Chapter 5

The email came through Nathan Cole's office at nine-fifteen on a Tuesday morning. I was drinking coffee I could not taste when my phone buzzed with his forwarded message.

*Australian skilled worker visa: APPROVED. Reference number 847-MEB-2024. Correspondence to follow.*

I read it three times. Then I set the phone face-down on the counter. I finished my coffee. I rinsed the cup. I put it in the dishwasher.

Damon was already at the office. He had left at seven with a travel mug and a kiss on my forehead. He told me he loved me. I told him to have a good day.

I waited until nine-thirty. Then I opened my laptop.

The Qantas website loaded in four seconds. I had already searched the route a dozen times on the library computer. I knew the flight numbers. The departure times. The gate assignments.

QF12. JFK to LAX to Melbourne. Departs 9:45 PM. Arrives two calendar days later because you cross the date line and lose a whole day to the Pacific.

I clicked through to booking. I entered my passport information. Maiden name. The passport I had renewed three months ago at a post office in Brooklyn while Damon thought I was at a dentist appointment.

One-way ticket. Economy. Aisle seat.

The price was two thousand one hundred and forty-seven dollars. I paid with the Melbourne account. The confirmation came through in ninety seconds.

*Booking reference: XJKP49. E-ticket attached.*

I printed it at the FedEx on Amsterdam Avenue. I paid cash. I folded it into quarters and put it in my coat pocket.

Next was the university. The University of Melbourne graduate architecture program. I had already been accepted. The offer letter had come six weeks ago, forwarded to Nathan's office, printed and locked in his safe beside the postnuptial agreement.

I logged into the student portal. I uploaded my Columbia transcripts. I selected my courses. Sustainable Design Studio. Conservation Architecture. Urban Theory.

Tuition was due within seventy-two hours of enrollment. Eighteen thousand Australian dollars. I paid it in full. The receipt downloaded automatically.

Then the apartment. I had found it on a website for international students. Fitzroy. One bedroom. Furnished. Seven hundred a week. The landlord's name was Margaret Chen. She had replied to my inquiry within an hour.

*When can you move in?*

*This Saturday,* I had written back.

*Perfect. First month plus bond due on arrival. Bank transfer acceptable.*

I sent the transfer that morning. Four thousand Australian dollars. The receipt came through at ten-fifteen.

By eleven o'clock, I had a flight, a university enrollment, and an address on the other side of the world.

I deleted my browser history. I cleared the cache. I shut the laptop.

I made myself a sandwich I did not eat.

That night, Damon came home late. He smelled like wine and expensive cologne. He was smiling.

"Big news," he said. He loosened his tie. He poured himself a scotch. "I'm throwing a birthday party for Alivia. Saturday night. Rooftop lounge in Tribeca. The whole board's coming. Investors. Everyone."

I looked up from the book I was not reading. "That sounds nice."

"It's going to be incredible. She deserves it after everything she's been through." He took a sip. He looked at me. "You're okay with this, right?"

"Of course," I said. "It's her birthday."

He smiled. Relieved. He sat beside me on the couch. He put his hand on my knee.

"You've been so understanding through all of this. I know it hasn't been easy."

"It's fine," I said.

He kissed my temple. He finished his scotch. He went to take a shower.

I waited until I heard the water running. Then I picked up my phone. I texted Nathan Cole.

*Saturday night. Tribeca rooftop lounge. Confirm courier delivery for 8 PM.*

He replied in thirty seconds.

*Confirmed. Gift-wrapped box addressed to guest of honor. Envelope inside.*

I deleted the thread. I put the phone away.

I went back to my book. I turned a page. I did not read a single word.

Saturday morning arrived clean and cold. Damon left early to oversee the setup. He kissed me goodbye at the door. He told me he would see me tonight.

"Wouldn't miss it," I said.

The door closed. I listened to his footsteps fade down the hall. I counted to sixty.

Then I started packing.

I worked methodically. Clothes first. I took only what I had bought with my own money before the marriage. Jeans. Sweaters. The leather jacket my mother gave me for my thirtieth birthday. I left the dresses Damon liked. The shoes he had chosen. The jewelry he thought made me look elegant.

Documents next. My passport. My Columbia diploma. The architectural models I had built during our first year of marriage — small cardboard structures I had made at the kitchen table while he worked late. I wrapped them in newspaper. I fit them into the suitcase with care.

Photographs. Not the wedding album. Not the framed prints from our honeymoon. Just the small stack from college. Me and Rachel at graduation. Me and my parents at a job site. Me alone on the Columbia library steps, smiling at something I could no longer remember.

I packed my laptop. My sketchbooks. The drafting pencils I had not used in two years.

By noon, everything fit into one suitcase and one laptop bag.

I walked through the penthouse one last time. I looked at the furniture we had chosen together. The art on the walls. The kitchen where I had made a thousand meals.

I stopped in front of the white lilies Damon had brought home three days ago. They were still fresh. Still perfect. I adjusted the vase half an inch to the left.

Then I picked up my suitcase. I slung the laptop bag over my shoulder.

I walked out the door. I did not lock it behind me.

I took the elevator down. I walked past the doorman without speaking. I got into a cab.

"JFK," I said. "International terminal."

The driver nodded. He pulled into traffic.

I looked out the window. I watched the city slide past. The buildings. The people. The life I was leaving behind.

I reached into my coat pocket. I pulled out the e-ticket. I unfolded it. I read the confirmation code one more time.

*XJKP49.*

I folded it back up. I put it away.

I did not look back.
