My Mate Gave My Luna Seat to His Mistress
Chapter 3
The pack dinner was announced three days in advance. Formal. All senior warriors required to attend. I received the notification the same way everyone else did—through the general pack channel, not a private word from my mate.
I dressed carefully that evening. Luna attire. The deep blue gown that marked my position, the Ashford crest embroidered at the collar. My wolf was quiet inside me, but not still. She was watching. Waiting.
The dining hall was already full when I arrived. Long tables arranged in a horseshoe, the head table elevated on a low platform. Jaxton stood at the center, his Alpha aura filling the space like smoke. He was speaking with Beta Marcus, gesturing toward something on the table.
Alexis was beside him. At his right.
I stopped in the doorway. The Luna's position. The seat reserved by pack law and Moon Goddess tradition for the Alpha's mate. She was wearing civilian clothes, not warrior leathers, and her hair was down. Soft. Feminine. Deliberate.
She saw me and smiled. Warm. Welcoming. Like she was greeting a guest.
I walked forward. My footsteps were the only sound. Conversations died as I passed. Warriors shifted in their seats. I felt their eyes tracking me, felt the discomfort radiating off some of them like heat.
Jaxton looked up. His expression didn't change. No surprise. No acknowledgment of what was wrong with this picture.
"Rose," he said evenly. "Your seat is there." He gestured to his left.
Not beside him. Three chairs down. Separated by empty seats that were quickly filled by senior warriors as I approached—Marcus, then Gamma Thorne, then Delta Commander Reeves. A wall of ranked males between me and my mate.
I looked at the seat. Then at Alexis, still standing at Jaxton's right, her hand resting lightly on the back of the Luna's chair.
Every wolf in the hall was watching now.
I could challenge this. I could invoke Luna authority, cite pack law, demand my rightful position. I could make Jaxton choose—publicly—between his mate and his pack sister.
But I knew how that would end. I'd seen it at Silverpeak. Heard the Alpha tone, felt the weight of his dominance used like a weapon. If I objected now, he would frame it as Luna dramatics. Jealousy. Insecurity. And every wolf here would hear him do it.
So I took the seat he'd assigned me.
The warriors between us settled into their chairs. Alexis sat down at Jaxton's right, smoothing her skirt. She said something to him, too quiet for me to hear. He laughed.
Dinner was served. Roasted venison, winter vegetables, bread still warm from the ovens. The kind of meal meant to celebrate pack unity. Pack strength.
I ate in silence. Around me, conversations resumed—cautious at first, then louder as the wine flowed. I watched the dynamics. Which wolves looked uncomfortable. Which avoided my eyes entirely. Which glanced at Alexis with the deference they should have been directing at me.
Beta Marcus kept his gaze on his plate. He'd been at my mating ceremony three years ago, had sworn loyalty to me as Luna. Now he sat between me and my mate like a barrier.
Gamma Thorne's wife, seated at a lower table, stared at Alexis with open confusion. She leaned toward the she-wolf beside her and whispered something. Both of them looked at me. Then away.
Delta Commander Reeves drank heavily and said nothing.
At the head of the table, Jaxton and Alexis spoke in low tones. His hand rested on the table between them, close enough to hers that their fingers almost touched. Almost. Not quite. Just close enough to make the point.
I noted every detail. The angle of his body, turned slightly toward her. The way she laughed at something he said, easy and unguarded. The way he refilled her wine glass before his own.
My wolf stirred. Not restless. Awake.
When the meal ended, Jaxton stood and raised his glass. The hall went quiet.
"To Black Moon," he said. His voice carried the natural command of an Alpha. "To our strength. Our unity. Our future."
"To Black Moon," the warriors echoed.
He drank. Alexis drank beside him, smiling.
I raised my glass with everyone else. The wine tasted like nothing.
After dinner, wolves lingered in small groups. I moved through them, performing my Luna duties—asking after families, acknowledging new warrior promotions, maintaining the facade. Several she-wolves approached me with careful sympathy in their eyes. They didn't say anything directly. They didn't have to.
I found Jaxton near the hall's entrance, speaking with a group of senior warriors. Alexis was gone—probably to her quarters. I waited until the warriors dispersed, then stepped close enough that we wouldn't be overheard.
"We need to talk," I said quietly.
He sighed. Like I was exhausting him. "About?"
"About tonight. About the seating arrangement."
"The seating was fine, Rose." He checked his phone, not looking at me. "You're making something out of nothing."
"I was displaced from the Luna's seat." I kept my voice level. Calm. "In front of the entire pack."
Now he looked at me. His expression was patient. Too patient. "Alexis sat there because she helped coordinate the dinner. It was a courtesy. You're reading into things that aren't there."
"Every wolf in that hall saw—"
"Every wolf in that hall saw their Luna acting insecure." His tone hardened. "If you have a problem with how I run my pack, we can discuss it privately. Not here."
My pack. Not our pack. His.
I felt the familiar weight beginning to press down—not quite Alpha tone yet, but the warning that came before it. The reminder of who held the power.
I took a breath. Let it out slowly. "Fine," I said. "Privately."
He nodded, already turning away. "Good. I have border reports to review. We'll talk later."
Later. Always later.
I walked back to our quarters alone. The halls were empty, most wolves still gathered in the common areas. I locked the door behind me and stood in the darkness for a long moment.
Then I pulled out my phone and opened the private channel I maintained with Sienna—my younger cousin, still stationed within Black Moon as an Ashford-born warrior. She'd been at the dinner tonight. Seated at a lower table, but watching everything.
I typed carefully.
I need surveillance footage. Border patrol recordings. Specific dates and times. Can you access the security archives without raising flags?
Her response came within minutes.
Yes. What am I looking for?
I gave her the dates. The timestamps I'd noted from weeks of careful observation. The pattern of Alexis's off-hour visits to the healer's den, the nights when Jaxton had personally escorted her there during hours reserved for emergencies only.
Healer scheduling records too, I added. Certified copies. Anything that shows who was treated and when.
A longer pause this time. Then:
I'll have it within three days. Roselyn... what's happening?
I stared at the message. My wolf was no longer quiet. She was awake. And she was ready.
Justice, I typed back. That's what's happening.
I deleted the conversation thread and set the phone down. Tomorrow I would resume my Luna duties. I would smile. I would attend meetings. I would pretend nothing had changed.
But in three days, I would have proof.
And then I would choose my battlefield.
