Chapter 3

Walker didn’t wait the three days.

By seven o'clock that evening, the heavy ceremonial drums began to pound across the valley. Walker declared an emergency autumn bonfire, calling it a "pack unity rite." Everyone knew it was a lie. It was an ambush.

Two broad-shouldered warriors marched me out of the pack house and down to the clearing. They kept their hands off me, but they boxed me in, their faces tight with unease. I was still their Luna, but everyone could smell the wolfsbane clinging to my skin.

The clearing was packed. Hundreds of wolves stood in concentric circles around a roaring fire that spat sparks into the black sky. The heat washed over my face, but inside, I felt like ice.

I scanned the crowd through the rising smoke. Standing near the front row of the council section was Elder Rhys. His hands were clasped behind his back, his gray hair silvered by the firelight.

I held his gaze. For one second, Rhys held mine.

Then he gave a single, microscopic nod.

My chest loosened just enough to draw breath. The oral-witness protocol was recorded. It was pack law. It wouldn't stop whatever Walker had planned for tonight, but it meant my words were already carved into the elder record.

Walker stepped into the center of the ring.

He wore his formal Alpha coat, the black wool trimmed with silver. He looked tall, broad, and unshakeable. He didn't look at the crowd. He looked directly at me.

The drums abruptly stopped. The clearing fell dead quiet, save for the crackle of burning pine.

"Emily Ford," Walker called out. His voice was steady, resonant, and cold as a frozen lake. "Step forward."

My escorts nudged me forward. I stepped into the cleared dirt of the inner circle, stopping ten feet from him.

Walker didn't hesitate. There was no private warning. No quiet conversation behind closed doors. He raised his chin, letting his Alpha aura expand until the pressure made the younger wolves at the perimeter whimper.

Then he spoke the ancient words.

"I, Walker, Alpha of Ironmaw, reject you, Emily Ford, as my mate and Luna."

The words hit like a physical blade.

On the left side of my neck, the mate mark flared with sudden, blinding heat—and then died. It didn't just fade. The skin went completely, unnaturally numb, turning from living flesh into a dead, gray strip of scar tissue.

The bond snapped like a frozen cable under tension.

A sharp, violent crack echoed through the clearing. My Luna aura—the soft silver glow that had protected this pack for three years—erupted into visible view. Right before their eyes, it fractured. Cracks of light splintered outward from my chest like a mirror struck by an iron hammer.

My knees gave out. I hit the dirt hard, my palms scraping against sharp pebbles.

A collective gasp ripped through the pack. Wolves surged forward an inch before their instincts checked them. A public rejection at an open bonfire was an atrocity Ironmaw hadn't seen in two centuries.

Deep inside my skull, my wolf didn't whimper.

Drugged and starved on suppressants for months, she rose up from the dark. She threw her head back and let out a soundless, deafening scream.

It was not grief.

It was absolute, blinding fury.

*Get up,* she snarled, clawing at my ribs. *Do not grovel for this coward. Get up!*

I pressed two shaking fingers to the inside of my wrist. The pulse was erratic, but it was beating. I planted my boots into the earth and pushed.

My knees trembled violently. My broken aura still flickered around my shoulders like dying embers. But I straightened my spine. I lifted my chin until my eyes locked with Walker's.

His jaw went tight. He hadn't expected me to stand. He had expected me to curl into a ball and weep.

"Samantha Carlson," I said.

My voice wasn't loud, but in the dead silence of the clearing, it carried to every ear. It was the calm, measured tone I used when triaging bleeding warriors.

"She lives at Safe House Four," I continued, unhurried, cutting through the shock. "Walker has spent four years hiding her. He had the pack healer pump me full of illegal doses of wolfsbane so he could drill into my pelvic bone and harvest my marrow—twice a month—to keep Samantha's dying child alive."

Walker’s face drained of color. "Silence!" he roared, taking a step toward me.

"Three years ago, Samantha shoved me down the marble stairs and killed my pup," I spoke louder, holding my ground. "Walker sealed the medical records to protect her. And this morning, he planted my scent on fence wire to frame me for an attack on his own bastard."

The crowd erupted into hushed, horrified whispers. Pack elders exchanged stunned glances.

I looked straight past Walker to the front row.

"Councilman Rhys!" I called out clearly. "Under ancient Ironmaw law, a rejected mate retains the right of appeal until the first dawn. I invoke the sovereign right of a Luna tribunal!"

The words struck the clearing like a thunderclap.

The elders froze. Rhys didn't blink.

Walker snapped.

His face twisted with savage rage. He lunged forward, his iron fingers clamping around my upper arm like a vice. He squeezed so hard I heard the fabric of my sleeve rip.

*"I gave an order!"* Walker bellowed, his full Alpha tone detonating across the field, vibrating the dirt under our feet. *"Stand down! Every warrior, stand down!"*

The biological force of his voice forced the pack to drop their eyes, pinning them to the earth. Not a single warrior moved.

Walker yanked me violently toward the pack house. I stumbled, but I didn't fight him. I didn't scream or thrash. I let him drag me through the dirt and the smoke, keeping my head high.

As he pulled me past the council line, I kept my eyes locked on Elder Rhys.

Rhys stood rigid against Walker's Alpha pressure. And as I passed, I saw the old wolf reach down into his coat, pulling free the dark leather binding of the elder record-tablet.

With a steady hand, he pressed his thumb to the wax seal.

The tribunal was logged.

Walker thought he was dragging me to my end. He didn't realize he had just signed his own.
