Chapter 4

The sign above the door said THE MIDNIGHT VEIL in faded gold script. I stood across the street for a long time before I went in.

It was the smell that decided me. Old wood, whiskey, cigarette smoke soaked into velvet — no gardenia, no wolfsbane, no pack. Just human things layered on top of human things.

*Go,* Seraphine said. *This one.*

Inside, a woman in her fifties was stacking chairs. Short grey hair. Reading glasses on a chain. She looked up when I came through the door and did not smile.

"We're not open till seven."

"I heard you were down a cellist."

She stopped stacking. Looked me over — the black clothes, the case at my side, the thinness of my wrists. "You heard right. You any good?"

"Let me play."

She pointed at the small stage in the corner. "Chair's there. Impress me or don't waste my evening."

I sat down. I set the cello — a battered rental I'd found in a pawn shop off 8th — between my knees. I closed my eyes.

I played the piece Patrick used to hum while he worked double shifts. The one he never knew I'd learned by ear from behind the infirmary door.

When I opened my eyes she was standing very still in the middle of the room with a chair still in her hands.

"Della," she said. "You start tonight. Nine to midnight. Cash after last set. What's your name?"

"Madeline."

"Madeline what."

I thought about it. "Just Madeline."

She nodded once, like she'd heard that answer a thousand times in this room and never asked twice. "Just Madeline it is."

I played every night that week. Nine to midnight. Three sets. Della paid me in twenties out of a tin box behind the bar and never asked where I slept or why I flinched when the door opened.

The stage became something I did not have language for. A pressure valve. A confessional. Every morning Patrick died again in the space behind my ribs and every night I put the bow to the strings and let it come out through the wood.

Seraphine did not like the stillness at first.

*Move,* she said during the first slow passage of my second night. *Why are we sitting. Why are we quiet.*

*This is how it comes out,* I told her. *Watch.*

I drew the bow across the C string. Low, long, a note like something dragged up from underwater.

She went silent inside me. Listening.

By the third night she was howling with me — inside, where no one could hear, a long thin note underneath every grief passage that matched the cello's low register almost exactly. She was still furious. She was still grieving. But she was doing it with me now, threading her voice through mine, and when the last note faded and the small human crowd clapped politely and went back to their drinks, she pressed her forehead against the inside of my ribs and stayed quiet until the next song.

I pressed my thumb to the inside of my wrist between sets. Counted my pulse. Slow. Steady. Mine.

On the ninth night, the door opened during my second set and I did not need to look up to know.

The smell reached me first — gardenia. Cold, chemical, wrong. And underneath it something worse: the specific hollow signature of a mate bond that had been severed and left to rot.

Seraphine went rigid inside my chest.

*Him.*

*I know.*

*And her.*

*I know.*

I did not lift my head. I did not stop playing. My bow moved through the passage I was in — a slow one, thank the goddess, a slow one where I could hide the fact that my hands wanted to shake and would not be allowed to.

I let my eyes rise once, over the top of the fingerboard.

Elijah had stopped three steps inside the door. Whatever he had walked in prepared to do, the sound of the cello had frozen him mid-step. His mouth was slightly open. He was staring at me the way a man stares at something he has never seen before, and I understood in one clean second that he had not known I played. Three years of marriage. Three years of my hands. He had never once asked.

The hollow space in his chest — I could feel it across the room, through the ruined thread of what used to be a bond — pulsed once, hard, at the sound of the music.

He did not know what to do with that. I could see him not knowing.

Thea was at his elbow in a soft grey coat. She was not looking at Elijah. She was looking at me — cold, precise, cataloging. I watched her eyes move: my posture, my clean neckline where the mark used to sit, my hands, the absence of gardenia in the air around me. I watched her mouth tighten by one millimeter and then smooth itself again.

She was afraid.

I let my eyes drop back to the strings. I finished the passage. I began the next one — a colder one, a harder one, one Patrick had never heard.

Seraphine settled her weight against the inside of my ribs and bared her teeth in the dark.

*Let them stay,* she said. *Let them hear all of it.*

I played.
