Chapter 5

Jaden's office smelled like cedar and old paper and the particular cold that settles into a room where decisions have already been made before you walk in.

He was standing at the window when I arrived. Not sitting behind the desk — standing, with his hands clasped behind his back and his eyes on the tree line, the posture of a man who wanted to be seen as someone composing himself rather than someone who had already decided what this conversation would be.

I stood in the doorway until he turned.

'Close the door,' he said.

I closed it.

He didn't offer me a chair. I didn't take one anyway. I stood near the edge of the desk with my hands loose at my sides and waited, and the mate bond pulled at me the way it always did in a room with him — quiet, insistent, cedar and rain curling at the edges of my awareness like smoke I couldn't quite clear.

I had learned to breathe past it. I was breathing past it now.

'The banquet is tomorrow night,' Jaden said. His voice was the declarative kind — not cruel, not warm. The voice of a man who had already resolved that this was a management problem and was now managing it. 'You will be there. You will conduct yourself as Luna of this pack.'

I said nothing.

'You will not bring documentation to any pack member. You will not make allegations. You will not —' a pause, a fractional tightening of his jaw — 'embarrass this family in front of the Silvercrest allies who will be present.'

I looked at him steadily. 'Is that all?'

The question seemed to land somewhere he hadn't prepared for. He turned slightly toward me. 'This pack is watching how you carry yourself in this recovery. The bloodline depends on—'

'The bloodline,' I said.

He stopped.

Not because I had raised my voice. I hadn't. I said it the way you say a word when you've finally heard it clearly for the first time, turned it over, found what it weighs. Two words carrying three years of the pack's contempt and every night I had pressed my hand against my stomach and whispered *hold on*.

Jaden's expression shifted — something moved through it, quick and complicated, and for a moment I thought I saw the ghost of the man who had placed a ribbon-tied box on a desk in our second month as mates and stood there wanting me to like what he'd chosen.

Then it closed again. The Alpha face settled back over whatever had briefly surfaced.

'Consider the pack's best interests,' he said. Flat. Final.

I looked at him for one more moment. Cedar and rain. The mate bond, pulling at the underside of every breath.

'Of course,' I said.

I turned and walked out and pulled the door shut behind me without a sound.

In the corridor, I pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist — the old anchor, the three-year habit — and held it for exactly two seconds.

Then I let go.

Deliberately. Completely.

I didn't reach for it again.

---

Riley was already in her room when I arrived. She had the encrypted drive out and two scent-masked envelopes on the mattress, and she looked up when I came in and read my face in the way she always did — quick, precise, a tracker reading the landscape before she moved through it.

'How bad?' she asked.

'He didn't mention the pup,' I said. 'Not once.'

She was quiet for a moment. Then she picked up the first envelope. 'Then we're sending tonight.'

We worked at the desk by her window, away from the pipes, speaking in the low register we had developed over two weeks of this — efficient, specific, no words wasted. I had written the Lycan Council complaint myself, over four nights, in the careful formal language that Serena Voss had walked me through in a series of brief, encrypted exchanges that Riley had set up through her outside contact. Every claim documented. Every date sourced. Every forged record cross-referenced against the original. Maeve, Luna of the Silvercrest Pack, filing formal charges of pup-murder under Lycan Code Section 7, subsection 3, with attached evidence compiled under seal.

I had signed it with my full Luna title. If they were going to strip that from me tomorrow night, I was going to use it one more time for something that mattered.

The Dorian Chase package was different — denser, structured for public impact rather than legal precision, built to land like a detonation across the inter-pack network the moment his team released it. Purchase logs. Prescription charts. The falsified report beside the original. The delivery timestamps. The parallel account. Every piece Riley and I had assembled over fourteen nights against the noise of the wall pipes, organized now into something airtight and irrefutable.

Riley sealed both packages with scent-masking compound she pressed carefully around the edges with her thumb. I watched her work. Her hands were steady.

'The boundary drop?' I asked.

'East marker. There's a pocket in the stone wall at the old Garren boundary, about twenty feet past the last Silvercrest patrol rotation. Both recipients know the retrieval protocol.' She pressed the last seal flat. 'Neither package goes through Silvercrest channels. Nothing traceable back to the pack house.'

'And if someone picks up your scent on the way?'

She gave me a look. 'I've been masking my trail since I was twelve. Estella would have to be standing at the boundary in the dark with a flashlight.'

I almost smiled. Almost.

She lifted both envelopes and looked at me across the mattress. Something passed between us that didn't need words — the recognition of what this was, what it cost, what it started. The point past which nothing would go back to what it had been.

Riley tucked the packages under her jacket and left through the east corridor. I sat on the edge of her bed and listened to the pipes and waited.

It was twenty-three minutes.

She came back through the door without the packages, crossed the room, and sat down beside me.

'Done,' she said.

I exhaled.

---

The confirmation came the next morning, through the covert channel Serena had established — a brief, coded message that arrived on the secondary device before I had finished my coffee.

I read it twice.

The Lycan Council's enforcement division had formally acknowledged receipt of my complaint. Investigation opened. Case number assigned. A councilor's seal on the acknowledgment — not a junior clerk's rubber stamp, but a senior enforcement seal, the kind that meant someone with real authority had already looked at what I sent and decided it warranted attention.

I set the phone down on the windowsill.

Dorian Chase's confirmation came eleven minutes later. Single line. *Package received. Publication prepared. Standing by for your signal or proceeding on editorial discretion within 48 hours.*

I typed back two words: *Your discretion.*

I put the phone away.

Outside the window, the Silvercrest Pack house grounds were ordinary — morning light on the grass, a pair of Deltas crossing toward the training yard, the distant bark of something that might have been Barnaby chasing something only he could smell. The world still wearing its usual face.

By tomorrow night it would look entirely different.

Sable went very still inside me. Not afraid. Not eager. The specific, held stillness that Riley had once described, a year into our friendship, in a way I hadn't fully understood at the time: *You go quiet like something that's already landed, she'd said. Like the decision's done and your body's just catching up.*

She was right. The decision was done.

I stood at the window for one more moment, and I thought about the banquet — the seating Vivienne would have arranged, the witnesses she would have positioned, the removal that was supposed to look like a departure.

Then I went to the closet and began choosing what to wear.

They wanted me there. I would be there.

They had planned an ending. I had planned something else entirely.
