Chapter 3

Cole did not believe me.

Not at first.

He stood in the corridor staring at my face as if grief should have made me less coherent.

"You walked here by yourself," he said. "If you had just lost the baby, David would have you in intensive care."

"I left intensive care."

"That makes no sense."

Emma appeared in the VIP doorway behind him, one hand pressed to her bandage.

"Cole?"

He turned toward her.

"Go back to bed."

"Is everything okay?"

I laughed.

The sound hurt my stitches.

"No. Everything is not okay."

Emma's eyes filled immediately. "Lyra, I never wanted any of this."

"You grabbed my ankle."

"I slipped."

"You looked at me before you pulled."

Cole stepped between us.

"Stop."

"She killed our child."

The word child seemed to disturb Cole more than baby. Good. I wanted him to picture the person we had already begun making room for.

At nineteen weeks, she responded to voices. Finn had discovered that reading his science homework beside my stomach made her kick. Cole had once laughed and said she was already protesting homework. I remembered that laugh now and wondered how he could stand ten feet away acting as if I had invented the loss for leverage.

"She was real," I said. "She had a heartbeat. She had feet I watched on an ultrasound. Stop reducing her to an argument you think I am using."

Finn had moved closer without either of us noticing. His face turned pale.

"Why didn't anyone tell me?" he asked.

David looked at Cole.

Cole had no answer.

Finn's eyes dropped to my abdomen. "Was she alive when Dad went with Aunt Emma?"

The corridor became painfully quiet.

"Yes," David said. "She still had a heartbeat."

Finn began to cry.

Cole turned on the doctor. "He is a child."

"Then stop letting him hear only the version that protects the adults," David replied.

I did not comfort Finn yet. I loved him, but I was barely standing. The habit of spending my last strength to stabilize everyone else had already cost too much.

I looked at Cole. "If you want to know what happened, ask David. Ask the surgical team. Read the timestamps. Do not ask Emma whether my blood was real."

His jaw tightened. "You are making this impossible."

"No. I am making you verify before you accuse. That should have been normal from the beginning."

"A girl?" he whispered.

I looked at him. "Yes. Your sister."

He backed against the wall.

His face hardened.

"Do not use our unborn pup as a weapon because you are angry I prioritized a human head injury."

The sentence made the nurses' station go silent.

David walked out from behind the desk.

"Alpha, you need to stop talking."

Cole ignored him.

"You have been hostile toward Emma for months. Now you are blaming a miscarriage on an accident."

"A miscarriage?"

David's voice turned dangerous.

"She had a complete placental abruption. I performed an emergency fetal delivery because the trauma from that fall caused catastrophic bleeding."

Cole looked at him.

"You said she was stable enough to wait."

"I said the opposite. Repeatedly."

Emma began breathing too fast.

"Cole, please. I can't—"

He moved toward her automatically.

I watched him.

David watched him too.

Cole stopped halfway.

For once, shame caught up with instinct.

"Show me the chart," he said.

I shook my head.

"No."

"Lyra, I have a right to know what happened to my child."

"You had the right to ask before you signed someone else's priority form."

His nostrils flared.

The Alpha aura rolled off him.

Without Astra, the pressure no longer reached a wolf inside me. It still made the air heavy, but it did not bend my mind.

Cole noticed.

His eyes narrowed.

"Why aren't you responding to my command?"

"Because my wolf is dead."

He went still.

Emma whispered, "That's impossible."

David looked at her. "No. It isn't."

Cole reached for me again.

I raised my hand.

"Touch me and I will scream loud enough for every patient on this floor to hear why I lost my wolf."

He stopped.

"You're in shock," he said.

"I am lucid."

"Then go back to bed. We will discuss this when you're calmer."

The old command hidden inside the sentence almost made me smile.

"I am leaving."

David swore. "Not tonight."

"Print the discharge form."

"Your hemoglobin is dangerous."

"Then give me the risks in writing."

Cole stepped closer to the desk. "Do not print anything."

David looked between us.

"She is my patient."

"She is my mate."

"Not my medical decision-maker while she is conscious."

David printed the form.

I signed against medical advice, then signed a second document revoking Cole's access to my medical records.

He grabbed the top sheet.

"This is insane."

"No. This is the first decision about my body tonight that belongs entirely to me."

Finn appeared at the end of the corridor.

He rubbed his eyes and looked at the papers.

"Are we going home?"

I stared at him.

"You and your father are."

"What about you?"

"I am going somewhere else."

His face twisted. "Because Aunt Emma got hurt?"

"Because I did."

He looked confused.

Cole folded the discharge form in half.

"Enough. You are not taking Finn anywhere while you are unstable."

"I did not ask to take him."

That shocked both of them.

David stepped between us long enough to hand me a sealed discharge packet. The front page listed my surgical restrictions in plain language: no shifting, no heavy lifting, no Alpha stabilization without written consent, and immediate emergency care for renewed bleeding. I tucked it beneath my arm.

Cole noticed the red warning box.

"What does Alpha stabilization mean?" he asked.

"It means my body is no longer yours to regulate," I said. "If a doctor needs your presence, I decide whether you enter the room."

His expression tightened, but he had no medical argument left.

I moved toward the elevator.

Cole followed.

"Lyra, if you walk out of this hospital, I will have the guards bring you back."

I pressed the call button.

"Then do it in public."

The elevator doors opened.

I stepped inside.

Before they closed, I looked at him one last time.

"You chose Emma's surgery over mine. Now you get to learn what your choice cost."

I was done begging for basic facts to matter.
