Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday night, three minutes after Preston finished his speech.

I didn't know it yet. I was still standing at his side on the banquet hall dais, my Luna smile fixed in place, the mark on my neck radiating its familiar cold. The Ironveil Pack's Anniversary Banquet stretched before us—two hundred wolves in formal dress, crystal chandeliers throwing soft light across tables laden with food I couldn't taste. Preston's hand rested on the small of my back. To anyone watching, we were united. Alpha and Luna. Eight years strong.

"The Moon Goddess chose wisely when she gave me my mate," Preston had said moments ago, his voice carrying across the hall with Alpha authority. "Sarah has been my strength, my counsel, my partner in building the alliance that saved this pack."

Applause had rippled through the room. I'd felt the weight of two hundred gazes, the expectation that I would glow under his praise. Instead, I'd catalogued the names of every Alpha present. Elder Voss from Nightshade. Commander Thane from Clearwater. And at the far table, Aldric Caldwell of Silverpine—Briar's father—watching us with the satisfied expression of a man whose investment had paid off.

I'd pressed my hand to the inner pocket of my gown. The pressed flower from Mia's naming ceremony was there, as always. A ceremony that never happened. A daughter who never breathed.

"I need a moment," I murmured to Preston as the applause faded.

He didn't look at me. "Five minutes. We're greeting the Silverpine delegation next."

I slipped into the corridor outside the banquet hall. The noise dimmed behind the heavy doors. I leaned against the cool stone wall and closed my eyes, counting my breaths the way I'd learned to do when the mark grew too cold and my wolf—Selene, though I hadn't heard her voice clearly in months—pressed against the inside of my ribs like something caged.

That's when I heard it.

Preston's voice, rough and unguarded, coming through an open mind-link. He must have forgotten to close the channel. Or he thought I was too far away. Or he simply didn't care anymore.

"The bond chose wrong, Roland."

I froze.

"My greatest regret," Preston continued, his words landing in my mind like stones dropping into still water, "is never having claimed Briar. If I could unmake the Moon Goddess's decision, I would."

The mark on my neck—the place where his teeth had broken skin eight years ago, where the mate-bond was supposed to live warm and certain—went cold. Not the dull cold I'd grown used to. This was different. Sharp. Final. Like a door slamming shut in an empty room.

Inside my mind, Selene's voice cut through the fog for the first time in months. Not words. A low, furious vibration that felt like claws scraping against the inside of my skull.

*Remember this.*

I pressed my palm flat against the wall. My hand didn't shake. I made sure of that. I'd spent six months preparing for a moment like this—not this exact moment, but something close enough. I'd stopped taking the wolfsbane-laced tonic Preston called my "healing herbs" six months ago. I'd been documenting the falsified healer reports, the pack records, the commission receipt for a pendant I wasn't supposed to know about. I'd memorized Article Seven, Clause Three of the Luna Accord by candlelight every night, reciting it until the words felt like a weapon I could draw when needed.

I was ready.

I just hadn't expected it to hurt this much.

The mind-link went silent. Preston must have realized his mistake and closed the channel. I straightened, smoothed the front of my gown, and walked back into the banquet hall.

Preston was already moving toward the Silverpine delegation. I followed, my Luna smile back in place. Aldric Caldwell rose to greet us, his hand extended. I shook it. I complimented the alliance. I thanked him for attending.

Briar stood three feet away, radiant in a gown the exact shade of Ironveil's ceremonial silver. She met my gaze and smiled—soft, almost sympathetic. Her hand drifted to her throat, where a pendant I'd never seen before glinted under the chandeliers.

I catalogued that too.

When Elder Voss's wife approached—the woman with connections to the Lycan Council's administrative office—Preston steered me away with a gentle pressure on my back. "Not now," he murmured. "She talks too much."

I let him guide me. I noted the redirection. Filed it.

The banquet ended near midnight. Preston and I stood at the door, thanking guests as they left. His hand never left my back. The mark on my neck stayed cold.

When the last guest departed and the hall emptied, Preston turned to me. "You did well tonight."

"Thank you."

He studied my face for a moment, his expression unreadable. Then he nodded and walked toward his office. "I have paperwork. Don't wait up."

I watched him go. I didn't say anything. I didn't need to.

I returned to our quarters alone. I pulled the formal gown from Mia's naming ceremony out of the wardrobe—the one Preston had never touched—and checked the lining. The falsified healer reports were still there. The commission receipt. The pendant order, dated exactly one year after Mia's death, inscribed *For the one I should have chosen.*

I didn't look at them with grief. I looked at them the way I'd practiced looking at them. As evidence. As architecture. As the foundation of an airtight case.

I sat at the window and recited Article Seven, Clause Three by candlelight.

*When a marked Luna accuses her Alpha of bond violation before witnesses, a formal tribunal shall be convened under Lycan Council jurisdiction, and all testimony shall be binding under sovereign law.*

I was ready.

I was simply waiting for the right moment.

Three days later, Briar found me at the edge of Ironveil territory.
