Chapter 2

The cabin was smaller than I expected.

It sat at the edge of neutral territory, ten miles past the Shadowvale border, tucked into a stand of pines that smelled like winter even in late summer. Ronan had handed me the key at three in the morning without comment. I had taken it the same way.

Now it was just after dawn. I stood in the kitchen with my hands wrapped around a mug, watching steam rise off chamomile, and tried to figure out where the ache was coming from.

It wasn't in any one place. That was the strange part. The bond had sat just under my sternum for five years—a low, warm pressure I had learned to live with the way you learn to live with a sound outside your window. Now it was gone, and the space it left was not empty. It was loud. A kind of phantom weight, pressing on nothing.

My wolf stirred.

I had braced for her to be weaker. That was what the stories said—a rejected she-wolf's wolf goes thin, withdraws, mourns. But mine felt different. Lighter, almost. Like a creature that had finally been allowed to put down something she'd been carrying too long.

*Better*, she murmured. Just that one word.

I took a slow sip of tea. "Yeah," I said quietly. "Me too."

By mid-morning I had pulled out my laptop and started writing emails. The regional pack coalition had been trying to recruit she-wolf negotiators for months. I had always meant to respond and never had time—Killian preferred I stayed close to the pack house. Now I had nothing but time. I drafted a careful, professional message to Sera Aldridge, the senior coordinator. Three paragraphs. No mention of the rejection. Just my qualifications and my availability.

I hit send before I could second-guess it.

The phantom ache pulsed once and faded.

---

Ronan came back the next morning.

He didn't call ahead. I heard the truck pull up the gravel drive, and when I opened the door he was already unloading boards from the bed—pine shelving, brackets, a toolbox that looked like it had seen real use.

"The shelf in the pantry is sagging," he said. "And the heating unit's going to fail before October. I can fix both today."

I stood in the doorway in my socks. "You looked at the heating unit?"

"On the drive in. The vent pattern was wrong."

I didn't know what to say to that. I stepped aside and let him in.

He worked the way he did everything—quietly, deliberately, without filling the space with conversation. I made him coffee. He thanked me and set it on the windowsill and forgot about it. I watched him kneel by the heating unit with a screwdriver, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms, and I noticed his scent before I noticed I was noticing it.

Cedar. Pine. Something cleaner underneath, like cold air on stone.

It filled the cabin the way warmth does. Not pushy. Just present.

My wolf went very still inside me.

I turned back to my laptop and pretended to read the same email three times.

He worked through the morning and into the afternoon. He installed the shelves. He fixed the heating unit. He tightened a hinge on the back door I hadn't even known was loose. When he left, he said, "Call if anything else gives." That was it. No pause. No glance held a beat too long.

The truck pulled away. I closed the door.

The scent stayed.

It was still there that night, faint, when I went to bed. I noticed it. I didn't say anything about it. Not even to my wolf.

The next day it was gone, and I noticed that too.

---

The first letter arrived on the fourth morning.

It came through pack channels—official courier, Shadowvale seal pressed into the wax. I knew his handwriting before I broke the seal. I had spent five years watching that handwriting on Christmas cards he signed too quickly and birthday notes he forgot to date.

*Isabella,*

*I am writing to request a formal meeting to discuss the dissolution of our bond. As Alpha of Shadowvale, I—*

I stopped reading.

I walked to the fireplace. I lit a match. I set the letter on the kindling and watched the edges curl black, then orange, then white. The Shadowvale seal melted last, the wax pooling and bubbling like it was trying to crawl back to him.

*Dissolution.* As though I had filed paperwork. As though the rejection were a contract he could renegotiate if he used the right tone.

I made tea.

The second letter came three days later.

The envelope was thinner. The handwriting was wrong—looser, sliding off the line, the loops of the letters dragging like he had written it tired or drunk or both. The seal was hand-pressed, slightly crooked.

*Bella, please—*

I burned it.

I didn't read past the first line. I watched it catch and crumble and I drank my tea slowly, and when it was gone I rinsed the mug and set it upside down on the drying rack.

My wolf was quiet inside me. Not satisfied. Not angry. Just present, the way she should have been all along.

Outside, the pines moved in a wind I couldn't hear from the kitchen. Somewhere a truck engine started, far down the road, and was gone before I had time to wonder whose it was.

I opened my laptop and got back to work.
