Chapter 5

Less than five minutes after I left, Trevor’s relentless phone calls came in.

I rejected his calls, but he kept calling repeatedly.

Seeing that my phone had only 5% battery left, I reluctantly answered.

“Where are you?” he asked angrily.

Just as I was about to speak, Trevor added, “I told you to transfer your salary to me within one minute. Why didn’t you?”

It was late at night. As my husband, should he not be worried instead about where I was first?

He only cared about my money.

I never realized how much he loved money.

I did not waste my breath. I simply hung up.

I found a chain hotel and checked in.

As soon as I lay down, Trevor called again.

I simply tossed my phone aside until the battery ran out.

I reminisced about all the things he had said to me.

He had said that he would take me on a trip around the country.

Yet, he never planned even a single trip.

He had said that he would buy me a big villa.

Yet, he did not even want to put my name on the deed of the house we lived in.

I did not sleep well the entire night.

When I went home with dark circles under my eyes, Trevor was waiting at the door.

He raised his arm to block my way.

“Why didn’t you transfer your salary to me? You didn’t even come home last night!”

I pushed him aside and sat down on the couch weakly.

“Let’s talk.”

I saw the wedding photo in front of me. Everything felt absurd.

Other people bought wedding packages to celebrate their special day. We went to a random photo studio and took just two pictures.

Even the wedding dress was from Trevor’s sister.

Back then, I thought his family had no money. So, I saved up wherever I could.

He walked over and sat next to me. With a gloomy face, he asked, “Do you really think leaving you $150 for pocket money is too little?”

It was not just “little.” It felt destitute.

“My parents live in the countryside and don’t even spend $50 a month. $150 is three times that! What do you have to complain about?

“Besides, I’m not saving it for myself. It’s for us!

“Was it worth staying out all night just to be spiteful?”

I sneered. “I make over $10,000 a month, yet my lifestyle is worse than when I was in college. Why am I even with you?

“What makes you think I have to pinch pennies and tighten my belt right along with you?”

Trevor looked at me in confusion. His face turned grim.

“You started making more money, and now, your head’s in the clouds.”

“Get lost! Starting today, I won’t give you my salary anymore.”

Trevor shot up from his seat and kicked a small stool beside him.

He began complaining about the sacrifices he had made for us.

After starting his job, he wore pants until they faded, but he still would not buy new ones. He only wanted to save more money.

But what did any of that have to do with me?

I was not the one who told him not to buy new clothes.

We were at a standoff for a long time. Trevor paced back and forth in the living room.

“Fine. From now on, I’ll leave you an extra $300. I’ll save the rest for you.”

“I told you I’m not giving you my salary. Do you really not understand?”

Trevor stared at me for a long time. Finally, he blurted out, “Then, you can pay me rent because I bought this house.”

After that, he turned around and left for work.

He left me alone in the living room. I was completely stunned.

He had left abruptly and had forgotten his phone at home.

A glaring text on the screen knocked the wind out of me.
