Chapter 1

During dinner, Daniel's phone on the table kept ringing non-stop.

He didn't pick up the phone to check the messages, but in his distraction, he dropped his utensils while reaching for the food.

The furrow between his brows betrayed his absent-mindedness.

My mother-in-law, feeling sorry for him, put a few pieces of ribs on his plate. "Poor thing, even when he's home, he’s busy with work. He's so exhausted he's lost weight. Some people only care about eating and don't care about their husband’s wellbeing."

"Exactly! A stay-at-home wife living off my brother, who has no sense of her place!" My sister-in-law chimed in, adding fuel to the fire.

Over the years, I had grown used to their sharp-tongued sarcasm.

Silent endurance was the best response.

They would hurl some insults, but seeing that I remained unmoved, they would lose interest.

If I dared to show even a hint of dissatisfaction, it would only provoke them, resulting in a half-hour tirade without a pause.

Ignoring their snarky remarks, I continued eating my meal as usual.

However, Daniel, like a fire ignited, suddenly slammed the table and shouted at Daisy, "If you don't want to eat, get out!"

It was the first time her own brother had yelled at her. Daisy, the pampered princess, threw her utensils onto the table. "Fine! I won't eat!"

As she stormed off, she couldn't help but shout, "All I did was say a couple of things about your wife, and you’re protecting her now?!"

I couldn't help but grip my utensils a little tighter.

Only I knew that Daniel yelled at his sister not to defend me but simply because he was in a foul mood and wanted to vent.

Daisy was just unlucky enough to be in the firing line.

Her bad luck had everything to do with his constantly buzzing phone.

The messages on his phone had nothing to do with business concerns, as my mother-in-law thought.

It was because Freya had returned to the country.

Freya, Daniel's childhood friend, had been infatuated with him from high school through college, pursuing him for five years.

When we got married, she was heartbroken and left the country.

Two days ago, in a group chat with his childhood friends, which had been quiet for three years, Freya suddenly sent a message.

"Landing at 11 p.m. tomorrow, any chance for a pickup?"

The group exploded with activity.

"No way, am I seeing things?"

"I can confirm, Freya just popped up."

"Oh God, is this some kind of drama? She's back! Is she here to reclaim what's hers?"

"My sister is back, of course, I'll pick her up." This was Ryan, who had always had an issue with me, believing I drove away their childhood friend.

"I’m going too. Even if it's 3 a.m., I’ll be there!" someone else chimed in.

Others, eager to stir up trouble, mentioned Daniel, asking if he was going.

Their heated discussion unfolded as I watched everything unfold from behind the scenes.
