Chapter 3

Ivory noticed.

I didn't know when. I didn't know how. But three days after Daxton's scent settled into my skin, I felt the shift—the specific quality of being watched from a distance by someone who had spent years learning to read the edges of my life.

She would have traced Keanu's movements. She would have seen the erratic surges in his wolf's aura—not dying faster, but waking. Pulling toward something.

Pulling toward me.

I stood behind the counter, cleaning the same needle twice, and tried not to think about what that meant. Buster sat at my feet, ears pricked toward the door. He'd been restless all morning.

My phone buzzed. Daxton's name lit the screen.

*Everett's moving. Be ready.*

I set the phone down. My hands were steady.

I'd been ready for four years.

---

Everett Kennedy walked into my shop at two in the afternoon.

No appointment. No warning. Just the door chime and the smell of expensive cologne layered over the faint metallic scent of a man who had spent decades standing close to power.

He looked exactly the same. Silver at the temples. Perfectly pressed shirt. The kind of face that inspired trust in people who didn't know better.

Buster growled.

Everett glanced at the dog, then at me. His expression didn't change. "Natalia. You're looking well."

I didn't answer. I set the needle down and waited.

He reached into his jacket—slowly, deliberately, giving me time to see it wasn't a weapon—and pulled out a folded document. He placed it on the counter between us with the careful precision of a man arranging chess pieces.

"A territory-rights pact," he said. His voice was calm. Measured. "Unclaimed land on the eastern border. Two hundred acres. Water access. Protection from rogue raids. Resources to expand your business, if you choose. A quiet life."

I looked at the document. Didn't touch it.

"All yours," Everett continued, "if you leave this territory before the Mate Ceremony. Four days from now."

My gaze lifted to his face. "That's the offer."

"That's the offer."

"And if I don't take it?"

Everett straightened a pen on my counter that had been lying at an angle. He aligned it parallel to the edge of the wood. "Then you stay here. In this shop. In this town. With your dog and your ink and your... memories. And nothing changes."

The threat was so deeply embedded in the phrasing that anyone listening wouldn't have caught it. But I heard it. The subtext was clear: *Take the deal, or we make sure you disappear another way.*

I picked up the pact.

Everett's shoulders relaxed slightly.

I tore it in half.

The sound was sharp. Clean. And as my fingers ripped through the paper, I felt them—claws, extending from my fingertips, longer than the single claw that had appeared days ago. They dragged through the document and scored deep gouges into the wooden counter beneath.

Everett froze.

I stared at my hands. Four claws. Sharp. Curved. Real.

They retracted slowly, disappearing back into my fingertips like they'd never been there. But the gouges in the counter remained. Four parallel lines. Deliberate.

I looked up.

Everett's face was still composed, but his eyes had gone flat. The kind of flat that meant calculations were happening faster than I could track.

I set the torn pieces of the pact on the counter and aligned them, edges touching, the way he'd aligned my pen. My voice was quiet. Steady.

"I'm coming for everything you stole."

Everett didn't move for three seconds. Then he reached out and straightened my appointment book. Adjusted the angle of the torn pact pieces. Centered a glass of water I'd left near the register.

When he spoke, his tone hadn't changed. "You should reconsider."

"I won't."

He studied me. Not the way Keanu had studied me—desperate, searching for something he'd lost. Everett looked at me the way a man looks at a structural problem he's already solved once and is irritated to find still standing.

Then he turned and walked out.

The door chime rang softly behind him.

I stood there, hands flat on the counter, staring at the four claw marks in the wood.

Buster pressed against my leg.

My phone buzzed again. Daxton.

*He left?*

*Yes.*

*You okay?*

I looked at my hands. Turned them over. The skin was smooth. Unmarked. But I could still feel the claws—the weight of them, the sharpness, the way they'd extended without my permission and retracted without my control.

My wolf wasn't silent anymore.

She was waking up.

And she was furious.

I typed back: *I'm fine. He knows I'm not leaving.*

Daxton's response came immediately: *Good. Let him know.*

I set the phone down and pressed my palm flat against the claw marks. They were deep. Permanent.

Everett had spent four years believing I was broken. Branded. Disposable.

He'd just learned otherwise.

And outside, I knew—somewhere in Silverfang, in Everett's private office—he was standing at his desk, straightening objects with hands that were no longer entirely steady, recalculating a plan that had just developed its first structural crack.

I smiled.

It wasn't a kind smile.

Four days until the Mate Ceremony.

Four days until I walked into that hall and made sure every wolf who had watched me branded saw exactly what I'd become.

I pulled out my mother's scent-sealed box from the back room and set it on the counter.

Not yet.

But soon.

The clock was ticking.

And this time, I wasn't the one running out of time.
