Chapter 3

Three days after the ceremony, the rain finally stopped, leaving behind a cold, biting wind.

I sat alone by the window booth of a roadside diner on neutral territory, nursing a cup of black coffee and a plate of scrambled eggs. I forced myself to eat every bite. I had a child to feed now, a tiny life nestled beneath my ribs, depending entirely on my strength.

Outside, tires crunched over wet gravel.

A familiar black pickup truck pulled into the parking lot. My stomach dropped. Jordan sat behind the wheel, his jaw set in a hard line. In the passenger seat sat Elodie, wearing a lavender sweater that showed off the fresh, angry red mark on her throat.

I laid two bills on the table, pulled my coat tight, and headed for the front door. I had no desire to breathe their air.

I barely made it five steps into the gravel lot before Jordan cut across my path.

"We need to talk," he said. His voice was rough, devoid of the smug confidence he’d worn three nights ago. Shadows clung to the skin beneath his eyes. Without the ward holding Ironveil's borders, he looked like a man who hadn’t slept in seventy-two hours.

Behind him, Elodie stepped down from the cab, crossing her arms and offering me a tight, pitying smile. "Jordan just wants to settle things quietly, Mila. For everyone's sake."

I ignored her completely and looked Jordan dead in the eye. "We have nothing to talk about."

"You took pack property," Jordan snapped, his temper flaring at my dismissal. "Medical supplies. Trade ledgers. Derek says half the reserve funds are unaccounted for."

"I took my clothes, my mother's herb satchel, and the identification papers I came with," I said, my voice dead calm. "Everything else in that pack house was bought with ten years of my unpaid labor. Get out of my way."

I took a step to brush past him.

Jordan’s hand shot out, catching my upper arm in a bruising grip. "You don't walk away from me."

"Let go," I said, my fingers instinctively pressing the base of my throat.

He didn't. Instead, his eyes darkened, and his chest expanded. Frustration and wounded pride stripped away whatever restraint he had left. He reached for the weapon he had used to bend me to his will for a decade—his Alpha tone, pushed straight through the lingering, phantom static of our severed bond.

*"Kneel and answer my questions,"* he roared.

The command hit my body like a falling beam of solid iron.

My knees buckled instantly. The air rushed out of my lungs, and every muscle in my spine locked up, screaming at me to submit, to bow my head and grovel in the dirt before my Alpha. The instinct was deep, biological, and suffocating.

*Bow,* the Alpha tone demanded. *Crawl.*

*No.*

Deep in the hollow of my chest, where the pack had claimed I was hollow and wolfless, something fierce woke up with a deafening roar. It wasn't human panic. It was ancient, predatory fury.

A surge of white-hot power rushed up my spine and exploded behind my eyelids.

For a single, violent second, my vision burned pure silver.

The invisible chains of Jordan's Alpha command didn't just bend—they shattered. A sharp, cracking sound echoed in the spiritual space between us, snapping like bone.

My spine jerked straight. My knees locked. I stood tall, staring straight into his face.

Jordan staggered back a half-step, his hand ripping away from my arm as if I had burned him. The color drained from his face, leaving him paper-white.

"What... what was that?" he breathed, his pupils trembling.

Beside him, Elodie gasped, stumbling backward until her back hit the truck door, her hand flying to her throat.

Before Jordan could recover, the diner door swung open behind me.

Cooper stepped out onto the porch.

He didn't shout. He didn't rush forward. He simply took two slow, measured steps down the wooden stairs, and then he let go.

The full, undiluted weight of his Lycan royal aura dropped over the parking lot like a falling sky.

It was terrifying. The air pressure plummeted, turning thick and ice-cold. Jordan’s Alpha presence—the dominance he had terrorized me with for ten years—was crushed flat instantly, snuffed out like a match held under a boot.

Jordan choked on a breath, his boots sliding back in the gravel as the invisible weight bore down on his shoulders. He could barely stay on his feet. Next to him, Elodie dropped her gaze to the dirt, her wolf whining pathetically in her throat as she trembled under the royal pressure.

Cooper stopped beside me. His silver eyes fixed on Jordan, stripped of every trace of childhood warmth.

"Touch her again," Cooper said, his voice quiet, steady, and deadlier than a drawn blade, "and I will forget we were ever friends."

Jordan clutched his chest, staring at Cooper with a mix of fury and raw, humiliated disbelief. His Alpha command had failed on a wolfless woman, and now he was being forced to choke on the gravel by the man he called a brother.

Without a word, Jordan spun around, hauled himself into the truck, and slammed the door. Elodie scrambled into the passenger seat, not daring to look back as Jordan tore out of the lot, spraying wet stones in every direction.

He didn't speak to her the entire ride home. I knew him well enough to know what that silence meant. The humiliation was a poison in his veins, and it was spreading fast.

Within forty-eight hours, the retaliation came.

The inter-pack mind-link network chimed with an emergency regional alert. Jordan formally stripped my name from the Ironveil ancestral registry, branding me an unaffiliated rogue before every pack in the northern quadrant. In the werewolf world, labeling a pregnant she-wolf a rogue was a death sentence. It signaled to every roaming pack and territory guard that I had no protection, no rights, and that sheltering me was an act of hostility against Ironveil.

An hour later, Wren forwarded me the official filing submitted to the Lycan Council.

Derek Holt had done his dirty work. Ten years of my life—every herb shipment I bought to heal dying warriors, every diplomatic fund I managed to keep Ironveil safe—had been recategorized as grand theft.

Jordan had filed fabricated embezzlement charges against me.

Attached to the bottom was a formal petition, signed in Jordan’s bold, arrogant scrawl: an emergency request for full, sovereign custody of my unborn child the moment it drew breath, on the grounds that a branded, wolfless rogue was legally unfit to raise a pup of Alpha blood.

I stared at the document on the glowing screen.

He thought he was backing me into a corner. He thought fear would make me crawl back to his feet.

I closed my phone, laid my hand over my stomach, and felt that fierce, synchronized pulse thrumming beneath my palm.

He had no idea what he had just awakened.
