My Mate Announced His Mistress's Pregnancy at Our Bonding

At exactly 10:14 on a Tuesday morning, my sacred connection shattered. Standing thirty feet from the stage, I watched my fated mate, Alpha Jonas, deliver a devastating blow to our ten-year bond. His steady voice echoed through the banquet hall, announcing that Coraline Young was carrying his pup and would replace me as Ironveil’s Luna. Left standing among the Delta wolves I had trained, the cold reality of his betrayal settled in.

Chapter 5

The Silvercrest library was quieter than any room I had ever been in.

It was past midnight. The fire in the hearth had burned down to embers. I had three books open on the long table in front of me — old Lycan Council records, tribunal procedure, a leather-bound copy of the Interpack Duress-Coercion statutes — and a small notebook where I was writing in the same tight, economical hand I had used for a decade to draft Ironveil's alliance treaties.

My wrists ached under the bandages. I ignored it.

The silver scar on my neck had stopped feeling like frozen metal and started feeling like nothing at all. That was worse. I preferred the cold. The cold meant something was still there to hurt.

I turned the page.

The door opened.

I didn't flinch this time. My body was beginning to learn the sounds of this house — Maren's brisk step, Caelan's deliberate one, the soft click of Cooper's nails on the hardwood. This step was new. Confident. Female.

Sable Ashford crossed the library without asking permission and sat down in the chair across from mine.

She didn't speak. She watched me read.

I let her. I had spent ten years being watched in silence by people who wanted something from me. I could out-wait a Silvercrest Gamma-in-training.

After a long minute, she leaned forward and looked at the open pages.

"You're already building a case," she said.

It wasn't a question.

I set my pen down. The dry thing I had felt stirring under my ribs for days finally surfaced — a small, tired amusement I hadn't heard from myself in longer than I could remember.

"I've been writing legal documents for a decade," I said. "The parchment Coraline forced me to sign is inadmissible under duress-coercion statute four. The shackles carry her scent — Lycan-grade detection will read the contact residue for weeks. I just need to confirm which Lycan Council jurisdiction the outpost falls under."

Sable's mouth pulled at the corner. Not quite a smile.

"Silvercrest," she said. "The outpost was three hundred meters inside the Ironveil-Silvercrest boundary line. Ironveil never surveyed the eastern ridge properly. Caelan did."

Of course he had.

I wrote that down.

Sable was quiet for a moment. Then: "I witnessed the shackles when Caelan brought you in. The silver had grown to your wrists. Maren had to cut it out of the bone. I can testify."

I looked up.

She met my eyes directly. There was no pity in her face. That was what made me trust her — the absence of the soft, careful expression I had seen on Maren and on the two Silvercrest wolves who cleaned my room. Sable was looking at me the way one strategist looks at another.

"Thank you," I said.

"Don't thank me yet." She reached into her jacket and pulled out a folded page. "I came to find you because a scout report came in an hour ago. From the Ironveil border."

My stomach tightened. I didn't let it show.

She placed the paper on the table between us and slid it toward me.

I read it.

Jonas had gone back to the outpost. Alone. Three days after the fire. He had sat in the ash for four hours, and when he finally stood, he was holding something the scout couldn't identify from that distance — small, dark, hanging from a broken chain.

My hand moved to my collarbone before my mind caught up. The mating pendant. The one I had worn every day for ten years. The one he had stopped noticing because he had stopped noticing me.

Sable was still speaking.

"His wolf started howling through the Ironveil mind-link that night. It didn't stop. Three days, unbroken. Every pack member heard it. None of them could silence it or comfort it."

I made myself breathe.

"It stopped this morning," Sable said. "Our healers know what that sound means. So do the older Ironveil wolves, if they're honest with themselves."

"Dormancy," I said.

"First stage."

I pressed my thumb against the inside of my opposite wrist. The old habit. I didn't stop it this time. I just noticed it, and let it happen, and kept reading.

The report ended with a second entry, timestamped forty minutes ago.

Jonas had confronted Coraline in the Alpha's study at Ironveil Manor. The scout couldn't hear the exchange, but she had watched Coraline leave the room afterward with her makeup smeared and her hands shaking. Coraline had not returned to the Luna suite. She had gone directly to the eastern wing and locked herself in.

Something had broken open at Ironveil tonight. I could feel it — not through the bond, because there was no bond left, but through the vast, ringing silence where the bond had been.

I looked up at Sable.

"He knows," I said.

Sable nodded once. "About the fabricated pregnancy. The wolfsbane. The fire. All of it. Our investigator inside Ironveil confirms he has the full report on his desk."

I didn't feel triumphant. I didn't feel anything I could name.

Then Sable's phone buzzed against the table.

She glanced at the screen. Her expression didn't change, but I watched her shoulders go still in the specific way a warrior's shoulders go still when new information rearranges the field.

She read it twice.

Then she looked up at me.

"Lyla," she said, and her voice had dropped into that flat, operational register I recognized because I had used it myself in every hard negotiation I had ever written. "The scout just updated. Jonas is standing alone in the north corridor of Ironveil Manor. He hasn't moved in twenty minutes. Our tracker on-site is picking up a scent trace in the air around him."

She set the phone down.

"Honeysuckle and rain."

My hand closed around the pen.
