Chapter 1

In my previous incarnation, my husband and I agreed to be DINKs, but he went back on his word when we reached middle age.

He punctured the condom and got me pregnant. Then, he made every attempt to beg me, making me keep the baby helplessly.

Eventually, I died on the operating table due to complications during childbirth.

As my spirit was floating in the air, I thought my husband would be filled with remorse.

Unexpectedly, what I saw was that he used the compensation for my death in childbirth he claimed on the insurance to marry a younger and more beautiful woman.

It wasn't until this moment that I realized he had been gambling from the beginning, gambling on my death at an advanced maternal age.

When I opened my eyes again, however, I was back to the moment when my husband knelt before me and begged me to keep the baby.

1

"Well, my wife is 40, and I believe I can give it a try. I bought her a life insurance policy that would pay me a million-dollar compensation for her death in childbirth. I suppose my bet on her death at an advanced maternal age should be more reliable than the lottery, right?"

This was the most-liked answer in a short video asking what to do if your wife got pregnant at an advanced age.

The person who gave this answer was my husband, Jake Hammer.

Jake and I met and fell in love in college. We got married naturally after graduation.

When we got married, we both agreed that children would be a burden to us that we didn't plan to have.

Unexpectedly, when we were 40 years old, Jake told me that he still needed a child to carry on his family line.

I was very opposed to it at first, but I didn't expect to get pregnant not long after.

That day, Jake knelt in front of me, begging me in tears not to abort the child and declaring that it was his only hope.

Looking at my beloved's face, I couldn't bear to see him sad, so I kept this child.

As time passed, my belly grew bigger and bigger.

My due date arrived as estimated, but I died on the operating table during labor dystocia, and the fetus in my womb also died from asphyxiation.

While I was floating in the air as a soul, I was waiting for Jake's remorse for insistence on having a child.

Out of all my expectations, I saw him calmly sign the notice of my death with even a malicious smile on his lips.

It wasn't until this time that I found out my unexpected pregnancy was caused by him intentionally puncturing the condom and replacing my birth control pills with vitamin tablets.

He also kept gambling on my death in childbirth as an elderly mother and on being able to get a fortune in compensation.

He naturally inherited my family's company as my husband and used the compensation to marry his young and beautiful distant cousin through the matchmaking of his mother, Barbara.

I could only watch as his life got better and better. Filled with overwhelming resentment, I shed helpless tears.

The next moment, I felt as if the world was spinning. My vision went blank as I had a splitting headache.

When I regained consciousness and opened my eyes again, I was back to the time when Jake knelt and begged me to keep the child.

2

"Honey, please, please keep this child. The child is innocent!"

Kneeling on the ground, with tears and snot streaming down his face, Jake was looking at me pitifully with sincere eyes.

When I took a closer look at the person in front of me, I was stunned in disbelief.

The excruciating pain of the contractions and vaginal tears I experienced on the operating table came into my mind, suffocating me.

At the thought of the happy life Jake lived after killing me, I slapped him recklessly with a surge of overflowing hatred and rage.

I used all my strength to slap Jake, who was caught off guard and staggered.

He touched his swollen cheek, gaping in shock at me, who looked livid.

After a long silence, I gradually regained my composure.

I turned around, saw the pregnancy test stick with two pink lines on the table, and then looked down at my belly, which had not grown any bigger.

I finally realized that I was alive again.

"Honey, don't be angry. It's all my fault. Don't hurt the baby you are pregnant with."

Jake thought that I was in a bad mood because of the knowledge of my pregnancy, so he kept kneeling before me.

Looking at his extremely disgusting face, I couldn't help but laugh coldly in my heart.

It must be because God couldn't bear to see me die such a tragic death that I was given a chance to start over.

This time, I must tear him into pieces.

"Honey, please, this child will be the only descendant in our Hammer family. As you know, my mother has been urging us to have a child in every attempt and even threatened to commit suicide lately. I can't stand it anymore. If you can keep the child, I'm willing to slave for you!"

Seeing that I hadn't replied for a long time, Jake slowly crawled toward me on his knees, wiping his snot and tears with his sleeves and trying to hold my hand.

I shook off his hand in disgust and dragged my chair back to keep a distance from him.

"Catherine, I'm begging you, please leave our Hammer family a descendant!" My mother-in-law, Barbara, suddenly came out of the room and chimed in, looking at me with tears in her eyes.

"Alright. I agree."

Before Barbara and Jake could continue their pitiful act, they were interrupted by my agreement.

"Honey, is it true?" Jake asked with a little doubt as if wondering why I suddenly agreed after such a determined refusal.

"Of course it's true. To be honest, I've had enough of living without a child these years. I believe this child is a gift from God. I'll keep it."

With that, I stroke my belly lovingly, showing that I cherished this child very much.

Jake and Barbara looked at each other with their eyes full of joy.

As I gazed at them, I laughed at my previous naivety for not being able to see through these two people's conspiracy.

"Very good, Catherine. It's good that you've made such a wise choice. I'll cook you some nourishing food right away!" Barbara said with an excited grin, holding my hand.

I smiled and held her hand back. The whole family was filled with an atmosphere of superficial harmony.

The next day, I went to have an abortion at the hospital without hesitation.

Before I went out, my husband stopped me.

"Stop going to work in the company during this period. Take good care of yourself and get enough rest," Jake said in a tender tone and hugged my waist intimately.

"Okay, I got it. I'm going back to see my dad today and tell him the news of my pregnancy." I pushed his hand away naturally and talked to him face-to-face.

"Do you need me to go with you?"

"No. Just go back to the company and handle your work." After refusing Jake's help, I quickly walked out the door without looking back at him.

On my way to the hospital, I kept thinking that the reason why Jake could directly inherit my family's company after my death must be that during the period when I was pregnant and not in the company, he had been trying to win over the hearts of the board members behind my back.

I couldn't help but feel a chill through my heart. It turned out that he had been coveting my property for so long.

I immediately called my right-hand secretary and told him to help me keep a close watch on Jake's every move in the company.

My secretary agreed and tactfully did not ask why.

As I walked into the hospital, the familiar strong smell of disinfectant and cold air made me shiver.

I sat in the waiting room nervously, holding the appointment form tightly in my hand, with mixed feelings in my heart.

The abortion went well. I was relieved of a huge burden, but I also became weak.

I put the medicine for abortion recovery into the bottle of medicine that helped nourish a fetus before I went home.

As soon as I arrived home, I smelled the rich aroma of nourishing food and saw Barbara busy in the kitchen.

At the sight of me, Jake helped me in with a smile on his face. He naturally took the bag from my hand and looked at what was inside.

"Honey, did you go to the hospital by yourself?"

"Yes, I asked the doctor to prescribe me some medicine good for the baby," I replied and sat on the sofa in the living room.

Hearing what I said, Jake's smile on his face remained. He sat next to me and started to massage my arm in a fawning manner.

"Thank you for your sacrifices during pregnancy, honey. I have something to talk to you today..."

I held back the urge to push him away and asked, "What's the matter?"

"Can you lend me some money? I need to invest in a business recently. As you know, my money is all in the bank, so I can't take it out. I can only ask you..."

My eyebrow twitched. I didn't believe his words at all. Even if his money was in the bank, it was impossible that he couldn't withdraw any money for investment.

I suddenly remembered that this juncture in time in my previous life was when Jake bought the life insurance on me.

My heart turned cold. I didn't expose him to his face, nor did I intend to lend him money.

"Dear, it's not that I don't want to give money to you. It's just that our company has been in a little crisis recently, as you know. Those board members have begun to disobey me, so I really can't come up with the money."

I spread my hands to him, indicating that I couldn't help him.

Jake's face changed drastically. His mouth twitched, but he couldn't utter a word. Right at this moment, the doorbell rang and interrupted us.

When Barbara heard the doorbell, she hurried out of the kitchen to open the door. Then, she led a young and beautiful girl with a suitcase in with a smile on her face.

I felt my heart skipped a beat. This was the girl my husband married after I died in my previous incarnation. She was also Jake's distant cousin who had no blood relationship with him. It turned out that the two of them had already hooked up at this time.

I curled my lips into a smile as I thought, "You finally come."

Barbara warmly invited Lily Ryder to the dining table, her eyes full of unconcealed satisfaction, as if Lily was the daughter-in-law she liked.

"Jake, Catherine, I'm so sorry. This is my first time here, so I'm unfamiliar with everything here. Sorry that I have to bother you."

Lily spoke with a smile, constantly glancing at Jake, her hands picking up food for Barbara.

I smiled silently.

Lily looked at Jake's empty bowl and filled it with a portion of nourishing food for him.

"Jake, have more. You should take more care of yourself," Lily said with a sweet smile at Jake.

During this meal, they were a happy and loving family, while I looked more like an outsider.

After dinner, I let Lily stay in the second bedroom next to the master bedroom and thoughtfully asked Jake to prepare toiletries for her and take her to familiarize herself with the house.

"Catherine, thank you for being so nice to me!" Lily took my arm and expressed her gratitude to me, but I could tell a flicker of viciousness in her eyes.

That night, I told Jake that I had agreed to my father's request that I should go home and stay with him for a few days when I saw him at home today.

Jake immediately put on a reluctant look and said, "Oh, honey, when will you come back? I'll miss you and our baby."

"In two or three days. I'll be back as soon as possible," I said calmly. Then, I also asked him to sleep in a separate room from me on the pretext of not feeling well.

After Jake left, I couldn't help but heave. After looking at his extremely disgusting face for the whole day, I felt like I could even vomit up the meal I had eaten last night.

At this time, I received an email from my secretary.

He had collected and sorted out the information about Jake's private property, as well as the evidence that he had secretly misappropriated the company's funds to buy himself a private villa.

I copied all the evidence into my USB drive with a cold smile and thought, "The first step is completed."

The second step was to collect evidence of his infidelity.

The next day, I only packed a few clothes before I left. Jake and Lily said goodbye to me with a reluctant look, but I could also see their smiles that they could hardly suppress.

I was smiling, too.

That night, in the hotel, I was watching the real-time video captured by the miniature camera I installed in the master bedroom of my house with great interest.

The reason I didn't install a camera in the second bedroom where Lily lived was because I was sure they would do something outrageous in my bedroom.

As expected, the moment the door to the master bedroom opened, two figures walked in.
