Chapter 1

The door chime rang at 4:47 on a Thursday afternoon.

I didn't look up from the stencil I was tracing onto transfer paper. Border-town traffic was thin this time of day—mostly rogues passing through, packless wolves looking for ink to cover scars they didn't want to explain. I'd learned not to lift my head for every customer. Buster would bark if it mattered.

Buster didn't bark.

He growled.

Low. Steady. The kind of growl that meant *threat*, not stranger. I set the stylus down and raised my eyes.

The man in the doorway was tall, broad-shouldered, and frozen mid-step like he'd walked into a wall he couldn't see. His hand was still on the door handle. His chest rose and fell too fast.

I knew him.

Four years hadn't changed the shape of his face or the way he carried his shoulders like the world owed him the space he took up. Alpha Keanu Austin. Silverfang Pack. The man who spoke the rejection vow at our Mate Ceremony altar and used his Alpha tone to force me to my knees before he let his Beta brand me.

My hands went still on the counter.

His wolf howled.

Not metaphorically. The sound tore out of his chest—audible, raw, and so loud Buster's ears flattened. It wasn't a howl of dominance. It was the sound of something dying that refused to go quietly.

His eyes snapped to mine. Gold flickered through the brown. His lips parted.

"Natalia."

My name in his mouth felt like a hand around my throat.

I didn't answer. I looked at him the way I'd look at any customer: neutral, unhurried, waiting for him to state his business or leave. My heartbeat was a drum against my ribs, but my face gave nothing.

His gaze dropped to my collarbone. I wasn't hiding it today—the silver rogue brand sat just above the neckline of my tank top, raised and deliberate. His work. His Beta's hand. His pack's judgment.

He flinched.

Then his eyes tracked lower, catching on the ink that covered my arms, my shoulders, the places where claw-mark scars used to show. He stared like he was trying to solve a puzzle he'd already broken.

"I need—" His voice cracked. He cleared his throat and tried again. "I need an artist. For a cover-up."

I didn't move. "No."

He blinked. "You don't know what I'm asking for."

"I know." I kept my voice flat. "The answer's no. Leave."

He took a step forward.

Buster repositioned. Not aggressive—just there, between me and the door, his three legs planted and his weight low.

Keanu stopped.

"I'll pay double your rate," he said. His hands were shaking. I watched them curl into fists at his sides. "Triple. Name the price."

"There isn't one." I reached under the counter and set a silver-tipped tattooing needle on the surface between us. Not a threat. A boundary. "You need to leave."

His wolf surged again. I felt it before I saw it—the pressure in the air, the crackle of an Alpha aura trying to assert itself and failing. The shop lights flickered. A crack ran through the aura like broken glass.

And my body reacted.

My jaw locked. My spine went rigid. My hands flattened on the counter, fingers spread, nails digging into the wood. Every muscle in my legs tensed against the instinct to drop, to kneel, to submit.

I didn't kneel.

But the effort not to was visible. I knew it was. My breathing went shallow. My vision tunneled at the edges.

Keanu saw it.

The gold drained from his eyes. His wolf collapsed inside him—I heard it, the whimper that came after the howl, the sound of something that had just broken itself worse.

"Natalia—" His voice was barely a whisper. "I didn't mean—"

"Leave." I said it quieter this time. Steadier. My hands were still flat on the counter. "Now."

He stared at me for three more seconds. Then he turned and walked out.

The door chime rang again. Softer.

I stood there, hands on the counter, and counted to sixty.

Buster circled back and pressed his weight against my leg. I didn't move. My heartbeat was still too loud. The phantom sensation of an Alpha tone—*his* Alpha tone—was still crawling under my skin, and I hated that my body remembered it, hated that four years hadn't been enough to erase the reflex.

I picked up the needle. Put it back in the drawer. Locked it.

From the back room, I retrieved a small sealed box I'd kept on the highest shelf for two years. My mother's scent was still trapped inside—lavender and something softer I didn't have a name for. I set it on the counter where I could see it.

Not yet.

But soon.

I pulled out my phone and opened the encrypted rogue channel Daxton's sister had given me eighteen months ago. I typed one message:

*The scar came looking for me. We need to talk.*

I sent it.

Then I pressed my right hand flat against the counter and stared.

My index finger had extended a claw. Just one. Sharp, curved, gone in two seconds.

My wolf hadn't stirred in four years.

I looked at the small gouge the claw had left in the wood. Thin. Deliberate. Real.

I didn't let myself call it hope.

I called it a clock.

And the clock had just started.
