Chapter 3

I left Ironveil at four in the morning.

The border patrol changed shifts at five. I had exactly sixty minutes.

I moved through the forest in human form, keeping low, avoiding the main paths. My heart hammered against my ribs. Every snapped twig sounded like a gunshot. Every rustle of leaves made me freeze.

Seraphine was silent. She'd been silent for days now. I pressed my hand to my chest and felt nothing—no warmth, no presence. Just an empty space where my wolf used to be.

The Crescent Moon healer ward sat at the edge of their territory, a low stone building surrounded by herb gardens. I slipped through the side entrance and found my mother's room at the end of the hall.

She was asleep. Her face was pale, her breathing shallow. I pulled a chair beside her bed and took her hand.

It was cold.

"Mom," I whispered.

Her eyes opened slowly. It took her a moment to focus. When she recognized me, something like relief crossed her face. Then fear.

"Ariana. You shouldn't—"

"I know." I squeezed her hand gently. "But I'm here now."

I worked through the night. I'd smuggled herbs from my quarters—hidden in the lining of my cloak, wrapped in cloth to mask the scent. Feverfew for inflammation. Valerian root for pain. A compound I'd developed years ago for immune support.

I mixed tinctures by candlelight. I monitored her pulse. I adjusted dosages every hour.

By dawn, her color had improved. Her breathing steadied. She squeezed my hand back.

"You have to go," she whispered. "Before they notice."

I kissed her forehead. "I'll come back."

"No." Her grip tightened. "Don't risk it again. Please."

I didn't promise. I just held her hand until the sky started to lighten.

Then I ran.

---

I reached Ironveil's border at four fifty-three. Seven minutes before the patrol change.

I slipped through the tree line and headed straight for my quarters. The pack house was still dark. Silent. I allowed myself one breath of relief.

Then I opened my door and found them waiting.

Archer sat behind my desk. Peyton stood beside him, arms crossed, wearing that same soft, sympathetic smile.

My stomach dropped.

"Luna Ariana," Peyton said quietly. "We need to talk."

I closed the door behind me. My legs felt unsteady. "About what?"

Archer didn't look at me. He was staring at a piece of paper on the desk. A patrol log.

"You left pack territory last night," he said. His voice was flat. Empty. "Without authorization."

My mouth went dry. "I—"

"The border patrol recorded your scent crossing at four-oh-seven a.m." He tapped the log with one finger. "You returned at four fifty-three."

I opened my mouth. No words came out.

Peyton stepped forward. Her expression was concerned. Gentle. "We also have a witness who saw you entering the Crescent Moon healer ward. With a male wolf."

The world tilted.

"That's not—" I forced the words out. "That's not what happened. My mother is sick. I went to—"

"Your mother." Archer's tone didn't change. "Who you didn't inform me about. Who you visited in secret. In the middle of the night."

"Because you wouldn't have let me go!" The words burst out before I could stop them. "You've stripped every function I had. You forbid me from healing. From shifting. From leaving without an escort. What was I supposed to do?"

Silence.

Archer finally looked at me. His eyes were cold. Distant. Like he was looking at a stranger.

"The Protocols exist for a reason," he said.

"The Protocols don't apply to her." I pointed at Peyton. My hand was shaking. "You exempted her from everything. But you use them to—"

"Enough."

The Alpha tone cut through the air like a blade. My throat closed. My wolf—what little remained of her—whimpered and went silent.

Archer stood. "Beta Dorian. Gamma Thorne. Enter."

The door opened. Both men stepped inside. Their faces were carefully blank.

"Witnesses," Archer said simply.

Peyton walked to the shelf where I kept my journals. She pulled down the Luna Protocol scroll—the ancient document that had governed my life for seven years. She held it up, then looked at Archer.

He nodded.

She tore it in half.

The sound echoed in the small room. She tore it again. And again. Pieces of parchment drifted to the floor like snow.

"Luna Ariana Evans," Peyton said softly, "you have no standing left to enforce."

I stared at the shredded scroll. My hands were numb.

"Effective immediately," Archer continued, "you are relieved of all Luna duties. You will be assigned new responsibilities by Peyton. You will comply fully."

Dorian's jaw tightened. He didn't speak.

Thorne stared at the wall.

No one said anything.

Archer walked past me without a glance. Peyton followed. The two men filed out behind them.

The door closed.

I stood alone in my quarters, surrounded by torn parchment.

I knelt slowly and picked up a piece. The ink was faded. I could barely read the words.

Seraphine was silent. Completely, utterly silent.

I pressed the scrap of parchment to my chest and counted my breaths.

One. Two. Three.

---

The new responsibilities started the next morning.

Peyton arrived at my door with a list. Her smile was kind. Patient.

"The supply closets need organizing," she said. "Everything alphabetized. I'll check your work this evening."

I took the list.

She tilted her head. "Are you all right, Ariana? You look tired."

I met her pale blue eyes. They were empty. Completely empty.

"I'm fine," I said.

She nodded and left.

I spent the day in a storage room, sorting bandages and bottles. My hands moved automatically. My mind was somewhere else.

The next day, she had me scrub the healer ward. The place I was forbidden to practice in. I cleaned floors I used to walk as Luna. I organized equipment I was no longer allowed to touch.

Pack members passed by. Some glanced at me. Most didn't.

No one spoke.

Cassia Wren found me on the third day. She was carrying linens, her hands shaking.

"Luna," she whispered. "I'm so sorry."

I shook my head. "Don't call me that."

"You're still—"

"I'm not." I wrung out the cloth in my hands. "Not anymore."

She left without another word.

That night, I sat at my desk and opened my herb journal. I wrote the date at the top of a new page.

Then I wrote: *Luna status revoked. Protocol scroll destroyed. Assigned menial labor. Pack members avert eyes. Seraphine silent.*

I set the pen down and stared at the words.

Outside my window, the training grounds were empty. The moon was rising.

I pressed my palm to my chest and felt nothing.

No warmth. No presence.

Just an empty space where my wolf used to be.
