My Mate Let Our Daughter Die for His Heir

Chapter 5

The clinic was quiet in the afternoon.

I'd timed it that way—Malcolm's usual Wednesday visits happened in the morning, and the administrative staff cleared out by three. Arthur Vance kept minimal hours outside of emergencies. The building had that particular stillness of a medical facility between crises, the kind of quiet that makes footsteps echo.

I carried the rejection papers in a folder against my chest. The letter to my father was still sealed in my coat pocket, pressed against my ribs. I'd rehearsed what I would say—calm, measured, the same disciplined grace I'd been performing for three years. I would hand Vance the papers. I would inform him that the Silvercrest bloodline would be conducting an independent investigation into the financial discrepancies surrounding my daughter's birth. I would leave before he could construct a response.

Clean. Efficient. Done.

I moved down the hallway toward his office. The fluorescent lights hummed overhead. My wolf was awake in a way she hadn't been in years—not pacing, not anxious, just present with a sharp, focused attention that made every detail feel important. The scuff marks on the tile. The faint smell of antiseptic. The partially open door at the end of the hall.

I stopped.

Voices. Low, casual, the register of men who weren't expecting to be overheard.

"—additional payment for ongoing discretion."

Arthur Vance's voice. I recognized the cadence, the slight nasal quality he got when he was negotiating.

A pause. Then Malcolm's voice, irritated in the way I knew too well—the edge he got when someone was asking him for something he'd already decided to refuse.

"We agreed on the terms three years ago."

"Terms change," Vance said. "The longer I maintain the records in their current state, the more risk I carry. You understand how these things work."

Another pause. I stood in the hallway, folder pressed to my chest, and my wolf went very, very still.

"The pup was never an issue," Malcolm said finally. "She never suspected. Three years and she still grieves a dead pup that's been alive the whole time. That's the kind of woman she is—she'd rather mourn than question."

The world narrowed.

Not all at once. It happened in stages, like my brain needed time to process each word individually before it would let them form a sentence.

The pup. Alive. Three years.

Vance's voice came through the door again, fainter now, like I was hearing it from underwater. "The tonic was permanent. Untraceable. You made the right call there—no future complications, no rival heirs. And the transfer to Eliana went smoothly. Twenty-four hours, no witnesses outside the surgical team."

"Which you paid off," Malcolm said.

"Which you reimbursed me for. Generously. But as I said, terms change."

I couldn't feel my hands.

The folder slipped. I didn't mean to let go—I was still standing, still breathing, still performing the appearance of a person in control—but my fingers just opened and the papers scattered across the tile in a soft cascade of white.

The sound was small. A whisper of paper on stone.

It was enough.

The voices stopped. Footsteps. The door swung wider.

Malcolm appeared first, Vance just behind him. Malcolm's face did something I'd seen a thousand times over three years—that quick calculation, the rapid assessment of a situation and the immediate selection of a response. His eyes tracked from my face to the papers on the floor and back up.

He didn't look surprised. He looked inconvenienced.

"Sabrina," he said.

My name in his mouth. The same name he'd called across dinner tables and through hallways and into the dark of our bedroom for three years. It sounded like a stranger's word.

"You were never supposed to be in this building," he said.

Not: I can explain. Not: It's not what you think. Just a flat statement of fact, delivered in the same tone he used for pack logistics.

I stared at him. At the man I had marked. The man I had tried for three years to reach through a bond that gave me nothing back. The man whose son I had raised and whose pack I had managed and whose coldness I had met with patience because I believed—I had genuinely believed—that the Moon Goddess had a plan.

Vance shifted behind him. His face had gone pale.

Malcolm's Alpha tone rose. I felt it the way I'd felt it a hundred times before—that particular pressure, the weight of his wolf's authority pressing against mine, commanding submission.

"Go back to the pack house," he said.

For three years, that tone had worked. My wolf had bent under it, not because she was weak but because I had been suppressing her, holding her down beneath the role I'd chosen, the faith I'd committed to.

She wasn't suppressed anymore.

Something inside me—chained, dormant, waiting—broke free.

It didn't feel like rage. It felt like waking up. Like the moment you realize you've been holding your breath and your body just takes over and forces you to inhale.

My eyes flashed.

I didn't know that's what was happening—not consciously, not in words—but I felt the shift. Gold and silver, dual-spectrum, the signature of Silvercrest royal blood that no wolf in Ironvale had ever seen because I had spent three years burying it.

My aura erupted.

It wasn't a choice. It was my wolf, fully awake for the first time in three years, stepping into the space she'd always been meant to occupy. The air in the hallway went heavy, dense, crushing. Ancient. The kind of weight that doesn't come from anger but from bloodline, from hierarchy, from the inviolable structure of what a Lycan Princess is in a world of pack Alphas.

Vance dropped to his knees. The sound his body made hitting the tile was wet and graceless—pure involuntary submission. Behind him, two staff wolves flattened against the wall, whimpering.

Malcolm staggered backward.

His Alpha wolf—the wolf that had never once surfaced in three years of our bond, not during the mark ceremony, not during our anniversary, not once—cowered. I saw it in his eyes, the way his posture collapsed inward, his head tilting just slightly to expose his throat.

He recognized what his conscious mind had refused to process for three years.

I outranked him. At a cellular level. In the hierarchy that governed every breath and heartbeat of our world.

I had always outranked him.

I didn't scream. I didn't cry. I looked at the man who had stolen my daughter, poisoned my wolf, and spent three years using my devotion as a tool, and I spoke one sentence.

My voice carried the weight of a dynasty.

"You will tell me where my daughter is."
