Chapter 4

The manila folder hit the conference table with a soft thud. Marcus stood across from me, his expression professionally neutral, but there was something in his eyes—a flicker of the satisfaction that comes from a job done perfectly. Two weeks of work, laid out in chronological order. I stared at the first hotel receipt. The Langham Midtown. Room 842. A Thursday, eighteen months ago. The same room number appeared on seventeen more receipts, spread out across the table like a timeline of betrayal.

Julien moved around the table, laying out the next layer of evidence with the precision of someone handling fine art. 'Text messages,' he said quietly. 'We pulled these through the carrier subpoena. They were careful—deleted most of them. But not all of them.' My hands remained flat on the table. I didn't reach for the phone records. I didn't need to read the words. I could see them anyway, in the careful way Julien's jaw tightened as he placed each page.

The security footage came last. Still images, printed on glossy paper. Marcus had timestamped each one in the corner, clinical and exact. The first showed Cody and Adelina in the Langham lobby, his hand on the small of her back as they walked toward the elevators. Another captured them in the parking garage, her arms wrapped around his neck. The last showed them leaving together, her lipstick smeared, his tie askew. I set that one face-down on the table.

'What do we do with this?' I asked.

Julien's eyes met mine across the evidence of my marriage's destruction. 'Everything,' he said. Just that. No explanation. No apology. No hesitation.

I nodded once and stood up. 'I need to go home now.'

---

Cody was in the kitchen when I got back, chopping vegetables for dinner. The knife moved slowly, methodically, the way it always did when he was thinking about something else. He looked up when I came in, and for a second, I saw him register the new coat, the hair, the way I carried myself. His eyes narrowed slightly, then relaxed into something that looked like relief.

'Hey,' he said. 'There's some wine open. Want a glass?'

I said no, but I sat at the counter anyway, watching him cook. He'd started making dinner more often in the last two weeks. A peace offering, maybe. Or maybe just the casual confidence of a man who believed his wife had finally accepted her place.

The next morning, he brought Adelina to Sunday brunch. She walked into my kitchen like she owned it, wearing a red dress that hugged her curves and a smile that never quite reached her eyes. She made mimosas in my crystal flutes—the ones we'd gotten for our wedding—and laughed at something Joshua said, her hand resting on his shoulder. Brooklyn showed her a drawing, and Adelina oohed and aahed over it with the kind of enthusiasm that children can always see through but never quite know how to call out.

I watched it all from the doorway. I didn't flinch. I didn't look away. I was cataloguing, the way Marcus had catalogued the evidence. Every gesture, every lie, every moment of the performance they were putting on. It required patience. It required stillness. It required the kind of focus I'd forgotten I was capable of.

That night, after Cody left for another 'late meeting,' I went to the back of my closet. The camera bag was there, pushed behind winter coats and old shoes. I unzipped it slowly. The Nikon felt heavier than I remembered, solid and real in my hands. I charged the battery, checked the lens, and walked out into the city.

The Manhattan Bridge was empty at dawn. I found an angle that captured the geometry of it—the cables, the lights, the way the sun caught the metal. I shot the fire escapes on the buildings opposite, the intricate patterns they made against the winter sky. I crouched low to frame the subway grate, the way the cold light fractured through it onto the sidewalk. My fingers remembered what to do. My eye remembered what to look for.

Julien was waiting at the coffee shop the next evening. I slid the prints across the table, almost shyly. He looked at them for a long time, his coffee growing cold beside him. Finally, he looked up.

'These are extraordinary,' he said. 'You always saw the world differently than anyone else.'

I felt something shift in my chest. Not quite warmth. Not quite pride. Something older than both of those things. For the first time in fifteen years, someone had looked at something I made and seen *me* in it.
