Chapter 2

The building rose like a steel monolith against the night sky, all glass and sharp edges that caught the city lights and threw them back harder. The SUV pulled into an underground garage where men in dark suits materialized from the shadows, their earpieces glinting.

One of them opened my door. "Mrs. Andrews. Welcome."

The title felt like a ghost limb—still there, but belonging to someone else now.

The elevator was all mirrors and brushed metal. I watched my reflection fracture and multiply as we ascended. Forty floors. Fifty. The numbers climbed until they stopped at PH.

The doors opened onto a foyer that could swallow my old penthouse whole. Marble floors stretched toward floor-to-ceiling windows that framed Manhattan like a conquered kingdom. But it was the silence that struck me first—thick and absolute, like the air before a storm.

A woman in her fifties approached, her posture military-precise. "Miss Cole. I'm Diana. Mr. Hawkins is expecting you in his study." She paused, her eyes softening in a way that didn't match the fortress around us. "But first, you must be exhausted. I've prepared tea."

She led me to a sitting room where a porcelain service waited on a low table. The scent hit me before I saw it—jasmine and white peony, with that distinctive hint of bergamot. My breath caught.

"How did you—" I stared at the delicate cup. This wasn't something you found at any tea shop. I'd discovered it years ago in a tiny import store in the Village, a blend the owner made specially. I hadn't even told Brody about it.

Diana's smile was knowing. "Mr. Hawkins is very thorough."

The tea tasted like memory and surveillance, sweet and unsettling in equal measure.

"He's ready for you now."

I followed her down a hallway lined with abstract art that probably cost more than most people's houses. She stopped at a heavy door, knocked twice, and left me there.

I pushed it open.

The study was all shadows and leather, lit only by a desk lamp that carved the room into territories of light and dark. He stood with his back to me, silhouetted against windows that overlooked the city he supposedly ruled.

"Catherine Cole." His voice was low, controlled. "Or should I say, Catherine Andrews? Though I understand that's no longer accurate."

He turned, and my body went rigid. He was tall—taller than Brody, broader through the shoulders. The lamplight caught the sharp planes of his face, the intensity in his eyes that made me want to step back. This was the monster. This was the man who destroyed lives before lunch.

"I'm here." My voice came out steadier than my pulse. "As agreed."

"Are you afraid?" He moved closer, each step deliberate.

"Should I be?"

Something flickered across his face—amusement, maybe, or respect. He reached for a coffee cup on his desk, and that's when I saw it. The way his fingers wrapped around the ceramic, thumb pressed against the side instead of through the handle. And there, across his knuckles—a scar, pale and jagged, shaped like a lightning bolt.

The room tilted.

Fifteen years ago. Winter. I was seventeen, cutting through an alley behind my favorite bakery. A boy huddled against the brick wall, thin as a shadow, his hands wrapped around nothing. Those same hands, smaller then, holding an empty cup the same strange way.

I'd bought him soup. Bread. Given him my scarf because his lips were blue.

"You." The word fell out of me. "You're—"

He stepped into the light fully, and I saw it all. The same dark eyes, no longer hollow with hunger. The same sharp jawline, now defined by success instead of starvation. The same scar he'd gotten fighting off someone trying to steal his shoes.

"Hello, Catherine." His voice softened, losing its edge. "It's been a while."

My legs forgot how to hold me. I reached for the desk.

"You demanded Angela." The words came out fractured. "You knew—"

"I demanded a Cole woman." He set down the coffee cup with careful precision. "I knew exactly what kind of man your husband was. Knew he'd sacrifice you to save himself and keep her." His jaw tightened. "I was counting on it."

The room spun. "You wanted me here."

"I've wanted you safe for fifteen years." He moved to a bookshelf, pressed something. A panel slid open, revealing a wall of photographs. Me at charity galas. Me leaving the penthouse. Me in Central Park with Madden. Newspaper clippings. Society page mentions. A decade of surveillance disguised as devotion.

"I built all of this—" He gestured at the empire beyond the windows. "—to be worthy of the girl who saw a starving kid and didn't look away." His voice cracked, just slightly. "I'm not keeping you prisoner, Catherine. I'm asking you to stay."

I stared at the wall of my own life, catalogued and cherished by a ghost from my past.

"They think you're a monster."

"I let them." He stepped closer, close enough that I could see the boy beneath the billionaire. "It kept you safer than they ever did."

The cold thing in my chest—the sharp, crystallized rage—began to thaw. Not into forgiveness. Into something far more dangerous.

Possibility.
