Chapter 2

The Harvest Moon Banquet hall was a cathedral of light and power. Chandeliers hung like frozen constellations. Three hundred wolves in formal dress filled the long tables, their voices a low hum of anticipation. The air smelled of roasted venison, pine boughs, and the layered scents of a pack gathered to celebrate itself.

I took my seat at the high table beside Elder Luna Veronica. She was unusually still tonight. Her hands rested flat on the white tablecloth, and her coat pocket carried a visible rectangular weight — something she kept touching with her thumb, once, twice, like a woman checking that a weapon was still loaded.

Across the hall, near the ceremonial entrance, Lycan Prince Cooper Ashford stood in formal attendance. His posture was neutral. His expression gave nothing away. But I had seen him arrive with a file tucked inside his jacket — slim, official, the kind that carried jurisdiction.

Zachary presided from the dais like a king. His ceremonial coat was midnight blue, his Alpha aura rolling through the hall in waves that made the younger wolves straighten in their seats without knowing why. He began his address. His voice was flawless. Every word landed with the practiced authority of a man who had spent twenty years making rooms agree with him.

I watched him perform.

I felt nothing through the mate bond except the echo of my own closed door.

My wolf stirred. Muted still. Restless. Aware. I pressed one hand briefly to the scars beneath the silver fabric of my gown without meaning to. The hall blurred slightly at the edges. I blinked it back into focus.

Zachary was midway through the ceremonial toast when the doors crashed open.

Giana Rice stormed the dais.

She was dressed in red — a dress cut too low, too high, designed to be seen from the back of a crowded room. In her raised hand, an ultrasound image. Her magnolia scent flooded the hall in a wave so thick it hit every wolf simultaneously. Sweet. Expensive. Unmistakable.

The room erupted.

Three hundred voices fractured into a roar — shock, outrage, confusion, all of it crashing together like a wave breaking against stone. Wolves half-rose from their seats. The younger ones looked to their Alphas. The Alphas looked to Zachary.

Zachary's face drained of color.

Giana stopped three feet from the dais, ultrasound held high, her eyes locked on mine.

"I am carrying the heir to Silverfang," she said. Her voice was loud, clear, calibrated for maximum penetration. "And I demand recognition as this pack's chosen Luna."

The hall went silent.

Not the silence of respect. The silence of a held breath before a scream.

I did not move. I kept my hands folded on the table. I kept my face still. Inside, my wolf made that sound again — the strangled note of a woman trying to speak through a hand over her mouth.

Zachary stepped forward. His aura flared, instinctive, trying to command the room back under control. It didn't work. Giana was rogue-bred. She had no pack bond to suppress. She smiled.

"Speak the words," she said quietly. Quietly enough that only the high table heard. "Or I tell them everything."

Zachary looked at her. Then at the crowd. Then, finally, at me.

I met his eyes.

Twenty years. The scars on my ribs. The vials in his drawer. The tea I had drunk every night because I trusted him. The wolf he caged because he was afraid of what I could become.

I did not beg. I did not plead. I simply looked at him and waited.

He made his choice.

Zachary turned to face the hall. He drew a breath. And in the silence of three hundred witnesses, he spoke the formal rejection vow.

"I, Zachary Willis, Alpha of Silverfang, reject you, Sadie Collins, as my mate and Luna."

The words landed like a physical blow.

The mark on my neck — his teeth, twenty years old, the proof of a bond I had bled to protect — went ice-cold. Then hollow. Then it began to burn.

Pain detonated through my chest. Not the sharp crack of a broken bone. The deep, tearing agony of something ripped out at the root. The mate bond — biological, sacred, Moon Goddess-ordained — shredded in a single breath.

I staggered.

My hand hit the edge of the table. My vision whited out. Somewhere far away, Giana was smiling. Zachary was turning away. Veronica's hand was reaching for mine.

And inside me, in the place where my wolf had been caged for twenty years, something cracked open.

Not slowly. Not gently.

Like a dam breaking.

My bones began to shift.
