Chapter 4

The inter-pack coordination meeting was held in neutral territory — a conference hall that belonged to no one, which meant it belonged to everyone who had enough power to claim a seat at the table.

Six regional Alphas attended. Zander sat three chairs down from me. Flynn was across the table, his expression unreadable.

The meeting itself was routine. Border patrol coordination. Trade route disputes. The kind of administrative business that kept the region stable and the Alphas from each other's throats.

I contributed where expected. Offered Silverfang's perspective on a contested boundary line. Deferred to the senior Alpha on a logistics question. Played my role.

Then Adrian Cole stood.

Flynn's Beta was a quiet man. Pragmatic. Not given to unnecessary speeches. When he rose, the room went silent.

"Nighthollow Pack has successfully absorbed the northern buffer zone," Adrian said. His voice was steady, formal. "The territory has been secured and integrated into our patrol rotations as of this morning."

A murmur went through the room. The northern buffer zone had been abandoned for years — considered too exposed to defend, too resource-intensive to maintain. No one had bothered with it.

Until now.

"This expansion," Adrian continued, "was made possible through an exceptional strategic alliance. Nighthollow is grateful for the support that made this victory achievable."

He didn't name me. He didn't have to.

Every Alpha in that room understood political language. 'Exceptional strategic alliance' meant resources. Territory access. The kind of backing that transformed a minor pack into a legitimate power contender overnight.

I kept my expression neutral. Interested but not invested.

Zander went very still.

I didn't look at him directly. I didn't need to. I could feel the shift in his aura from three chairs away. The sudden tension. The realization settling into him like cold water.

Adrian sat down. The meeting continued.

But the room had changed. The other Alphas were looking at Flynn differently now. Assessing. Recalculating. Nighthollow wasn't a minor player anymore.

And they were wondering who had made that possible.

---

Zander called me that evening.

I was in my father's study reviewing supply manifests when my phone rang. His name appeared on the screen. I let it ring twice before answering.

"Valerie." His voice was warm. Easy. But I could hear the tightness beneath it. "How are you?"

"Fine," I said. "Busy week. You?"

"Same." A pause. Then, carefully: "That was interesting news about Nighthollow today."

"It was," I agreed. "Flynn's done well with that territory. It was smart to move on it."

Another pause. Longer this time.

"I've been thinking," Zander said. His tone had shifted. More deliberate now. "Silverfang has a lot of external engagements right now. Joint training exercises. Territory corridor agreements. Resource allocations."

"We do," I said neutrally.

"Maybe it would be good to limit those for the next quarter. Focus internally. Make sure Silverfang's core territory is fully stabilized before extending outward."

I went very still.

He was asking me to cut off Flynn. Not directly. Not in words that could be quoted. But the meaning was clear.

"That's thoughtful," I said softly. "You're right. Silverfang should always prioritize internal stability."

I could hear the relief in his exhale. "I knew you'd understand."

"Of course," I said. "We're partners."

"Exactly." The warmth was back in his voice now. Confident again. "I'll let you get back to work. Love you."

"You too," I said.

I ended the call and stared at the phone for a long moment.

Then I opened my laptop and pulled up the supply chain allocations Daniel had prepared for next month.

I redirected another shipment to Nighthollow. Medical supplies this time. Enough to stock their healer's clinic for six months.

I sent the approval to Daniel with a single line: Execute immediately.

Then I closed the laptop and pressed two fingers to the inside of my wrist.

My pulse was steady.

---

Zander arrived at Silverfang three days later.

He didn't call ahead. He just appeared at the pack house door mid-morning, that easy smile on his face.

"Surprise," he said when I met him in the foyer.

I smiled back. "This is unexpected."

"I wanted to see you." He stepped inside, his hand finding the small of my back. Familiar. Possessive. "I've been thinking about us."

"Oh?" I led him to the sitting room. We sat on the same sofa where Rebecca had poured tea and offered her observations.

Zander leaned forward, his expression serious now. Open. "I think we've waited long enough, Valerie."

My wolf went absolutely still.

"For what?" I asked quietly.

"The Luna marking ceremony." His hand reached for mine. "I want to set a date. I've been thinking about it a lot lately, and I realized — we shouldn't wait anymore. You've been so patient. So understanding. But you deserve to be marked. You deserve to be my Luna officially."

For the first time in five years, he was the one initiating this conversation.

I looked at him carefully. His scent was anxious beneath the performance. His aura was tight. Controlled.

Nighthollow's rise had frightened him.

He was trying to lock the bond down before he lost leverage.

I let warmth flood my expression. Let my eyes soften. "Zander. I would love nothing more."

Relief washed over his face. "Really?"

"Of course." I squeezed his hand. "When were you thinking?"

He smiled. Then his free hand came up and touched the back of his neck. Just briefly. "I'll have my Beta send over some date options. We can coordinate with both packs. Make it something really special."

"That sounds perfect," I said softly.

He stayed for lunch. We talked about the ceremony. He described the kind of celebration he envisioned. He asked about my preferences for the ritual format.

I answered every question. I smiled. I poured him water.

He left within three hours.

I stood at the window of my father's study and watched his car disappear down the drive.

Then I walked to my desk and opened the locked case.

I didn't add anything new. I just looked at the files stacked inside. The intercepted mind-link transcripts. The financial records. The false patrol reports.

The evidence was complete.

I just needed a stage.

I closed the case and locked it.

Zander never sent those date options.

I knew he wouldn't.
