Chapter 6

Jaxton noticed me but immediately shielded the woman behind him. "Is something wrong? Vivian, why don't you head home? I'll join you later."

Once he had seen Vivian Collins off with apparent concern, Jaxton turned to me, his voice urgent. "Louisa, I heard from Mom that you want a divorce. Don't be ridiculous! I promised you that once the baby is born, I'll give her money to go abroad, and the child will only recognize you as the mother. What's the issue?"

I could hardly believe this was the man I had loved for so many years. At this moment, I realized he had decayed completely, from the inside out—not suddenly, but gradually under the influence of wealth and power.

Perhaps Jaxton had always been like this, but now he was no longer willing to pretend otherwise.

I looked up at his eyes, which were still as striking as ever but no longer clear. They no longer held only me; now, they were filled with things I couldn't understand.

I smiled, feeling a sense of relief as the last bit of my lingering affection faded away.

"Do you think you're some kind of emperor with multiple wives, grooming an illegitimate child to inherit your throne? Do you realize how arrogant you sound? To me now, you're nothing but trash, and trash should be thrown away."

Jaxton was stunned by my harsh words, staring at me in shock.

"Louisa, I..."

"Shut your mouth. Be at the courthouse by noon tomorrow. If you don't show up, don't blame me if something happens to Vivian and your precious son."

I walked away without a second glance. Jaxton didn't follow. Years of flattery and sycophancy had molded him into someone who believed he was above all others, and my repeated "self-righteousness" had deeply wounded his pride.

He was convinced I was madly in love with him and that this was all just a result of temporary anger.

But he was mistaken. I would never look back.

The next day at noon, Jaxton arrived precisely at the courthouse.

He looked at me coldly and said, "Louisa, I'll say this one last time—cut it out. My patience has limits."

"Figures a man with a cuckolded reputation would have strong patience," I retorted.

Jaxton didn't seem to understand my words. He just coldly dropped a parting line. "Don't regret this."

I scoffed at his ashen face and said, "Vivian's eight months along, right? She's about to give birth soon. Once she does, I'll make sure to send you a 'special gift' that you'll definitely find satisfying!"

Ignoring the storm brewing on Jaxton's face, I turned on my heel and walked away.
