Chapter 4

The conference room smelled like old coffee and territorial anxiety.

I sat at the far end of the table, laptop open, hands folded, and listened. The Redwood Pack's Beta was talking. He had been talking for twenty minutes. His Alpha sat beside him, jaw tight, arms crossed, radiating the kind of frustration that comes from watching someone else speak for you when you want to be the one doing the damage.

Across from them, the Clearwater Pack's delegation sat in matching stiff-backed chairs. Their Luna kept glancing at the map spread between them—a topographical survey of the disputed grazing territory, marked in red where the boundary lines blurred. Every few minutes she would open her mouth like she was going to interrupt, then close it again.

Sera Aldridge sat two seats to my right. She hadn't said a word since the session started. She didn't need to. She had introduced me as a consultant, gestured to the chair, and then let the room do what rooms like this always do—fill themselves with noise until someone figures out how to drain it.

I waited.

The Redwood Beta was circling now, repeating the same argument he'd made fifteen minutes ago in slightly different words. Historical claim. Ancestral grazing rights. The usual. His Alpha's jaw got tighter.

The Clearwater Luna finally spoke. "We've been using that territory for three seasons without incident. Your pack didn't object until—"

"Because we were being courteous," the Beta cut in. "That doesn't mean we relinquished—"

"No one said relinquished—"

I spoke.

"The southern ridge."

The room went quiet.

I didn't raise my voice. I didn't lean forward. I just said it, and the words landed in the space between them like something solid.

The Redwood Alpha looked at me. So did the Clearwater Luna.

"The southern ridge," I repeated. "It's outside the disputed zone. Clearwater's been grazing there for two seasons. Redwood hasn't touched it."

The Beta opened his mouth.

I kept going. "If Clearwater formally cedes the northern plateau—the section you're arguing over—Redwood gains the historical claim they want. And Clearwater keeps the southern ridge, which they've already integrated into their rotation and which Redwood doesn't need."

Silence.

The Clearwater Luna looked at the map. Then at her Alpha. He nodded once, slowly.

The Redwood Alpha uncrossed his arms.

"That works," he said.

Forty minutes later, I was standing outside the building with Sera. The sun was too bright after two hours under fluorescent lights. I blinked and reached for my sunglasses.

Sera lit a cigarette. She didn't ask if I minded. She took a long drag and exhaled toward the parking lot.

"You didn't say a word for thirty-five minutes," she said.

"I was listening."

"Most people listen and then talk anyway." She glanced at me. "You found the pressure point without announcing you'd found it."

I didn't say anything.

She smiled. It wasn't warm, exactly. More like the smile of someone who's just confirmed a suspicion. "I'm fast-tracking you. Senior consultant. You'll take lead on the next territorial dispute. Starts in two weeks."

I looked at her. "I've been here three days."

"And you just resolved something two other consultants couldn't touch in six months." She dropped the cigarette and ground it out with her heel. "Don't waste my time being modest, Isabella. You're good at this. Take the position."

I didn't hesitate.

"Okay."

She nodded. "Good. I'll send the briefing files tonight."

She walked to her car. I stood there for a moment, the sun warm on my face, and felt something I hadn't felt in a long time.

Purpose.

Not borrowed. Not tied to someone else's title or territory.

Mine.

---

The Moonveil Pack Fair was the kind of event I used to dread.

Crowded. Loud. Full of wolves from a dozen packs standing too close and talking too much. Killian had always insisted we attend—good for pack relations, good for visibility. I had smiled and nodded and stood beside him while he worked the crowd, and I had counted the minutes until we could leave.

Now I was here because Cayden had asked, and Ronan had driven, and I had realized somewhere between the cabin and the fairgrounds that I didn't mind anymore.

The waterfront was strung with lights. Vendors sold spiced cider and grilled meat. Children ran between the stalls, shrieking. The air smelled like woodsmoke and sugar.

Ronan walked beside me. Not hovering. Just present. Cayden had peeled off ten minutes ago to talk to someone from his old training cohort. Ronan had stayed.

We were near the pier when I saw them.

Killian and Elouise.

They were standing by the railing, her arm looped through his, her body angled toward him in a way that was too deliberate to be casual. She was wearing the bracelet. The decorative pack crest—silver, etched, catching the light every time she moved her hand.

She saw me first.

Her face shifted. Not guilt. Something closer to triumph. She tightened her grip on Killian's arm and leaned into him slightly, like she was marking territory.

Killian turned.

He saw me, and his whole body went still.

I watched the sequence play across his face in real time. Guilt. Longing. The raw, unguarded realization that I looked different. Better. More present than I had ever been standing beside him.

I didn't flinch. I didn't look away.

I just looked at him, and I felt nothing.

No ache. No anger. No hollow space where the bond used to press.

Nothing.

Ronan's hand brushed mine. Not holding. Just there. His scent wrapped around me—cedar and pine and cold stone—and my wolf stirred.

Killian's eyes tracked the movement. He saw Ronan. He saw the way I was standing. He saw everything he had lost and everything I had chosen instead.

Elouise said something. I didn't hear it. I wasn't listening.

I turned and walked away.

Ronan followed.

Behind us, the fair continued. The lights. The voices. The smell of woodsmoke and sugar.

I didn't look back.
