Chapter 3

I am an Omega with no father, raised by my mother, Isla, alone.

Besides my mother, I had no friends. My mother, Isla, had no family left either.

When Caleb found out I was his mate, his parents, Alpha Gideon and Luna Eleonora, were dismissive of my bloodline.

But Caleb chose me firmly, making me believe our mate bond could overcome anything.

I felt a love I had never known, but that spark faded over time.

That night, Caleb stayed with me, and I didn’t refuse. The lingering scent of Sloane’s wild roses on him, however, made me nauseous.

The next morning, he was in a good mood. He woke and kissed my forehead.

“The two most important women in my life can finally get along. I’m so grateful, Lyra. I promise I’ll make this up to you.”

After breakfast, he returned my phone and allowed me to walk outside the estate, escorted by Stonecrest warriors.

The first thing I did was call my mother.

Caleb didn’t know that my mother had found her second-chance mate this year.

My mother and I were no longer alone, and with her help, I would soon leave this place.

In the following months, I tried to coexist peacefully with Sloane.

She had Caleb hire a private nutritionist and a fitness trainer for her. I had nothing, and I didn’t even feel provoked by her flaunting.

But even with experts caring for her, by her eighth month, Sloane experienced an abnormal fetal position.

The infirmary doctor said she needed to go to the Redwood Regional Medical Center for Shifters for proper care, or it could be dangerous.

Caleb immediately packed his bags to take Sloane.

I curled up in a corner of my room, my hands on my swollen belly, feeling an unprecedented weakness.

“You shouldn’t keep pretending to be strong,” my wolf Selene’s voice was low. “Our mate bond is breaking. If he leaves with her, we might not survive.”

“No, we will! We have to endure this alone.”

Before he left, Caleb glanced at me, his face filled with exhaustion, but also a flicker of warmth.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

I refused to show any weakness, so I didn’t answer.

“Lyra, I’ll be back before our child is born. Sloane’s situation is urgent. When I return, I’ll be with you twenty-four-seven.”

I wanted to stand and tell him that I needed him too, that our baby and I needed him. But my pride won, so I forced a smile and nodded.

Caleb stared at me, surprised. He probably hadn’t expected me to let him go so easily.

He didn’t move until Sloane called his name. He slowly tore his gaze from me.

But as he was about to step out, he suddenly rushed back, holding me tightly in his arms, his tone frantic.

“Forget it! I’m not going! I’ll have my Beta go with her. I’m staying here to take care of you.”

My heart skipped. I felt loved again, but I quickly shook off the feeling.

“You should go with Sloane. If anything happens to her child, you’ll feel guilty for the rest of your life,” I whispered.

What I really meant was, If anything happens to her child, you will blame me for the rest of your life.

Caleb slowly loosened his grip and walked away toward Sloane.

Just as Caleb was about to get in the car, a maid called out.

“Sir, please let Miss Lyra move back to her original room. The servant’s quarters are too damp; it’s not good for the baby.”

Before Caleb could answer, Sloane said, “That won’t do! I’ll be back soon. How can she take my room?”

“I don’t want to move back,” I told Caleb. His face instantly lit up with a warm smile.

“I’ll buy you a new house when I return. I’m sorry you have to suffer for a few more days.”

With that, he got in the car and drove away with Sloane.
