Chapter 4

Megan’s POV

“That’s enough.”

The voice was low. Calm. But it cracked the air like thunder.

Heads turned as Elijah Vale stepped through the crowd, cutting across the ballroom like he owned it. His black tailored suit stood out against the glittering party scene. No champagne. No pretense. Just purpose.

I couldn’t move.

He was taller than I remembered. Sharper. Still carrying that same unnerving stillness, like he was always ten moves ahead. And now—he was looking directly at me.

Mellan’s voice came too fast. Too loud. “What the hell are you doing here?”

Elijah didn’t even glance at her.

He walked straight up to the stage and turned to the crowd.

“My name is Elijah Vale. I’m an attorney, and as of tonight, I’m representing Megan Sage.”

A hushed wave moved through the room.

Jane was the first to speak. “Excuse me? This is a private gathering.”

“You made it public the second you displayed falsified messages accusing my client of adultery,” Elijah said evenly. “You committed public defamation, intentional emotional distress, and if I’m reading this right—” He pulled out a folded copy of the projected text screenshots. “—digital fraud.”

Mellan stiffened beside Jane.

Jaxon took a step forward. “Those messages came from her phone. We had them verified.”

Elijah turned toward him slowly. “Is that so? Then maybe you can explain the fact that the screenshots are missing EXIF data, have cropped timestamps, and my personal favorite, contain font inconsistencies that didn’t exist in the messaging app until a software update from six months ago.”

The room buzzed louder. People whispered. Someone pulled out a phone and snapped a picture.

Elijah’s voice dropped, like he was addressing a jury. “That update came after the dates shown in the messages. Which means one of two things, either time travel is real, or someone got sloppy forging evidence.”

Jane opened her mouth, but nothing came out.

Elijah turned back to the crowd. “If anyone here has questions, I’ll be filing a motion for defamation and malicious intent first thing Monday. You’re all welcome to be named witnesses.”

You could feel the shift.

The smirks disappeared. The tension snapped. The glow of humiliation that had been building around me all night? Gone. Reversed.

Now they looked cornered.

I exhaled, slow and quiet. My hands had stopped shaking.

Mellan’s voice cracked as she finally snapped out of it. “You’re just doing this because of me. I mean, it’s my birthday.”

Elijah looked at her for the first time since entering the room. “You think this is about you?”

Her jaw twitched. “Don’t play that game. I know you still care.”

“I care about truth,” he said flatly. “Something you’ve always had a flexible relationship with.”

“God, Elijah—”

“You lied to me,” he said, not raising his voice, but sharpening it. “Over and over. You lied to your sister. You lied to him.” He gave Jaxon the briefest nod. “And now you’re lying to everyone here.”

Jaxon’s face darkened. “What are you implying?”

“I’m implying that this whole circus—” Elijah gestured at the screen, the mic, the uncomfortable audience, “—was never about the truth. It was about control. It was about making Megan look weak so you could justify walking away without taking a hit.”

Jane’s face turned rigid. “You have no idea what’s been going on.”

Elijah raised a brow. “Then I suggest you stop talking before I add perjury to the list.”

A few people gasped. Someone clapped, quickly silenced by a sharp look.

And suddenly, I wasn’t invisible anymore.

I wasn’t the shameful wife. The scapegoat. The background character in Mellan’s spotlight.

I was standing at the center of it all and I wasn’t alone.

Elijah turned back to me. “Megan.”

I stepped forward, chin up, steady. “Yes?”

He held out a manila folder. “This is the beginning of your defense. I’ll need your signature to file first thing Monday.”

I took it. My hand brushed his. I could feel Mellan’s glare on the side of my face like heat.

“Elijah,” Mellan said quietly. “You’re making a mistake.”

He didn’t even turn around. “No. I made a mistake three years ago. I stayed quiet.”

He leaned toward me slightly, his voice dropping so only I could hear.

“We’re going to destroy them, Megan. But you’ll have to trust me.”

I looked at him. Really looked at him. And for the first time in years, I saw a way out that didn’t involve running or hiding.

I nodded once.

“Then let’s begin.”
