Chapter 2

The words left my mouth with the finality of a door closing.

"I, Bethany, reject you, Alpha Easton of the Nightveil Pack, as my mate."

For a second, nothing happened. The healer's wing stayed exactly as it was: Easton kneeling beside the examination table, his hand still in Milena's hair, her parents frozen mid-sob, Rhea standing with the counteragent vial halfway extended.

Then the bond tore.

It didn't break cleanly. It ripped through me like silver wire yanked from a wound—hot first, a searing line from my neck down through my chest, then cold, then nothing. The half-formed mark on my neck went from cold to hollow. Not absent. Hollow. A dead patch of skin where warmth used to gather, waiting for completion that would never come.

I pressed my thumb to my wrist. My pulse was steady.

Across the room, Easton made a sound I'd never heard from him before. Not a word. Not a growl. A raw, animal noise that came from somewhere deeper than his throat. His hand left Milena's hair. He staggered against the examination table, his other hand clutching his chest, his eyes going wide and wild.

"What—" His voice cracked. "What did you—"

His wolf collapsed inside him. I couldn't see it happen, but I knew. The way his face went blank, the way his shoulders folded inward, the way his Alpha authority—always present, always humming in the air around him—just stopped. Like someone had cut a wire.

For the first time in his life, Easton's wolf was gone.

Milena's mother gasped. Her father took a step toward Easton, then stopped, uncertain. Rhea's eyes were on me, wide and unreadable.

I turned and walked out.

No one tried to stop me. No one spoke. I moved through the doorway, down the hall, past the antiseptic smell and the mountain ash, through the pack house corridors that I'd managed for three years. My footsteps were the only sound.

The ceremonial hall was still full. Three hundred wolves, still waiting. Still seated in their formal rows. The candles were still burning. The officiant stood at the altar, his mouth slightly open, his hands clasped in front of him like he was holding a script he didn't know how to finish.

I walked down the center aisle. My white ceremonial gown rustled against the floor. Every head turned. No one spoke. No one moved.

I reached the main doors and pushed them open.

The night air hit me like cold water. No coat. No phone. No keys. Just the gown and the hollow mark on my neck and the strange, watchful stillness inside my chest where something had shifted.

Behind me, through the open doors, I heard Easton roar my name.

"BETHANY!"

Footsteps. Fast. Multiple sets. His voice again, threaded with the Alpha tone—the command that should have stopped me mid-stride, should have turned me around, should have pulled me back like a leash.

I kept walking.

The tone hit me and slid off. Not because I was strong enough to resist it. Because there was nothing left for it to grip. The bond was gone. The hollow mark on my neck was just scar tissue now. He had no claim.

I walked faster.

The forest border was half a mile ahead. I could see the tree line, dark against the darker sky. Silvercrest territory lay just beyond it. I had no plan. No destination. Just the cold hollow space and the certainty that staying would kill something in me that hadn't died yet.

"Bethany, stop!" Easton's voice was closer now. Ragged. No Alpha tone this time. Just desperation.

I didn't stop.

Inside my chest, in the deep quiet where my wolf had been silent for as long as I could remember, I felt something move. Not a voice. Not yet. Just a presence, waking up, paying attention.

And then, barely a breath, so faint I almost missed it:

*Beth.*

My wolf. Speaking my name.

I stopped walking. Not because of Easton. Because of that single syllable. That impossible, undeniable proof that I wasn't empty. Wasn't broken. Just dormant.

Behind me, Easton's footsteps slowed. I heard him breathing hard, heard the scrape of gravel under his boots as he came to a halt maybe ten feet back.

"Please," he said. His voice was raw. "Please, just—just wait. We can fix this. We can—"

I turned around.

He looked shattered. His shirt was half-untucked. His hair was a mess. His eyes were red-rimmed and wild, and for the first time since I'd known him, he looked small. Not physically. But small in the way that people look when the thing that made them certain has been taken away.

"There's nothing to fix," I said quietly.

His mouth opened. Closed. Opened again. "The bond—"

"Is gone."

"We can—there are rituals. The Moon Goddess—"

"No."

The word sat between us like a stone.

He took a step forward. I didn't move. He stopped.

"I didn't mean—" His voice broke. "I was trying to save her. She was dying, Bethany. She was—"

"I know," I said.

He blinked. "Then why—"

"Because you didn't even look at me."

Silence.

"Three years," I said. My voice was still quiet. Still flat. "Three years, and you never once chose me first. Not once. And tonight, in front of three hundred wolves, you proved it."

"That's not fair," he said, but his voice had no strength behind it.

"You're right," I said. "It's not."

I turned and kept walking. This time, he didn't follow.

The forest swallowed me whole. No moon. No stars. Just trees and darkness and the sound of my own breathing. The ceremonial gown snagged on branches. I kept moving.

Silvercrest's border was ahead. I could feel it—not with my wolf, because she still wasn't fully awake, but with something older. Instinct. The knowledge that crossing a territory line without permission was dangerous, maybe fatal, but staying was worse.

I reached the tree line and stopped.

Across the invisible boundary, I could see lights. Distant. A patrol, maybe. Or a border station.

Inside my chest, that presence stirred again. Stronger this time. Not speaking. Just there. Watching. Waiting.

I pressed my thumb to my wrist one more time. My pulse was steady.

I stepped across the border.

The air changed immediately. Colder. Sharper. The scent of pine and something else—something clean and wild that I couldn't name.

Behind me, Nightveil territory faded into the dark. Ahead, Silvercrest waited.

I kept walking.
