," she began. "This alliance between Silverpine and Ironveil has been the foundation of our strength for eight years. And tonight, I want to share something that will make that foundation even stronger."

She placed one hand over her abdomen. The gesture was subtle. Deliberate.

"I'm carrying Alpha Preston's pup. Three months along."

The silence deepened. I felt every wolf in the room go still—not in shock, but in the particular frozen attention of witnesses who understand they are watching something that cannot be unspoken.

Briar continued. Her voice was softer now. Almost gentle.

"Our bond has existed for as long as his mating to Sarah. We've loved each other quietly, waiting for the right time. Preston intends to take me as his chosen mate once the current Luna is formally removed through the pack's mental-health protocols. The healer's reports have already been filed."

She looked directly at me. Her expression was sympathetic. Concerned.

"Sarah has been under a great deal of stress. We all want what's best for her. And for the pack."

She placed her hand on my arm. Her touch was light. Her voice dropped to a murmur meant to sound kind.

"Do you need a moment?"

I looked at her hand on my arm. I looked at the pendant against her throat. I looked at Preston, standing near the banquet table with the same calm expression he'd worn in the infirmary when he handed me the vial of wolfsbane and told me it was for my own good.

Through the mate-bond, I felt his emotional response. Not shame. Not grief. Just the flat, satisfied pulse of a transaction completing on schedule.

The mark on my neck was ice.

I pulled my arm free. Slowly. Without urgency.

"No," I said quietly. "I don't need a moment."

I stepped away from Briar. I turned toward the center of the hall.

Every wolf in the room was watching now. The Ironveil elders. The Silverpine warriors. The three visiting Alphas and their Lunas. The Council observer near the east wall, his neutral expression unchanged but his posture suddenly, unmistakably alert.

I raised my voice. Not loud. Just clear.

"I invoke the Luna Accord."

The words landed like stones in still water.
