Chapter 5

I made it to the car before I broke.

My hands found the wheel, but I couldn't turn the key. My chest was doing something strange, a kind of caving in, like a building giving way floor by floor. I put my forehead against the steering wheel and I cried. Not the quiet crying I'd been doing for weeks, the polite kind that fit inside a tissue. This was loud. Ugly. My whole body shook with it.

I cried for Brooke, who never got to see her name in that nomination. I cried for the version of me that walked into that penthouse a year ago and fell for a man who brought me soup when I had the flu. I cried because some small, stupid part of me had still been hoping, right up until his thumb touched that watch, that I was wrong about all of it.

I don't know how long I sat there. Long enough that a man walking his dog stopped and asked if I was okay through the window. I nodded. I wasn't. But I didn't need him to know that.

When I finally lifted my head, my face felt raw and tight, like something had been peeled off it. I looked at myself in the rearview mirror. Red eyes. Blotchy skin. I looked exactly like what I was — a woman who had just watched the last thing holding her up get taken away.

So I found something else to hold onto.

I wiped my face with the back of my hand, started the engine, and called Wren before I even pulled out of the parking spot.

She answered on the first ring, like always. "Hey. You okay?"

"No." I pulled onto the street. My voice came out steadier than I expected. "But that's not why I'm calling."

"Okay."

"I'm done waiting," I said. "I'm done being careful with him. Done giving him the benefit of the doubt because I don't want to believe it. I believe it, Wren. All of it." I stopped at a red light and watched a woman cross the street with a stroller, completely unaware that anyone's world had just ended a block away. "What do we still need?"

There was a pause. Not the recalculating kind. The kind where someone's been waiting for you to catch up.

"I need someone on the inside," Wren said. "I've got the donation filing. I've got the timeline. What I don't have is anyone at the university willing to say, on record, that the two were connected. Without that, it's a lot of suspicious coincidences that Leonel's lawyers will pick apart in a week."

"So find someone."

"I'm trying. There's a woman in the provost's office. Junior staffer. Priya Anand. She processed some of the paperwork around the review's closure and she's been squirrelly about it ever since — wouldn't confirm anything on the phone, wouldn't email me back. But she hasn't told me to stop calling either."

"Then keep calling."

"Naomi." Wren's voice softened, just slightly. "This is going to take time. Real time. Not days. Maybe weeks."

"I have weeks," I said. "What I don't have is any more time pretending I don't know what he did."

—

I found out later, in pieces, how it actually went with Priya.

Wren didn't tell me at the time — she said she didn't want to give me false hope on something that might fall through. She called Priya four more times over the next week. Left messages that got shorter and shorter, more careful, because Wren said you could hear the fear in how fast Priya hung up. Fear of losing a job. Fear of being the name attached to bringing down a university's biggest donor.

So Wren drove out to see her instead. Waited outside the administration building at the end of a shift, in the parking garage, because Priya wouldn't agree to meet anywhere that felt official.

She brought a folder. Not for Brooke. For Priya.

Three names. Three staff members who'd raised concerns, quietly, through proper channels, about the sudden closure of Brooke's case — and who had all been transferred to smaller departments or quietly written up within two months. Nothing that looked like retaliation on paper. Everything that looked like retaliation if you knew where to stand and look.

"This is what happens if you stay quiet and hope it works out on its own," Wren told her, standing in that gray parking garage with the folder held out like an offering. "You get moved somewhere smaller. You get told it's just restructuring. And in five years you're still there, still small, still telling yourself you did the right thing by staying safe."

Priya didn't say anything for a long time. Wren said she just stood there holding the folder, reading the same three names over and over.

Then she said, "Give me a few days."

It took six. But on the seventh day, Wren called me at eleven at night, her voice tight with something that wasn't quite triumph and wasn't quite grief either.

"She sent it," Wren said. "Emails. Between the university's legal counsel and Leonel's people. It's all there, Naomi. In writing. They're not careful about it at all — they talk about the donation and the case closure in the same sentence, like it's just business."

I sat down slowly on the edge of my bed.

"Read it to me," I said.

So she did. And somewhere in the middle of it, I stopped shaking. Something colder and steadier took its place.
