Chapter 4

The encrypted update from Cora came in at seven-forty-three in the morning, while I was on my second cup of coffee and Barnaby was doing his best impression of a throw rug across my feet.

I read it twice. Then I opened the portfolio spreadsheet and pulled up the territorial debt map.

Three contracts. The Millbrook grazing rights, the eastern creek access agreement, and a small but strategically placed road easement that cut through the middle of Ironvale's supply corridor. All three acquired through shell alliances over the past six weeks. Clean, quiet, untraceable back to Nighthollow unless you knew exactly what you were looking for — and Emmett's advisors were not looking.

Cora's note at the bottom was characteristically brief: *Two more flagged. Your call.*

I scrolled to the flagged contracts. The first was a mineral extraction agreement on Ironvale's southern ridge — modest value on its own, but it sat adjacent to the dormant timber lease I'd already identified. Together, they formed a corridor. The second was a water rights contract that Ironvale's council had been quietly delinquent on for eight months. One missed payment away from default.

I marked both for acquisition.

Then I sat back and looked at the map for a moment. The shell alliances were arranged like a net — not tightening yet, just positioned. Patient. Ironvale didn't know it was already inside the perimeter. Emmett was busy managing Daisy's pregnancy announcement and fielding calls from his legal team about Section 12.4, and the idea that his soon-to-be-rejected Luna was quietly building the infrastructure to absorb his pack's financial skeleton had simply never occurred to him.

It wouldn't. That was the thing about men like Emmett. They looked at a woman who cooked their meals and waited by their doors and assumed the only thing happening behind her eyes was waiting.

Barnaby shifted against my feet, exhaled a long, contented sigh, and went back to sleep.

"Good morning to you too," I said.

I sent Cora the confirmation and closed the laptop.

---

Eleanor called at ten.

She wanted to arrange a pack run. Just Emmett and me, she said — a tradition revival, she called it, as though we'd ever had a tradition to revive. Her voice had that particular brightness she deployed when she was most determined, the kind that didn't leave room for a polite no.

"It'll be good for both of you," she said. "Fresh air. The woods. No lawyers, no paperwork. Just the bond."

I looked at Barnaby. He looked back at me.

"What time?" I said.

She sounded so relieved I almost felt bad. Almost.

---

Emmett was already at the tree line when I arrived. He had his arms crossed and his eyes on the woods, the posture of a man who had agreed to something he considered beneath him and was making sure everyone knew it. He glanced at me once when I walked up. Didn't say anything.

We shifted.

I kept my aura suppressed — the same careful compression I'd been maintaining for three years, the habit so ingrained now it was almost automatic. My wolf moved through the shift quietly, her scent dulled, her presence small. Nothing that would draw attention. Nothing that would make anyone look twice.

Emmett's wolf didn't wait. He was gone before I'd fully settled into the shift, a dark shape disappearing between the trees at a pace that made the message clear: this was not a run together. This was two wolves who happened to be in the same woods.

Fine.

I ran alone.

The Ironvale woods were beautiful in December. I'd give them that. The cold had stripped the undergrowth bare and the light came through the trees in long, pale columns, and the ground was frozen hard enough that my paws barely left prints. My wolf moved through it without urgency, without grief, without any of the howling anguish that the romance novels would have you believe a neglected mate should feel on a run like this.

What I felt was quieter than that. More like the particular stillness of a woman who has already made her decision and is simply waiting for the paperwork to catch up.

Forty minutes. I ran the eastern loop, circled back through the creek bed, and returned to the tree line at a pace that suggested I had enjoyed myself moderately and felt nothing in particular about any of it.

Emmett was already back in human form, leaning against a tree with his phone out.

I shifted, pulled on my jacket, and walked past him toward the pack house.

"Avery."

I didn't stop.

"Eleanor's going to ask how it went," he said.

"Tell her it was lovely," I said. "The woods are very nice this time of year."

I heard him exhale behind me. Sharp, frustrated. The sound of a man who had expected something and received nothing, and didn't know what to do with the absence.

When I got home, I opened the betting pool and moved the projected date two weeks earlier.

---

He found me in the corridor that afternoon.

I was coming back from the council records room with a folder of territorial survey copies — the 2013 maps, the ones with the northern ridge notation — and he was coming from the direction of his office, and the corridor was narrow enough that there was no graceful way for either of us to pretend the other wasn't there.

He stopped. I stopped.

For a moment he just looked at me. Then something shifted in his jaw — that particular set that meant he'd decided to use the tone.

When he spoke, the Alpha authority was fully loaded. Deep, resonant, the kind of voice that pressed down on a wolf's instincts like a hand on the back of the neck.

"Withdraw the filing, Avery."

The words landed in the air between us. Around us, the corridor was empty, but I could feel the weight he'd put behind it — the expectation that my wolf would flinch, that my spine would curve, that three years of pack hierarchy would do what three years of neglect hadn't managed to break.

I looked at him.

He was still handsome. I'd always been honest with myself about that. Tall, broad-shouldered, the kind of face that photographs well at pack summits. He was looking at me with the absolute certainty of a man who had never once had this particular tool fail him.

I waited until the silence had stretched just long enough to be uncomfortable.

"Your Alpha tone stopped working on me," I said, "approximately two years and eight months ago."

His expression didn't change. But something behind his eyes did — a flicker, fast and involuntary, like a man who has just stepped on a stair that wasn't there.

"Save it for someone whose wolf still responds to you," I said. "It'll be more efficient for everyone."

I stepped around him and continued down the corridor.

I didn't look back. I didn't need to. I could feel it — the stillness behind me, the particular quality of a man standing in a hallway with his authority in his hands and no idea what to do with it now that it had stopped working.

And underneath that, something else. Something I hadn't expected.

His wolf. Stirring. Confused and unsettled in a way I hadn't felt from him in years — maybe ever. Like something had shifted in the air between us and his wolf had noticed it before his mind caught up.

Too late, I thought. Three years too late.

I tucked the survey folder under my arm and kept walking.
