Chapter 2

I spent two nights at Karla's kitchen table, surrounded by documents my mother had made me memorize when I was sixteen.

At the time, I'd hated it. Page after page of Lycan Council procedural codes, bloodline sovereignty clauses, territorial inheritance law—dry, archaic language that felt utterly useless. My mother had been patient and relentless. "You'll understand when you need to," she'd said.

I understood now.

"This section here." I tapped the passage on scent-verification protocols. "It's real. Council law from 1847, never repealed. We embed the fake clause right next to it."

Karla leaned over my shoulder, reading. "Lycan Bloodright Rite. Sounds legitimate."

"Because half of it is." I began writing, layering fiction within genuine Council language with the precision of someone who'd spent seven years managing Shadowmere's diplomatic correspondence while Dexter took credit. "The scent-verification requirement is real. The seven-day observation period follows actual protocol. We're just... redirecting the application."

"To require a biological heir." Karla's voice was flat, approving.

"To require a biological heir," I confirmed.

We worked in silence. I forged my mother's signature on the territorial deed—I'd practiced it enough times as a girl, playing at being Luna before I understood what the role would cost. Karla constructed the Council seal using a template she'd acquired through channels I didn't ask about. By dawn, the documentation looked like it had been filed sixty years ago.

I held the final page up to the light. "He'll check it."

"He'll check it the way a man checks anything when he's already decided what he wants to find," Karla said. "Quickly. Greedily. He'll see three hundred acres and stop reading."

She was right. I knew she was right.

I folded the documents and locked them in my private desk.

Three days later, I chose the pack dinner carefully. Full attendance—Dexter, his mother, senior pack members, and Margo serving in her nursery-Omega role. I wore the pale blue dress Dexter liked, the one that made me look softer than I was. I braided my hair the way his mother approved of.

I waited until the third course, when the wine had been poured and the conversation had settled into comfortable pack business.

"Oh, I nearly forgot." I set my fork down, looking embarrassed. "Mother's territory transfer paperwork came through this week. The Council finally cleared it."

Dexter glanced up. "The Greyvale acres?"

"Yes." I smiled, sheepish. "Though there's this ridiculous old clause attached to it. Lycan Bloodright something. I'd hoped to just quietly ignore it, but apparently—"

"What kind of clause?" His mother's voice was sharp.

I hesitated, like I hadn't meant to bring it up at all. "It requires a scent-verified biological heir to activate sovereignty. Some archaic tradition about bloodline purity. It's embarrassing, really."

Across the table, Dexter had gone very still. I felt it through the mate bond—a sudden spike of interest, cold and calculating.

"Three hundred acres," his mother said slowly. "Prime packland."

"Yes, but the heir requirement makes it complicated. The Council has to send an envoy, there's a seven-day observation period..." I waved my hand dismissively. "I'm sure we can work something out eventually. Kinslee's still young."

I watched Dexter's pupils dilate. Watched him do the math. Kinslee—Omega-blooded, silver-allergic—would never pass a Lycan scent verification. But he couldn't say that. Not here. Not in front of the pack.

His mother's fork paused halfway to her mouth.

Margo, refilling water glasses, went very still.

The hook was in the water.

I turned the conversation to something else—upcoming ceremonies, trade agreements, nothing important—and finished my dinner with my Luna smile intact.

That night, Dexter didn't wait until we were in bed.

He caught me in our bedroom the moment I closed the door, his hand on my wrist, not hard but firm. The Alpha tone thrummed under his voice—not quite compulsion, but pressure.

"Tell me about the Bloodright Rite."

I blinked at him, letting confusion cross my face. "I told you at dinner. It's just an old—"

"All of it." His grip tightened slightly. "Requirements. Timeline. What the Council envoy actually verifies."

I let my shoulders tense, like he was making me uncomfortable. Like I didn't want to discuss it. "Dexter, it's late—"

"Lillian." The Alpha tone pressed harder.

I exhaled slowly, looking down. Yielding. "The envoy conducts a scent verification to confirm biological lineage. They observe the heir for seven days to assess... I don't know, bloodline markers, I think. Then they activate the sovereignty transfer if everything checks."

"And if the heir doesn't pass?"

"The territory reverts to Council holding." I looked up at him, letting worry show. "That's why I was hoping to wait until Kinslee's older. I know the Lycan bloodlines can be... particular."

He was thinking. I felt it through the bond—wheels turning, strategies forming.

"What about a proxy?" he asked. "If Kinslee's too young, could we use another child? Temporarily?"

I frowned. "I... I don't know. Maybe? The clause just says 'biological heir.' It doesn't specify..."

I trailed off, watching him. Watching the idea take root.

"The Omega servant's pup," he said slowly. "Novalee. She's young, manageable. We could present her as a... stand-in. Just for the observation period."

I let my eyes widen slightly. "Would that work?"

"It might." His hand was still on my wrist. "You said seven days?"

"Seven days under my direct guardianship. That's what the documentation specifies."

His thumb traced my pulse point. Through the bond, I felt his satisfaction—cold, certain, already counting the acres as his.

"Get the paperwork ready," he said. "I'll arrange the Council envoy request."

"Dexter, are you sure—"

"I'm sure." He released my wrist and turned away, already dismissing me. "Three hundred acres, Lillian. We're not letting that go because of some archaic formality."

I stood there for three full seconds after he left the room.

Then I walked to the bathroom, closed the door, and pressed my hands flat against the marble sink.

My reflection stared back—Luna-braided hair, soft blue dress, the mate mark on my neck that had gone cold seven days ago and never warmed again.

Behind my ribs, my wolf stirred. Not howling this time. Watching.

Waiting.

I smiled at my reflection.

The trap was set.
