Chapter 5

The eastern borderlands were burning.

Not literally. But the air tasted like smoke and adrenaline, and the forest floor was churned to mud under the weight of sixty wolves tearing into each other with the kind of violence that left scars on the landscape.

I hit the tree line in full sprint and assessed the field in under three seconds.

Hollowfang had sent their best. Disciplined formation. Coordinated strikes. Johnathan Willis at the center, directing his wolves with the precision of someone who'd won this kind of engagement before. They'd targeted our weakest flank — the northeastern ridge where the terrain narrowed and our defenders couldn't spread out properly.

Smart. Ruthless. Exactly what I would've done.

Our Deltas were holding, but barely. Rowan's squad was pinned against the ridge outcropping, three wolves down, the rest bleeding and snarling as Hollowfang pressed the advantage. I saw Garrison go down hard under a gray-furred attacker twice his size. He rolled, snapped at the wolf's throat, missed.

I didn't hesitate.

I drove into the gap between Rowan's position and the main Hollowfang line, my wolf hitting the ground with enough force to scatter two of their fighters. I went for the gray wolf on Garrison first — teeth in his shoulder, dragging him off, throwing him into the dirt hard enough that he stayed down.

Garrison scrambled to his feet. Blood in his fur. He dipped his head once — acknowledgment, not gratitude — and rejoined the line.

I turned to assess the next target and saw Johnathan.

He was watching me. Not fighting. Just standing at the edge of the melee, his massive rust-colored wolf utterly still, his gaze locked on mine with the kind of focus that meant he'd already made a decision.

He moved.

Fast. Faster than a wolf his size should've been able to move. He cut through the battlefield like he wasn't even part of it, ignoring every Ironclaw wolf that tried to intercept him, his trajectory fixed and absolute.

He was coming for me.

I braced. Claws dug into the mud. My wolf's hackles went up, and I felt the low growl building in my chest — not fear, just the body's automatic response to a predator that had already committed to the kill.

Johnathan hit me like a landslide.

We went down in a tangle of fur and teeth and momentum. He was heavier than I'd anticipated, and he used that weight to pin me against the ridge outcropping, his jaws snapping toward my throat. I twisted hard, felt his teeth scrape across my shoulder instead, and drove my hind legs into his ribs with enough force to break his hold.

He staggered back. I lunged.

But he was already moving again, and this time he didn't go for my throat. He went low. Claws raking across my shoulder in a single brutal strike that tore through fur and muscle and hit bone.

The pain was white-hot and immediate.

I felt my blood hit the forest floor. Felt my wolf stumble. Felt the battlefield tilt slightly as my vision blurred at the edges.

Johnathan circled. He knew he'd landed the critical hit. I could see it in the way he moved — patient now, methodical, waiting for me to weaken enough that the next strike would finish it.

I tried to stand. My left foreleg buckled.

And then the air changed.

It wasn't sound. It wasn't scent. It was pressure — a sudden, vast weight pressing down on the entire battlefield, so heavy and absolute that every wolf on the field froze mid-strike.

I looked up.

Mathias was standing at the edge of the tree line.

Except it wasn't Mathias anymore.

His wolf — the undersized, dull-furred form I'd seen on every pack run for years — was gone. In its place was something massive. Silver-black coat that caught the moonlight and threw it back like polished steel. Shoulders nearly twice the width of any Alpha I'd ever seen. Eyes that glowed faint amber in the darkness, fixed on Johnathan with the kind of focus that made my own wolf go very, very still.

The shift hadn't been gradual. There was no in-between. One moment he was the wolf I knew. The next, he was this.

Johnathan turned. Saw him. And I watched the exact moment his wolf's instincts overrode his tactical brain, because he took a step back without meaning to.

Mathias moved.

He crossed the distance between the tree line and the ridge in three strides, and when he hit Johnathan, the sound was like thunder. Johnathan went airborne — actually airborne — and slammed into the ground ten feet away with enough force to crack bone.

Mathias didn't follow. He planted himself directly over my bleeding body, all four paws in the mud, his massive frame a wall between me and every wolf on the field.

And then he roared.

It wasn't an Alpha's dominance call. It was older. Deeper. The kind of sound that came from a wolf whose bloodline predated the pack system entirely. It rolled across the battlefield like a physical force, and I felt it in my chest, in my bones, in the part of my wolf that recognized hierarchy on an instinctive level.

Every Hollowfang wolf on the field broke.

Not retreated. Broke. They scattered into the forest in a blind panic, abandoning formation, abandoning their war-captain, abandoning the fight entirely.

Johnathan tried to stand. His legs shook. He looked at Mathias — at the silver-black wolf standing over me with blood on his claws and moonlight in his fur — and something in his eyes went flat.

He turned and ran.

The battlefield went silent.

Mathias stood over me, utterly still, his breathing even and controlled. I could feel the heat radiating off him. Could smell the amber-and-thunderstorm scent that was wholly his, now layered with something sharper, something that tasted like ozone and old power.

He lowered his head. His muzzle brushed against my injured shoulder — gentle, careful, the kind of touch that shouldn't have been possible from a wolf that size.

And then he shifted.

The change was instant. One moment, the massive silver-black wolf. The next, Mathias in human form, kneeling in the mud beside me, his hands already moving to assess the wound on my shoulder.

"Don't shift yet," he said quietly. His voice was steady. Calm. Like he hadn't just torn through a battlefield and roared loud enough to shatter a war-captain's nerve. "The wound's deep. Shifting will make it worse."

I met his eyes. Amber. Glowing faint in the darkness. Still carrying that old, vast pressure that made my wolf want to bare her throat.

He held my gaze for a moment. Then his hand moved to the back of my neck — not restraining, just there, warm and steady.

"I've got you," he said.

And across the battlefield, in the silence that followed the retreat, I heard Rowan's voice through the mind-link, shaken and raw.

*What the hell was that?*
