Chapter 4

For three days, my wolf didn't answer me.

I would reach for her the way I always had — a quiet call in the back of my mind, a check that she was still there — and find nothing. Not silence exactly. Silence would have meant she was choosing not to speak. This was absence. A door standing open onto an empty room.

I couldn't shift. I tried twice, alone in my father's old training yard, and both times my body simply refused, as if the part of me that knew how to become something else had been switched off at the source. Cressida said it would take time. She didn't say how much, and I didn't ask, because I wasn't sure I wanted to know the answer.

The dissolution notice arrived on the fourth day.

It came by formal courier, stamped with the Pack Council seal, and I read it standing in the hallway with my coat still on. A hearing had been scheduled. Territorial claims had already been filed — three of them, from packs that bordered Silverpine on the north, east, and south, each one drafted with the kind of polished, patient language that meant lawyers had been involved for longer than the ink suggested. They weren't waiting for the hearing to divide my father's legacy. They were already doing it.

I folded the notice and set it on his desk, next to the alliance drafts no one had wanted.

That evening, I went up to my old room and pulled the box out from under the bed.

I hadn't opened it in months. I didn't open it now, either — I just carried it, heavier than it had any right to be for something full of paper, down through the pack house and out across the frozen grounds to the eastern border, to the spot where my father used to sit every evening, facing the direction trouble came from.

I knelt in the snow and opened the lid.

Invitations. Dozens of them, in different drafts, different fonts, different phrasings I'd agonized over for years — *You are cordially invited to the mate marking ceremony of Alpha Julien Burke and Adaline Warren* — none of them ever sent, because there had never been a date to put on them. I'd told myself, every year, that next year would be the year. I'd kept them the way some people keep hope: quietly, privately, refusing to look too closely at what the keeping actually meant.

I lit a match.

The paper caught fast. Seven years of careful cursive curled black and lifted into the dark, and I watched the smoke rise without a single tear coming. I waited for it. I thought grief might finally break through the numbness the rejection had left behind. It didn't. There was only a strange, clean quiet, like a wound finally being allowed to close over instead of being picked open again and again.

When the last invitation was ash, I stood, brushed the snow from my knees, and walked back inside.

Cressida found me the night before the hearing, sitting in my father's study with his Alpha ring cold against my collarbone, his border maps spread across the desk under lamplight. I'd been tracing old treaty lines with my finger, memorizing boundaries that might not belong to Silverpine by tomorrow evening.

She didn't say anything at first. She just set a sealed case on the desk beside the maps, the latch heavy and official-looking, and pulled out the chair across from me.

"What is it?" I asked.

"Everything," she said. "The claw patterns from the attack. The timeline. The nature of your injuries, documented the night it happened, before anyone had a chance to argue about what they meant." Her eyes met mine, steady. "The miscarriage wasn't an accident of bad luck, Adaline. I wrote down exactly what it was, in case a day came when someone needed to hear the truth instead of a story."

I stared at the case for a long moment. "Why give it to me now?"

"Because your father always said the truth outlasts the lie," she said quietly. "He just usually had to wait longer than he liked for people to be ready to hear it. Keep this safe."

I took the case, unlocked my father's bottom drawer, and set it inside next to his old ledger. I didn't know, locking it away, whether it would ever matter to anyone but me. I locked it anyway.

The hearing chamber was cold the next morning, despite the fire burning in the hearth at the far end. I walked in alone — no mate at my side, no wolf I could fully feel, my father's ring resting against my throat like the only weight keeping me upright. Silverpine's last elders sat behind me in a row, quiet, resigned, already dressed like people attending a funeral rather than a council session.

Across the long table sat the rival Alphas, their territorial claims stacked neatly in front of them, barely bothering to hide the satisfaction in their eyes.

The Council chair cleared his throat and lifted the dissolution document.

"We are gathered today," he began, "to formally review the standing and future of the Silverpine Pack—"

The chamber doors blew open behind me with a crack like thunder.
