Chapter 2

The howl tore through the stormy night, a sound of such raw, jagged desperation that it chilled my blood even before the mind-link opened. It wasn’t a warning of attack. It was a cry of discovery.

"Found! We found her! At the northern border!"

My heart hammered against my ribs. I was already running, mud slicking the soles of my combat boots as I sprinted from the training grounds toward the Pack House. The rain in Seattle never really stopped, but tonight it felt like the sky was weeping with us. Or for us.

By the time I reached the medical wing, a crowd had already gathered. Warriors, elders, and my parents were clustered around a stretcher being unloaded from a patrol jeep. The scent hit me first—copper blood, damp earth, and the sour reek of old wounds. But beneath that, my wolf, Nova, bristled. Her hackles rose, a low growl vibrating in my chest.

*Wrong,* Nova hissed. *Something is wrong.*

I pushed through the crowd. "Let me through!"

And then I saw her.

Iris.

She looked like a broken doll. Her once-pristine skin was mapped with jagged, ugly scars. Her left leg was twisted at an unnatural angle, and she was sobbing, her hands clutching at the blanket as if it were a lifeline.

"Mom? Dad?" her voice cracked, thin and terrified. "They… they broke me. My wolf… she’s gone. They killed her inside me."

"Oh, my baby!" My mother, Mrs. Bennett, let out a wail that shattered the room. She threw herself over Iris, sobbing hysterically. My father stood beside them, tears streaming down his weathered face, looking at Iris as if she were a resurrection miracle.

Cole was there, too. My mate. The Alpha.

He stood frozen, his face pale. I watched the guilt that had eaten him alive for three years suddenly shift into something else—hope. Desperate, blinding hope. He reached out, his hand trembling, to touch Iris's shoulder.

"You're safe now," Cole whispered, his voice thick with emotion I hadn't heard directed at me in years. "I swear, Iris, you are safe."

The pack erupted in murmurs of relief and joy. A miracle. The lost daughter returned.

But I couldn't move. I couldn't join the celebration. Because I could smell it.

I stepped closer, inhaling deeply, letting my senses dissect the layers of scent clinging to my sister. Yes, there was blood. Yes, there was the stale odor of a dungeon. But woven through it all was a scent that didn't belong on a captive.

*Pine and sulfur.* Rogue male. Not the scent of an enemy who had tortured her, but the lingering, settled scent of… intimacy. Closeness. It smelled like an alliance, not a prison.

"Stop," I said. My voice was low, but in the sudden hush of the medical bay, it carried like a gunshot.

My parents looked up, eyes red and furious. Cole straightened, his expression hardening instantly as he looked at me.

"Chloe," my father growled. "Not now."

"No, look at her," I insisted, pointing a shaking finger at the sister who had supposedly been dead. Iris flinched, burying her face in our mother's chest. "The scent, Cole. Use your nose. She doesn't just smell like a victim. That Rogue scent… it’s stale, but it’s deep. It’s on her clothes, in her hair. That’s not the scent of a prisoner held in a cell. That’s the scent of someone living among them."

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Iris let out a high, keening wail. "He… he made me…" she sobbed, looking at Cole with wide, terrified eyes. "Chloe, please, don't… I suffered so much…"

"She’s lying!" I shouted, the warrior in me taking over. "Nova senses it! There is deceit on her, Cole! We need to interrogate her, not coddle her!"

*Smack!*

The force of the slap snapped my head to the side. My cheek burned, but the shock was colder. I looked back to see my mother standing over me, her hand raised, her face twisted in pure, unadulterated hatred.

"You monster," she hissed, spitting the words at me. "Your sister comes back from the dead, broken and tortured, and you accuse her? Because you're jealous? Because you're afraid she'll take your place?"

"Mom, no, I—"

"Enough!"

The command didn't come from my father. It came from Cole.

The air in the room grew heavy, crushing, as he released his Alpha aura. It slammed into me like a physical weight, forcing the air from my lungs. My knees buckled, instinct screaming at me to submit to my Alpha, to my mate.

Cole stepped between me and my family. He didn't look like my mate then. He looked like a stranger carved from ice. His eyes, usually the color of warm amber, were dark with fury.

"You will speak no more of this," Cole used his Alpha Tone, the voice vibrating with a power that made my bones ache. It wasn't a request; it was a magical compulsion. "Your jealousy has poisoned your mind, Chloe. Look at her. She is broken. And you… you are cruel."

"Cole, please," I gasped, fighting the pressure crushing my chest. "I am your mate. Trust me…"

"My mate would have compassion!" he roared, the sound shaking the glass cabinets. "Get out. Get out of my sight before I strip you of your rank entirely."

I looked at him, searching for even a flicker of the man who had once promised to love me. There was nothing. Just disgust.

Behind him, peering over our mother's shoulder, Iris watched me. The tears were still streaming down her face, but for a split second, her lips curled. A tiny, triumphant smirk that vanished as quickly as it appeared.

I staggered back, clutching my chest where the bond lay withering.

As I retreated into the hallway, humiliated and gasping for air, I saw Beta Marcus Stone leaning against the wall. He was typing on his phone, a dark smile playing on his lips as he watched my disgrace.

"Poor Chloe," he murmured as I passed, his voice oily and low. "The grief finally snapped her mind. Unstable. Dangerous. That's what the pack will hear by morning."

I burst out into the rain, the cold water mixing with the hot tears on my face. Inside, Nova howled in agony, mourning the mate who was still alive, but lost to us forever.
